MS 70 CDR tips : Tip 1. Line Selector is your friend - you can punch in and out using this inside the pedal or use an A/B or true by-pass loop (also see 4a below). 1:54 Tip 2. Hold the up button to access effect categories instead of clicking forever (example pitch effect in lofi reverb) 3:25 Tip 3. All time parameters (mS, bpm) are consistent if you use the same effect more than once 3:51 Tip 3a. Spin knobs quickly makes them jump values quicker 4:25 Tip 4. Click middle knob to exit effect editing and the right to go to first page 5:40 Tip 4a. If you want to punch out the effect completely, use the true-bypass loop pedal (or A/B switch) 7:02 5. Holding left or right adds effect to the left or right of your current chain position 7:15 6. ABC mode - Click middle knob to go to memory list of patches you have set up for various songs and song parts (chorus, verse, break, etc.). Use the right knob to assign patch order, like: A-B-C...W-X-Y-Z 7:25. 7. Arrange them in set list sequence INCLUDING DRY SOUNDS with no effects to make it easier to scroll through your set list (50 memory positions). 8:00 8.Experiment with different effects, different orders, move in and out, e.g. dirt boxes before and after delays/reverbs, emulate other signal chains of your favorite artists, etc. 9:08 9. Then just do stuff the wrong way and see what happens, e.g. bit crusher after reverb. Bit crush everything (amazing) 9:24 10. Mess around with the harmonic pitch shifter, near perfect monophonically (even with digital artifacts) 10:17 10a. Put HPS after pitch delay gets kooky 11:27 11. Shoegaze patch uses MojoRoller at end of an ambient patch (2 delays into big reverb?) for delayed vibrato, then into a dirt box after the MS-70CDR 11:52 12. Try different patches you find and string them together e.g. his 5 Down patch - pitch shifts down a 5th + LofiJunky patch (compressor into vibrato) that gives you enough creative juice to build a song around it 12:52 13. Try BendChorus (Thacknin patch) starting with low settings across the board, then adjust to taste 13:51. 13a. Dynamic Flanger, MojoRoller, reverse reverb, end with dirt (Shoglazer patch) 14:33 14. Trigger Hold Delay into pitch delay into THD into analog delay (put THD everywhere = Hold5Maths patch) 15:39 15. Set things wrong for delays (Drunky patch) 16:33 16. Pitch delay, down a fifth, baritone guitar like, then into big reverb (Down5Smear patch) 17:19 17. Go to www.reddit.com/r/zoommultistomp

Great video! I appreciate the philosophy around embracing the digital side. Useful tips too!
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 5 лет назад
Thanks so much! And yeah, the digital thing is not a bad thing. I kind of follow this Brian Eno quote (to an extent): "Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them." People rad on digital pedals and digital effects but eventually the digital quality is what will come to DEFINE an entire sound, I bet. The MultiStomp fits this philosophy almost perfectly since it's trying to be a million other things and falls short; that falling short is what makes it UNIQUE and entirely its own.

Hi mate, thanks for your videos. I have the MS 70CDR, do you know which delay mode is close to the quality and tone of the delay of Boss DD-3?
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 3 года назад
Thanks for saying thanks and you're entirely welcome! I've never played a DD-3 but my best guess would be the regular "Delay" since that one is just a digital delay with no mod options like the DD-3. You can use the HiDMP to tailor the repeats tonal quality to match which may take some work but could provide great results. You may also try the DualDigiD which is based on the Eventide TimeFactor but generally will provide you with "pristine" and clear repeats like Digital Delays are known for (just remember to set the modulation all the way down since I don't think the DD-3 has modulation on the repeats). You can also always stack effects like EQs and whatnot to try to change the sound of yr patches but remember that it will then effect yr entire signal too.

