This is a very simplified version of Zoom's other multi-track recorders. No elaborate multi effects section, no XLR, no sample pads or sequencing as we have seen on so many other units by Zoom and other manufacturers. Though it does have MIDI which provides a gateway to many extra possibilities. But essentially, this is digital recording shaved back a very basic form and would suit a musician who was more about playing the instruments rather than relying on technology.

This Zoom is hugely underrated and overlooked. The midi with the Zoom drum machine is a superb addition... the drum machine does not take up extra tracks, you still have your 4..... so at mixdown you have 4 tracks plus stereo drums. It’s capable of top quality recordings and totally recommended if you want to learn more about home recording. I much prefer it over DAWS... it’s hands on... the real fun starts as soon as you have your 4 tracks /drums recorded when you use the faders to balance your mix plus use on boards effects... reverbs, pan, eq and other stuff. Great recorder.

Yes I agree with all your comment there. I would like to have seen more built-in effects, but there's no doubt it's got everything you need to make a decent recording.

Still using one nowadays to record my demo ideas! Very simple and reliable thing. Never had any problems with it after 20 years of usage!

The MIDI out was huge. They don't even have that on some of their newer recorders. This was released during Zoom's heyday, in my opinion. The major problem was that they chose the wrong media storage. You could still operate this one after many, many beers.

Hi! is there! any! possible! way! to import my Recording's! without! the ZOOM-Card-Reader-Software!? i have a chance to get a fairly good deal on a ZOOM MRS-4 Recorder!... but! i ONLY! have a ChromeBook-.O.S. for my/a laptop/computer right now & whenever i try to download the ZOOM-Card-Reader-Software! & open it up to use it gives me an error message on my screen saying that this software is only compatible with windows & mac & does not function/run on a ChromeBook-.O.S. powered device like mine! but i really like the simplicity!/ease-of-use! of the ZOOM-MRS-4-Recorder! & not only that but like stated earlier in my comment/message i have an opportunity to purchase an MRS-4 at a pretty good deal! & it's really the only 4-Track Recorder that is easy enough for me to potentially use! & more importantly! the only 4-Track Recorder that's actually just! affordable enough to be in my current super low available financial budget!...& so obviously! if i can just barely afford the ZOOM-MRS-4-Recorder! i am NOT! going to be able to afford a different laptop/computer system! so it's either gotta work with the current one that i have! or nothing! at-all! so my main question/point is that!... is there ANY! possible! way! to just import the Recording's to my current laptop/computer! with a cheap USB Smart-Card-Reader?!?... it doesn't! have to be anywhere! near! perfect! i am just basically! looking to be able to! put them! on my current laptop!/computer! just to either listen-to!/play! them! or email them! to somebody! i know! to get their opinions! on how the recording came-out! & what they think of it! & just simple stuff! like that!..& really! nothing-more! & sorry to bother you! but i figured i'd ask you! because in your demo video! you seem to know! quite alot! about this particular! recorder!...to which i don't! & i really can't seem to find anykind of answers!/solutions! to my concerns!/issue! i'am having!... but anyways! i do truly hope to hear back from you! What mastering tools does it have do you have to press the mixdown button also what's the best way to burn on a cd to make an album a cd recorder?

There are several different mastering tools. They're pretty good but you have to use them with the 'less is more' approach as they can push the mix too hard. Best way to make a CD - yes I'd probably use the mixdown feature to make it a simple stereo track then take that file to a computer for CD burning. It's always a pretty onerous process. Gearfacts ok brilliant the mastering tools are they the effects where it says chorus, boast, vocal and it puts the effect on the whole track. Can I ask you can you also put echo let's say on track 2 if that was the vocal track? Thanks

I got one how do you delete a whole track say I recorded two tracks and the second track I wasn't happy with how do I just delete track 2 without re recording over it and using memory up?

I think there's a button called "Mark A/B" or something like that. You have to mark the beginning of the song ("A" point) then mark the end of the track ("B" point") then select edit/erase in the menu, choose the track you want erased and press enter. That should delete everything on that track between the two marked points (in this case, the entire track). Hope that helps. The manual can also be found by googling "Zoom MRS4 pdf". Gearfacts

Well, as long as you transfer that file to your computer digitally, you'll never lose quality. You only lose quality when you play the actual sound through a wire and re-record it on another device. So take that memory card out, transfer the file to your computer (I think you download software from Zoom's website to do this - just google it, it's easy to find) and use Windows media player to burn it to CD. It's a bit of a process, but it's reliable and doesn't affect sound quality. Gearfacts

Gearfacts that's a good idea but the big memory card in the laptop could I use audacity to load all the tracks files and then burn it from there in windows media player

I'm interested in using this as a sampler. Just to play loops. Can you change whats playing out on each track on the fly which other tracks are playing?

Gearfacts thanks for reply. so you can only load up a 4 track project at a time? I was hoping to load samples and be able to hot swap them out on each track

I guess it's possible in theory, but any kind of swapping/reloading/copying is very slow on this device and takes a lot of key strokes. Maybe you could set up marker points and jump to various timeslots within a track. Hmm but again that's fraught with delays and timing problems. Some of the higher Zoom models from this era have sample activation pads, maybe that would be better? See my Zoom MRS8 video, it'd be much more suitable I think. GF

hey, this looks great and simple to use. considering getting it but want to make sure i can connect it to my MPC 1000 sampler to just record into as i’m playing live on it. it should work, yes?

I had one of these, years ago, but it was stolen 😞. I’m not sure I’d use it now, though, if I had it - what with iOS or computer recording, etc. (and the hassle of the old memory cards would be a discouragement). The MIDI out was really nice - quite an upgrade from my Fostex XR14 cassette 4-track, at the time.

Not really, just some very basic reverbs and mix effects.

Best approach, is getting a Zoom G2 guitar effects pedal and recording through that into the MRS4. If recording vocals, you may want a loZ to hiZ transformer.

I dont know if this is a stupid question, but do you really need a card to record? I dont necessarily want to save my recordings

May sound stupid - is this a device that could be used for recording a 3 person podcast? If so, how would it be possible being only 2 inputs ?

No, it'd be two people maximum, and even then there'd be problems with the stereo panning. Not suitable for what you want. I suggest getting a 4-cannel mixer, maybe with USB support so you can feed the audio straight into your computer. Good question though, certainly not a stoopid one ;)

@@gearfacts hey! Thanks for the response! Although I didn’t necessarily follow through with what you said- I ended up scoring 2 USB condenser microphones for under $20 (trying this podcast on a ultra low budget approach) Now when recording with both mics plugged into the laptop (recording separate tracks) there is a slight lag between the two mics. Even with post syncing it clearly lags at multiple points. Anyway to fix this issue? could It be something with buffer size? Again thank you for your time and response!!!!

You can't balance all four tracks to one track, because all the tracks are being used. That is a limitation of four track recorders. However, you can record from your four track into your computer as a stereo track.

There's software you download from Zoom, and you'll need a card reader to get the data into your computer :) #gearfacts

Export direct to tape or mini disc or your PC using the master out ( phonos) This is a brilliant machine well capable of top recordings.

Cool thanks.. bought one of these 16 years ago. Went the Garage Band way, but boy, did my song writing excitement slow down ...finally the newer macs won’t reproduce the sounds of my old songs, so I’m fed up, going back to old school for a while.havent worked out how to name songs yet.
