Zoom virtual backgrounds not working? Solution by Chris Menard

Zoom virtual backgrounds are extremely popular. Many users have commented on my channel that their virtual background is not working. Many users have asked if virtual backgrounds only work with a paid Zoom account. Virtual backgrounds do work with the free account, and if you are having issues getting virtual backgrounds to appear, here is my solution.
Virtual backgrounds work in Zoom with images and virtual videos. As mentioned, virtual backgrounds do work with the Free or Basic Zoom account. I used a free or basic account to make this video.
If your virtual background is not showing up when you start a meeting, do the following:
1) Go to Zoom.Us and sign in to your account.
2) Go to Settings.
3) Turn Virtual Background on.
4) Back in the Zoom app, sign out of Zoom. Don't just close the app, you need to sign out.
5) Sign back into Zoom.
Your background should be working.

*To run a virtual background you need a fast processor in your computer.* Zoom has very specific requirements for your process. I have an i7 sixth generation processor. Hi! I wore a party hat and used a virtual background at the same time. The party hat would NOT show up. Perhaps you know how to make it show up? The odd thing is if I held the party hat with my hand, the hat would show up. Also, if I leaned forward closer to the camera, the hat would show up. Your thoughts about this?

You should also mention having a solid color background is essentially needed. You cannot have your webcam face a large room behind you, at least if you're in my position.

Not true. My virtual backgrounds worked perfectly, even without greenscreen. That may depend on your processor or your lighting.

Chris, I subscribed because unlike most channels, you got to the point immediately, you DIDN'T use that total waste to time saying the useless "so let's get into it", you DIDN'T cut to useless channel branding music and some stupid animation nobody on earth cares about, you DIDN'T do all the usual up front promotion jibber jabber "Go ahead and smash that subscribe button and hit the bell for notifications". ... Then you succinctly went through the steps, illustrated perfectly, and did a short recap at the end. I appreciated all that and I hit subscribe before you even made your appeal at end because you treated me as a user with respect, not jamming your marketing down my throat. thanks!

: ( for a second I thought I actually found a video about the background "actually NOT working" not a video on how to turn it on. My issue is it won't let me use the background without a green screen option (says my computer doesn't meet the specs. I checked their specs page, all software everywhere mentions is correct/up to date and my PC hardware specs are well above their listed requirements, but it still wont't work. Also I had no built-in backgrounds or videos on my list, kind of odd. I added some and they work (if I leave it on I have a green screen) just looks weird because as mentioned I don't actually have a green screen.

Hi, all. Apologies if this has been asked and answered already: I'm getting the "Computer doesn't meet requirements" message when I try to uncheck the "I have a green screen" box. My CPU processor is 17-3630QM CPU @2.40Ghz (yes, I know, it's a few years old). I just want to confirm that since it's older than 4th generation, then no matter what I try, I'm not going to get the Virtual Backgrounds to work correctly. I.e., my face will continue to blend in with whatever virtual background I choose, and thus I'm stuck with my boring white wall behind me. Thanks for your time....Donna

I’m pretty sure that’s just because your computer doesn’t have a powerful enough hardware to support it without a green screen. I’ve had the same problem :/ Hope that helps!

It depends on your camera. Zoom tells me my Creative VF 0700 requires a green screen. This is a USB 2.0 camera attached to my high-end PC. However, the built-in camera on my Dell laptop works just fine. Zoom support does not seem to list what cameras are supported or what makes a camera supportable.

Does virtual background work for a logitech camera? I've tried using this for my lenovo laptop and followed all your instructions and the background show up anywhere. Any reason why that is? I've also tried to update my zoom, but when I'm on the browser onto my settings, there is no option to buy a license etc. The only thing that pops up is "Basic and sign out"

I do see "virtual backgrounds" in my video settings drop down list, and I do get the thumbnail section when I click on that choice, but only "NONE" and "BLUR" are available to choose. I do not see any of the stock Zoom backgrounds. How do I get them to show up? Thank you!

When I join someone else's meeting, the virtual backgrounds that come with Zoom and my personal backgrounds do not appear. I can start a meeting using my account and my backgrounds do appear. same here. I have a powerful machine and I'v been using video backgrounds and fixed backgrounds with no problems for a year or so, now all of a sudden it says my machine is not capable of running backgrounds (says not enough CPU and memory except I actually do, I have a 4-processor new box with tons of memory). It only offers a green screen. I have updated to the latest version 5.0.3. It loooks to me like a recent Zoom update broke something, I'm going to try and get a copy of the earlier Zoom version that works.