Hey great video! I'm up to get one multistomp soon :D hopefully you can help me with some doubts I have. Are you powering it with the one spot brick? Wich output? Ever had problems with daisy chaining it?
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 4 года назад
So I power is with a TrueTone CS7 on the 500mA output chain and it is not daisy chained to anything else. I've had some troubles with noise when daisychaining in the past because as you push the DSP, it seems to take more power and therefore potentially hum a bit more when daisychained. I'd suggest keeping it on its own line from an isolated power supply (generally speaking I love isolated power supplies for boards larger than about 4-5 pedals). Hope that helps!
@kieranlh4507
@kieranlh4507 5 лет назад
Great video mate, thanks :) I was wondering, when you power the pedal does it load straight into a preffered patch or do you have to cycle through to find it each time you power up?
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 4 года назад
This comment somehow eluded me! The MultiStomp brings up whichever patch you were using when you last turned it off upon boot. So if you were on Patch #23, it loads up Patch #23 on startup. You have to go into the patch list and hit the stomp switch in order to use the "Preset Scroll" mode which has to be pre-assigned as well. Hope that makes sense and sorry for the extreme delay in responding!!!

With the preset cycling function, it has to do a complete lap of the designated alphabet before it goes back to A? or is there a way to hope between desired letters (back and forth) without modding it to include a footswitch?
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 3 года назад
So far as I know it only goes forward through the alphabet so my solution for going back to a patch I need again is just to duplicate it and put it down the line aka A is my lofi vibrato, B is clean, C is gated reverb, D is lofi vibrato again. I also know nothing about external footswitches so sadly I can't help you there. Hope this helps!

How do you think the REVERB effects on this device compare sound quality wise to standalone devices that are available? Say, compared to, for example, its contemporaries like the TC Hall of Fame, Hardwire reverb, Boss RV5, Line 6 Verbzilla... Also, as the reverb effects on this device are now about 8 years old, how do their quality compare to newer reverb pedals? thanks
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 2 года назад
Hiya! There is not a simple answer to this question and ultimately I think you'd want to try to listen to as many demos of the reverb sounds themselves and compare across to the other pedals you mentioned since all of this is so subjective in the long run and my idea of comparable may be different from yrs. That being said: I have an RV-5 and a MultiStomp on my board right now so I can compare those in my own experience pretty well but I've not technically played any of the others you've mentioned. Overall, I find the reverb sounds on the MultiStomp to be really great and ultra useful even if they are not always the most pristine or perfect examples of any given reverb sound you may be looking for. The Spring sounds in the RV-5 are definitely better than the MultiStomp and I'd say every setting in the RV-5 is slightly "better" and more "realistic" or at the very least more representative of what they say on the box, if that makes sense. The Plate sounds like a Plate and has a little more definition than the MultiStomp but you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart in a mix and I'd say that's basically true for every other sound. The RV-5 has the interface advantage: the knobs are right there and you can easily change the sound without even thinking about it for more than a second which may be what you need. BUT the MultiStomp has to win for sheer versatility IF you don't need the traditional interface of any of the other pedals you mentioned. It would be absolutely silly to compare a pedal that can stack up to 6 unique effects on top of one another to one that can only play one at a time and the ability to stack reverb on reverb on ANYTHING with nearly unlimited variety within those categories makes the MultiStomp entirely singular and ultra-personal. Is the Shimmer setting as perfect and beautiful as one in an Empress Reverb or an Eventide or Strymon pedal? No, probably not. But can those pedals do a shimmer with an Auto-Swell before it into a chorus then into a slow filter for an even more gorgeous synth like sound? Not exactly. That's why the MultiStomp is either "better" or at the very least an entirely different category of pedal than those other ones. To directly answer your question: I think the reverb effects available in the MultiStomp are wonderful and many of them have become staples for me when playing (GateRev, ModReverb, Cave, ParticleRev, LoFi) even with two other reverb pedals currently on my board (RV-6 and the EAE Hypersleep) simply because the MultiStomp ones sound good enough and I find them to be really well crafted and versatile in functionality. I will also say: I'm the type of musician/pedal-user who relishes the differences between different pedals rather than tries to decide which is "best" and I think every single effect has its own uses. I don't use my RV-5 the same way I use my MultiStomp or the same way I use my Hypersleep or any other device I may have. If I had every single pedal you listed I would probably find something great or at least usable about each one and they'd all justify each other automatically because that's how I approach things. None of this is meant to put you off any of the devices mentioned. I just wanted to explain my approach since that will directly effect my response. I hope you find the reverb that works best for you and that sounds most best to you. What sounds good to you is far more important than what is "best". Happy to answer any more specific questions you may have and feel free to further pick my brain about anything you'd like!

