Before ZOOM had privacy issue reported on news around the globe, I started looking for FOSS as an alternative and deployed on my SGP VPS. Just yesterday I managed to setup the Jitsi-Meet and will promote very soon. Today I found your video which will help me refer to anyone to think over using the commercial products. Thank you so much for this useful review video.

Yeah, until you get up to more than 6 participants. Because the A/V streams are send P2P and are being processed on the client computers. The only way to do it is to use nextclouds paid Signaling server.

Jitsi creates an immediate problem if, like me, you will not use Google on principle. Jitsi tells you on startup that you cannot expect the best experience if you do not use Chrome / Chromium as your browser. I think you would have been better to make that point clear upfront.

Hi Tom, just a week ago I tried to setup jitsi on a virtual root server. Indeed the install was pretty easy even with setting up LetsEncrypt certificates. Creating a conference was working but as soon a second person joined the connection crashed. I'd love to see you making a demo of the setup and maybe pointing out how to secure it properly. All the best from Germany.

I tried the very same thing, it was kinda a nightmare to get it worked, but it's all about the required tcp and udp ports to be opened, the hostname in hosts file, and in my case also a config file about recycling tcp session, causing high cpu usage. Now it works great, i'm very happy about this software, and proud about my 2 GB ram vm hosting conferences for a dozen of users.
@albercuba
@albercuba 4 года назад
@@lbfelix258 Yes. But once you have the proper steps, it works like a charm. What I noticed is that many people do not read the logs when they have problems (maybe because many are do not have Linux experience) But many gave me their VPS credentials and I installed it for them using the same steps I used in my server. Then I saw some errors that they didn't notice, fixed it, ran the installation again and everything was working.
@lbfelix258

@@albercuba Yes, totally agree. The installation itself for me was intended to be also a linux training on the job and the server now is working perfectly.
@joestau
@joestau 4 года назад
@@albercuba I am really familiar with Linux and I do check the logfiles. But I never worked with the involved components before. How high can you hang the bar for the average user. IMHO a clean install based on packages supplied by the project should work 95% of the installs. Now upgrade to videobridge2 was published and broke a lot of stuff again. I do work a lot in the Linux community and contribute but can't do that in to many places.

First. Good job on video. Jitsi sounds cool, I'll check it out. On a side note, at 8:00 lets get real for a second if you personally did not encrypt your data, it should not be considered encrypted. Thx much for the Jitsi review - I stopped using Zoom last end of March in favor of Jitsi and have to say I love the simplicity! Also, Question for you and others here... On laptops or desktops, sign in to Jitsi is very simple and straight forward, but on cell phones, there appears to be the requirement to download the Jitsi App. Correct? I was hoping no downloads would be a part of the landscape at all... Thanks again and I will definitely continue to follow you!

Doesn't jitsi indicate on their site that online version encrypts leaving host, decrypts on jitsi server the encrypts leaving their server to participants? Seems like unless you run your own jitsi server, it's insecure to.

I think the biggest question to ask one's self about end-to-end-encryption is how the public keys of users are signed and transported across the public network. If Bob and Alice's public keys aren't signed by Ted, then MITM is very possible.

if it's 1-1, it's E2E. If there are more than 2 people, it's a hub and spoke encryption. which is less server intensive. but you still need to protect the server

Hi Tom, I have looked into jitsi in the past to deploy a video conferring solution and I didn’t like the following: 1- by default when you host it it’s open anyone with the link is able to start a meeting, yes you can lock it but we were not able to find an easy way to link that lock to only allow our ldap users and creating 200+ users and passwords is a hassle 2- if I remember correctly the audio/video was not encrypted and that is a concern Huge fan of your content wish you all the best

Hey Tom, thx for the tips! Do you have an equivalent for simultaneous translation ? I have a client who's doing simultaneous translation, he's looking for away to doing thought video conference. The translator (the person, not an app) needs to be able to ear both parties and those parties should be able to ear only the translator.

We tried the server install of Jitsi and already tuned some settings for better audio (I work in an audio postproduction), but we cannot fix the video quality on the receiver´s view. It´s always really bad, although we send HD! Sometimes it can be tuned by sharing the desktop temporarily and then going back to video. Does anyone know a fix for that?!

I've always loved your work and this channel. I've always done my best to listen, you've changed my internet experience once I got my first pfSense up and running. I've been planing to run a private Jitsi server for my family, but I ran into a problem. I have dynamic DNS from my ISP, I've created some self-signed certificates, I've installed Jitsi server, I did a NAT Port Forward with ports 80, 443, 4443 on tcp and 10000 on udp, but I keep getting private ip connections, Jitsi works perfectly locally but on the internet it fails on udp connections. If you ever find to install your own Jitsi server behind a pfSense and find a solutions to make it work, please share your experience, because I would really like to solve this. I mean other than a VPN to have the same ip range with the router, I can't find another solution. Love you guys, Thank you

Zoom is end to end encrypted - it's just that there are ends you are not aware of. I had nothing but problems with Zoom. The host would suspend a meeting for a break and when I rejoined there would be no audio and I could not get audio back. I forced them to you an alternative and they chose Teams. i simply don't understand how zoom is this popular ESPECIALLY for enterprise and business use. It seems like a fluke more than anything else, combined with just corporate decision makers being lazy: "oh i used this at home with my family cuz it was free, so...may as well use the same thing at work". Google meet, Skype, Cisco WebEx all have equivalent features (sometimes better) and are from long standing industry giants (at least partially subverting the whole "i don't know these guys, do i trust them with data" thing, especially since most companies would already have data with one of more of these companies like schools using google for work, or companies using microsoft for email and office365). The only advantage to zoom i can think of is personal use where you don't want to pay anything, and even there, if you're already on google/have a google account, why not use duo? (zoom has some extra features, but if you really need those then you're better off paying anyways).

tl;dr: encrypted multi-participant real-time high-definition video is Hard aF The TechCrunch article specifically mentions that Jitsi is *not* e2e encrypted. And Jitsi's github page basically says as much: > "Jitsi Meet uses a P2P mode when there are just 2 participants in a call…So what happens when there are more than 2 participants? Then the media gets routed through…our very own Jitsi Videobridge.…media is decrypted by the bridge and encrypted again when sending it out…" Call that e2e if you want. To my eyes it's not much different than Zoom (or others). So Jitsi gets: ✅ FOSS ❌ End-to-end Encryption If your #1 priority is privacy via encryption, then maybe internet video conferencing just isn't for you.

So since both products aren't perfect, basically, if you have to make a choice between the two you should just focus on the following: 1: Does the product suffer from a waterfall of recent security issues including leaking passwords, personal data, video and audio and other vulnerabilities? 2: Make your choice.

@albertovaldes3741
@albertovaldes3741 4 года назад
You should really read a bit more before saying something like that. 1- If you host your own server then you also host the Videobridge service 2- Since Jitsi doesn't ask for any info about you, there is no personal data they can collect 3- The only data they collect is for debugging, maintance and further development. And you can see all that data if you use Chrome and go to chrome://webrtc-internals 4- They do not use the term "end-to-end encryption" but their communications are indeed encrypted. All the information that leaves a user's device is encrypted but WebRTC doesn't support end-to-end encryption (this is just a protocol fact, not a Jitsi problem) and that's why the do not use the term, just to not be misleading, but I repeat, all information leaving a user's device is encrypted