Linda, it sounds like your processor can't handle the virtual backgrounds.

@@ChrisMenardTraining This is not the case. I have an i7 quad core and 16gb. Photoshop, Illustrator, and a half dozen other programs all recognize there's a quad core i7 present and only Zoom does not. Any ideas as to workarounds? Zoom's implementation of backgrounds seems broken/immature compared to Google & Microsoft now.

Great info....my question: I want to use a slideshow as a virtual backround...zoom has a beta for that, but it doesn't seem to work as a true virtual background....I mean I would like to be able to stand in front of the slideshow, as I would with any true 'background' and point at features contained therein, but all zoom does is stick my video image in the corner and that's not what I want...

Why is this impossible? I can't change backgrounds. I can't get to any of the screens you show on my chrome. I've been on a dozen meetings. Zoom is installed. I have a PMI. There is no setting feature for backgrounds. Why can't there just be a drop and drag or a tab at the top for backgrounds. Not sure what to do. Can you help?

Hello, my Mac laptop has a 2 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and is updated to Mac OS 10.13.6. Whenever I see the Virtual Background options the "I have a green screen" was selected by default. When I uncheck it, it says my laptop must meet the requirements of Intel Core i5 processor and Mac OS 10.13 or higher. My laptop meets the requirements, but I can't uncheck it. Help please? Thanks.

System Preferences/Security and Privacy/Privacy/Accessibility. click the lock to make changes and then check the zoom.us.app box to allow Zoom to control your computer.

I updated and all that this video said, and I can do a virtual background; however, I cannot add a video as my background. There are no default videos, only images and I cannot choose between image and video as shown on other tutorial videos.

Thank you! These instructions helped me re-enable Virtual Background! Weird that it was turned off in my account settings when it was on previously. I did find that just relaunching the Zoom app instead of signing out/signing in did bring the option back to my app, so that may be a bit easier. All the best.

Danny Ryan - Same thing happens to me. The reason is because my current computer does not meet minimum specs for virtual backgrounds without a physical green screen behind me (according to the requirements shown on the virtual backrounds section on the Zoom Help Center website). I figured it's time for a new laptop anyway and ended up ordering a new Dell XPS 15 with an i9 8-core processor.

I have my free Zoom account set up to add virtual backgrounds. When I Follow your steps, I can select one I uploaded for Christmas. When I look at my background, my screen shows have of the upload pic and half of my real room. Is there a fix for this?

Chris, your toot is making the assumption that everyone is working WITHOUT a green screen. You forgot to mention one of the most important things regarding not seeing a virtual background. It has to do with your computer's processing speed. To use the virtual background feature without a green screen as you are doing, one's computer must be a 4th generation i7 quad-core or higher processor or at a minimum it must be 6th generation Intel i5 Dual core or higher processor with integrated GPU enabled and integrated GPU's graphics driver version 23.20.xx.xxxx or higher. To use virtual background WITH a green, one's system must be at a minimum a Dual Core 2Ghz or Higher (i5/i7 or AMD equivalent) processor. I have FREE Zoom and I can see and download Virtual Backgrounds; but when I do I get a 1/2 Ghost like background, shows 1/2 the Virtual Background, 1/2 my current, where I am sitting backgroun. Now if I use my other latptop, connect it to the same ethernet; I then can use the Virutual Background, clear as can be. Is it that my one computer is low on memory?

That is a great question. RingCentral Meetings is powered by Zoom, but I have noticed that RC Meetings is behind on some Zoom features, including the Virtual Background features. As of today, with RC Meetings, a green screen is required.

Kate, they should be there already. I'm not sure why they aren't. I would uninstall and re-install. If that doesn't fix it, check your processor. Actually, you could check your processor first. Zoom has a specific requirement for your computer processor. I have a very similar camera to the one you were using, but my headphones are extremely distracting and I can't project a professional image, like you did. I have also seen a significant number of lighting packages, and I don't know how to chose on, or if it would help much. I am an attorney and I really need to look professional in whatever i do. Leonard, you don't see it, but I have two soft box lights to the left and right of me. Above me and approx 5 feet in front is the light from my ceiling fan. You can pick up soft box lights fairly inexpensive. I use a Logitech C920 web camera also that I keep eye level.

Yes. A video (MP4 or MOV file) with a minimum resolution of 480 by 360 pixels (360p) and a maximum resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p).