Damn, just spent whole day with my g1on, thinking almost the same things before seeing this vid (I love pitch shifting and its glitches too and pitch delay, makes me forget that I was stupid enough to sell my rainbow machine), this is a great vid, my only trouble I can’t set bitcrusher to sound okay, it always gives me annoying shrieking high frequencies. And the last thing, I might be wrong, but recently I’ve realized that this is only pedal that allows you to create dissonant, e.g. 11 semitones, harmonies (maybe eventide can, but fuck no to spending that much money on a stomp box)
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 5 лет назад
I'll start my reply at the end of yours: I have no idea about other pedals that allow you to hit all 11 semitones but this is just further proof to me about how insanely versatile this pedal is to accomplish any of the most ridiculous things you could ever possibly think of. The bit crusher is definitely pretty heavy on the high frequencies in general; the "CrushyVerb" setting I show off here is one I use only when I don't plan on adding many other layers because it tends to absolutely DOMINATE a mix and drown out all other frequencies. I haven't spent too much time trying to fix that because sometimes I want to destroy a mix entirely and maybe there's somewhat of a difference in the effect on the G1on. Overall tho, HOW AMAZING IS THE G1on?? I have the G1Xon that I have on permanent loan to my bandmate as his headphone amp/sometimes looper but I absolutely LOVE that pedal as well. I haven't ever taken the time to compare them 100% side by side but I probably should because how different could the algorithms be?? I love these pedals just so so so much. These pedals have built a curiosity in me to explore all types of multieffects from the past because there just have to be amazing sounds hidden inside them. There's a Digitech RP3 floating around my local Craigslist for not much that may need the Pedal Friends treatment =D
@HornedBee
@HornedBee 5 лет назад
@@PedalFriends g1on is basically the same as g1xon, except for the expression pedal, I guess even algorithms are the same as all multistomp pedals, differencce is the number of effects in the patch and overall list of effect (e.g. I don't have some of the effects you show on my g1on, but most of them are the same).

@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 4 года назад
Oof, I'm not too sure! Are you using a Line Selector at the beginning of the chain? The Line Selector allows you turn turn on and off an entire chain of effects placed AFTER it. So yr chain would need to be Line Selector > effect > effect and you'd have the Line Selector up on the screen for it to turn on and off the entire chain. If you place anything BEFORE the Line Selector, those won't go on and off with the Line Selector. If there's something wrong with your footswitch, I unfortunately have no way to assist you. What does your chain currently look like?

@PedalFriends 5 лет назад
I sadly have almost no thoughts on the g3n cuz I've never played it and cannot attest to the sound, functionality, or versatility of the pedal. I can, however, comment on those aspects of the MultiStomp (in short, very good sound, very good functionality if you take the time to learn and know the pedal, and near-unmatched versatility). I don't want to be a bother. My sister gave me a used ms70cdr for Christmas. I'll love it more when I figure out how it all works. Some of the patches have been reset to whatever the previous owner wanted - that's fine, but I feel as if some of the controls are way off base from what the manufacturer originally intended. Do you think a factory reset might be a good idea -or will it wipe out some useful settings? I don't want to find out the hard way. This is my last bother to you. Thanks for all your advice and efforts. Good Job!
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 2 года назад
No such thing as a bother; I'm a reference librarian by day so I delight in answering people's questions about anything and love even more answering them about things I love! Factory reset will do exactly as it states: completely wipe the device of everything in it. If you don't like anything you hear in the pedal, just do that and start fresh and build your own patches. If you like some of them but dislike others, you can delete specific pages from the "patch selection" screen. Here's a link to the Zoom software and documents page: zoomcorp.com/en/us/multi-effects/multistomp-pedals/ms-70cdr/ms-70cdr-support/ I would highly suggest updating the software on the pedal first so you have everything as up to date internally as possible. The manual, I find, is really well written and offers a ton of "hints" that I actually used in this video. It can show you how to delete effects chains and, ultimately, my number one piece of advice is to just twiddle the knobs on any given effect to see what sounds you can find. If it's not a "useful" or pleasing sound to you, it doesn't matter since you can always just delete it and start over. Nothing is set in stone.

