Zoom MultiStomp + Sawtooth Wave = A Whole Synth?!

Although it lost out to the Digitech Polara in my recent reverb shoot-out, the Zoom MS-70CDR's real strength comes from the fact that it's a "multi-effect" in the true sense of the term: you can run multiple different effect algorithms at the same time.
So bearing this fact in mind, and adding to that the wide range of effects it has on offer, I got to thinking: given only the most basic input of a raw sawtooth wave, could you build the rest of a synth using just the Zoom?..

I own a Monologue and couldn't be happier with it. That said, all the Monologue contributes to this particular video is a sawtooth wave with a decay-sustain-release envelope -which many synths can give you. I would be curious to know how the same effects would sound with another synth.It may be that the warmth and quality of the Monologue's sawtooth oscillator actually makes a difference. Alternatively, a sawtooth is just a sawtooth...

@@telantas I have a CDR-70 a Monologue, a sub 37, a OP-1, a Alesis Ion, a Roland JP-08 and a Herbs and Stone - Liquid Foam. The pedal sounds great on most Saw Tooth patches, and Pad Patches. Like he said the delays in the CDR-70 are pretty great for a under $100 pedal. I wish the CDRs bit crusher, ring mod and more glitch effects were better. But it does "lush" very well.

Under the hood, MS-50g, MS-70cdr, MS-60b and the G1Xon are all the same engine. The G1Xon includes an expression pedal, drums and a looper but is otherwise the same. The patches are interchangeable. The MS-50g is setup to be the most diversified out of the box but the others can share patches without any problems.

Wow, impressive! Effects really are the spices when "cooking sounds". For the 25 years I am in this music-making-game, I pretty much disregarded effects and concentrated on the sources. This fx seasoning can really push any source into any direction. Makes sound sources way more versatile. Great video, thank you! ☺️

I paired a Boss RV6 with a Dübreq Stylophone Gen X-1 once and you'd be amazed how much that already alters the sound and making it even more massive. Especially if you turn on the sub oscillator of it and add a little bit of its own delay. Adding an effect pedal really almost always values-up an instrument and really makes you realize how essential a multi-effect device is in your little studio.

Nice concept and execution here! I recently rediscovered my Zoom MultiFX, and am enjoying it. I find its modulations are the best - chorus, phaser, vibe, etc. And the delays, yes. EQ's and boostscare good, too. OD's and amps are poor. A useful unit! My regret is it's inability to quickly turn on and off separate fx. I MIGHT invest in one of the multi-stomp versions, just to be able to do this! Thanks for the video. I play guitar, BTW.

I thought you wrote "vocals"...the problem with stomp box reverbs compared to rack reverbs is that they are all 16 or 18 bit and the rack gear is all 24 bit today. Also the A/D and D/A converters don't sound as good on cheap gear. But if the end track or gig sounds good, then these technical matters don't really matter. I use an old 16 bit zoom rack verb because I like the tone of it of it, which has a lot to do with it's converters.

odd?, i recorded a synth volca bass creation with the zoom ms 70, basic delay and reverb only and it sounded awful. a dirty, distorted sound and it wasn't my input/recording levels. i retried with my simple donner delay and the results were much better. i'm now finding something dubious about the zoom performance, a lot of the presets are over the top and i think you have to watch out when chaining a few together. whet through most of the effects and didn't like the majority. maybe my synth rates (wobble?) were just totally out of sync with the effects rates although i turned everything down to about half on the zoom. also watched with interest your zoom vs polara shoot out - very revealing! i also had a chorus on my original zoom chain which i turned off before recording because it sounded so bad to my ear. i also have a line select at the beginning of the chain so i can turn everything off quickly. i wonder if that could be the culprit for the grating sound? thanks again.

@@MFKR696 no, not really, not if you don't want to. But while you're in the business of questioning my transparency and integrity, here's the full run-down: I have never been paid directly, in cash money, by any gear manufacturer for a video (and given the size of my channel, I very much doubt I ever will). To this day, the only gear I've featured on my channel that I received gratis from a manufacturer was the Arturia Minibrute 2S and DrumBrute. I detailed that fact in the first video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_tgRjQghLVE.html and subsequently it's noted in every video description of any video that either bit of gear was featured in. My Minilogue I received from Korg as payment for a patch pack I created for them for the Monologue. You can find that patch pack here: www.korg.com/uk/news/2019/0322/ That is the sum total of all the engagements I've had with manufacturers and distributors. Also, just ask yourself the question: why would Zoom engage with a channel with 12k subs to feature a 5 year old pedal? Not everyone is out to mislead you. Not everyone is a corporate shill. The dry signal is digitised, so there's a micro latency introduced by the a/d stage, so if you are using one of the algorithms that mix in the dry sound, it'll cause comb filtering when mixed in with the original on the send.

Great presentation on this ZOOM pedal. Your videos are very comprehensive indeed! I have been busy creating new patches on my microfreak, do you think using one pedal per synth is the way to go or not? I think this pedal covers all the effects one could ever need. Cheers! 🎹🎶😎

It depends on your set up. It's the way I often end up working, but that's more because don't have a mixer in my setup right now. There is a good argument for a mixer + aux sends (although, as I noted - the Zoom isn't well suited to that role).

@@OscillatorSink Thanks for the input. I use a mixing board and this is what I have done for years. This method works fine, but wanted a second opinion, other than my own. Your right the ZOOM pedal is really inexpensive, and sounds amazing! Love your channel my friend, thanks Expanding Knowledge 🌎∆🎹🎶😎

Do you always leave the modules' I/O levels at default? I've had quite a lot of "gainstaging" problems with the MS-70CDR...
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 4 года назад
No, I'll often reduce the output if I have multiple modules to avoid digital clipping between them. But it's dependent on the patch.

As a guitarist I was surprised when I started to get involved with the synth community that the Zoom multistomp was so widely used. Most guitarists think the Zoom Algo’s are poor imitations of the originals. Sounds ok here though. I actually use a small pedalboard from my collection specifically for synths as well as my Zoia when it’s not on guitar duties.
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 4 года назад
As a guitarist as well: that community tends to be a little more snobby and precious about the integrity of "tone" (I'm incredibly prone to that when I'm in that zone myself). The Zoom ain't dethroning a Strymon under any kind of close scrutiny, but it'll definitely get the job done in a pinch and most casual listeners aren't going to get hung up on it. Sure you could spend a grand and a bit on the 3 big Strymons... Or 70 quid on the Zoom and be able to run 3 algorithms at once - and that isn't going to be 10 times worse, right?
@peterjessop1878
@peterjessop1878 4 года назад
Oscillator Sink haha! You are not wrong about how we can get hung up on “tone”. In the end it’s whatever gets the job done I guess. It’s strange I am happy to spend £500 on the right guitar pedal, but balk at paying much more than that for a synthesiser. Go figure? Anyway keep the vids coming they have helped me on my synth journey tremendously.

@@peterjessop1878 The Timeline is brilliant but I didn't really like the $450 Mobius and only allows you to use one effect too
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 4 года назад
I also think that the Mobius is the most overshadowed by other, newer and cheaper things. The Boss MD-500 and the GFI System Synaesthesia are both better bets now in my opinion.
@shckltnebay
@shckltnebay 4 года назад
@@OscillatorSink Dont get me wrong its better sounding then the MD500 not sure about the GFI, but I just didnt think I needed that much unit. That was 3 years ago, wish I could try on again but not spending $400 for one