Wait, there’s a warped vinyl preset? Like the chase bliss pedal?
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 5 лет назад
@@Donato8nacho yes and no. There's a "vinyl crackle" option on the Lo-Fi Delay effect built into the pedal itself. I use a Lo-Fi Junky patch (designed by someone on reddit) that is built of a compressor effect and a vibrato effect to simulate the ZVex pedal of the same name (which is coincidentally a predecessor of the Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl and was also designed by Joel Korte AKA Mr. Chase Bliss themself). So the Zoom doesn't have a specifically built "Warped Vinyl" preset built into it but you can use the individual effects in the pedal to build something that sounds pretty similar to that pedal. Note also that the Zoom does NOT feature any ramping options like the Chase Bliss pedals do. All settings you set are "static" and stay the same and cannot be manipulated by an expression pedal or automated in any way. The Vibrato effect on the Zoom does not feature any control of the waveform like the Chase Bliss pedal does either, meaning you cannot get a hard chopping vibrato effect that the Warped Vinyl so excels at. I hope this answers yr questions and clears some things up for you and please feel free to ask more questions if you have any.

Hello! I’m not totally sure what you’re asking but I’ll do my best. I made this demo before I knew you could add effects onto the MultiStomp from other versions so I actually don’t have the overdrive/distortion effects from the MS-50G on this device in this demo. If you’re wondering about how to create pseudo-overdrive/distortion sounds from this pedal without “hacking” in the effects from other devices, I’d suggest using the Drive Echo with a really short delay time and higher mix. You can do a similar thing with the Lo-Fi Delay/Reverb or even using the Bit Crusher or Ring Mod. Won’t be perfect approximations of OD/Distortion sounds but it’ll be interesting for sure. Hope this answers your question.

Can you do tutorial on dotted eight delay
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 5 лет назад
Hiya! I would be happy to do that, though admittedly it's not a sound/setting I use very much. The simplest way to do it is by choosing any given delay effect (let's say you're using the standard Delay one), then scroll all the way right on the Time knob. It goes up to 4,000 on that patch then after that it starts displaying musical notes instead of numbers. Choose the note corresponding to a dotted eighth (looks like this: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/18/Dotted_eighth_note_stem_up.svg) then you can use the left most knob to "Tap" in your tempo. The bypass light will blink in time with your tapped-in tempo and your repeats will come out as dotted eighths since that's what you set the time to. Page 17 of the user manual also talks about this process for setting the tempo (www.zoom-na.com/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/MS-70CDR_operationManual_English.pdf). I'm still happy to make a quick demo of this process and other lesser-known operations of the pedal if you/others would be interested!

I was thinking of buying ms70, but then I see ms100 at same price... so, is the ms100 worth over ms70?? or is it a different pedal oriented to other stuff? I love delays and reverbs, I have a gt10 but, you know that Particle delay or whatever, that is not in my poor gt10.. I love what I heard from ms70 in other videos, then there is a vid that said that ms70 is not the best quality, is a rather cheap and small pedal, and there are other pedals which make this with a better sound..
@PedalFriends
@PedalFriends 2 года назад
Hello! So the MS-100 is the "bluetooth" version of the MultiStomp that originally had a few more patches that were not available on the other devices. At this point in time (August 2021), the MS-70 has the ability to use patches from all the other devices in the MultiStomp series EXCEPT for the dirt and amp options, though there are ways around that you can find by searching through the MultiStomp subreddit (reddit.com/r/zoommultistomp). The 70 and 100 are technically and technologically basically exactly the same and the quality of the sounds/effects themselves are 100% identical across the entire line. The Particle Verb in the 70 is the same as the Particle verb in the 100 is the same as the Particle Verb in the 50G; it's just a digital emulation and the actual stuff making the sounds is exactly the same. The 70 is very well-loved among many folx, I think, because it has the stereo ins and outs whereas the lower numbered devices in the series only have mono in with stereo out. The 100 also has stereo ins and outs, for the record. As for the "plastic" quality of the pedal, it is EXTREMELY robust and I believe the case is made of metal but I don't really know. I broke the footswitch on my old MS-70 because I was silly and stomped on it too heavily but that's not a common issue. More common is knocking off the encoder knobs but you can still use them so long as the little shafts stick out. Ultimately I find the quality to be fine and the sounds are magnificent for the price/board space the pedal takes up. It may not sound 100% as good as something like a Strymon or an Empress pedal but it costs 20-50% less than those pedals so you're getting a ton of value for what it is. The community is very helpful and responsive and there are so so so many amazing patches you can download online without even having to edit them to get great sounds PLUS you can build super intricate things if you give yrself the time and patience to do so. I've responded to a whole bunch of questions like this in this comments section and on my other MultiStomp videos so feel free to scroll down/check out my other videos on this pedal and see what else I have to say about the pedal there. In short: the pedal is well-built and still entirely unique for what it offers and for the price, you'd be hard pressed to find something as versatile, useful, and fun to play through. Please feel free to ask me any more questions you may have, okay? =)

@@PedalFriends Man, thanks, my only concern was that I wanted something with better quality, I have a gt10 so I cant speak much about good quality, but it would be bad if I went straight to buy something I know it has too low quality sound. Still I freakin love everything I hear from this pedal.. I dont like the sounds like the amps or distortions, but the reverb - delays are so cool.. they are exactly what I need. The format (as everybody says) is not the best one, it breaks and you cannot operate it with your feet, you can only turn on or off. Otherwise you will have to keep it close to your hand.. Still, there might be other pedals that can do all of it.. I cant find it though. Somebody else said that no other pedal has all the variety of delays and reverbs. Empress Zoia (if that is the one you are talking about) is cool, but I guess that it costs like a gt1000. Then other pedals tend to be based on knobs and not on presets. I wouldnt go changing the knobs everytime like a classic pedal.. I had the doubt because I saw ms100 and ms70 almost at the same price! the problem is that it is cheap, so you know something is not right. Honestly it costs half of a gt10 or a me80, so that is not a good sign. I would love to get some more money and get something of more quality. If I could just improve the quality of ms70, I love it just like it is. In some channels like Shoegazer they say that the quality is not the best.. they said something like "dont confuse me, this is not a helix", or something like that.

I think yr letting yr wallet inform yr ears rather than letting yr ears do the work: if you like the sounds you hear from something, who cares if it's inexpensive or whether or not someone else says it's "quality". So long as you don't strap cement to yr feet and slam it down on the pedal or act silly in general, this pedal will treat you well and I, among many others, have had mine work for me for years. I don't have any answer for you about what will work best or sound best because I don't have your wallet or your ears but if it sounds good then it sounds good and that's what counts.

@DeArmond Geezer nah. A perfect fourth down IS perfect fifth minus an octave. The harmonic relation thats relative to most people. Oh and thats actually how it can be derived when inventing the scales of music, using a 3rd harmonic up or down

Ah! So sorry. At which point? Someone was kind enough to write down what all my tips were and it is the pinned comment. I will paste that below: Tip 1.

It would be great if you could redo the video so we can actually read the screen. Your good explanations can't be seen on the device.

Thanks for the compliment on the explanations! Sadly I don't even own this device anymore so I'm unable to redo the video. I made it full-screen on my desktop monitor and I was sort of able to make out each setting but that's obviously not an ideal solution to this issue. I'd also definitely suggest scrolling to the pinned comment as someone was kind enough to write out what all the tips were and time-stamp them; I didn't intend on this video being one where you'd get actual patches/settings from it and instead intended it as more of a "here's a quick idea!" type video to help folx familiarize themselves with the device and then implement the tips on their own. Is there a specific setting you're looking for? I can try and scrub through and read the patch from the screen if there's something you wanted.

@@PedalFriendsHello there, just curious, but why did you get rid of this pedal? You did say in the vid that you couldn't seem to get rid of it. What did you find to replace it? I have an MS-50G myself, and I love it, but it is my 2nd one. Did return the 1st one, because I realised, that I wanted to spend that bit of my money on something else at the time 😊 Oh, and that barritone sounds great! Which model is it? 😄

@@nym053 You got part of your answer elsewhere BUT: I got an MS-50G and got rid of the 70 cuz the broken switch was simply too annoying to use live anymore. I use the 50 as a compressor and tuner in my current setup and the semi-broken footswitch was super annoying for bringing up the tuner. Baritone? I was just using my Mustang in this video. I'm watching it back now and it's just my Squier VM Mustang. I didn't own a baritone guitar till like 2023 and have never made a video with one.

My bad! Wish I could fix this at this point but I no longer have the files. Thanks for letting me know and I have hopefully adjusted since I filmed this =)

I mean this one still works so I can't really complain! Until it's dead-dead, I'll keep running with this one.

Sorry about that! I was only ever slightly good at making videos in general and it shows here. If there's any section you'd like a transcript of I'd be happy to rewatch this and write it out for you.
