Oh, that was TRAGIC! Love watching your vids. I'm brand new to this hobby, having only just purchased a couple of Flite Test kits and a Carbon Cub S+, none of which have been airborne yet. I hope to be able to fly like you one of these days, but suspect that I'll have a number of incidents like this one before I get there (and apparently even after I get there). Anyway, as always, thanks much for sharing. Steve

Thanks Stuff! It will happen, but how you pick yourself up is how you can gauge how successful you will be. I learn far more from a crash, than I do from a successful flight, so in this case I learned some things. I always review the footage to make sure I realize what and how it happened. Lipo seemed to work well, and this plane was a great experience.

Oh, I've "handled" many accidents ;) I just crashed a plane, because I was being too lazy to go pick it up last night!!! It was a huge waste of time, since then I got the privilege of fixing it for a mere 3.5 "short" hours ;) LOL Live and learn - right?!?!?

Man this still sucks watching it happen. I don’t know how I stumbled onto this again tonight? This plane and video series is how I got hooked onto your channel. That was an awesome project. The first time I watched this it was unbelievable. Now knowing it is going to happen, it’s still a bit unreal. After watching all the hours of modifications, then to end like that. Not even my plane, but a feeling of loss all the same. I wish you would have rebuilt it.

You understand why I was a bit heart broken, but you've now seen my basement, and can also understand why I can tolerate some loss ;) This plane was a labor of love, but when you put so much time into something, only to have it smashed to bits by an otherwise millisecond misread, you learn a little each time...for me, I've learned that mods to planes CAN be fleeting, but I still do occasionally do it for the satisfaction it brings. I'm so glad you enjoyed this project, and I can say I sure did. Our channel has changed so much over the years, and I hope that you're able to watch it with a new appreciation of how hard we've worked to be where we are. I think this, many times, is totally lost in translation for many viewers. Glad you're with us Jeffrey!

Yes sounded like the heartbeat monitor in a hospital room :(... Oh well, it was probably one of my best flying planes, but I made a few mistakes on the flaps...and it was getting old, but was in great shape still...maybe she will live again???

Sorry about the DH Vampire. It made me sad to see that happen to a classic old Durafly. I too have one just like it that I bought 6 or so years ago from HK. I put the carbon reinforcements in the wings and tail booms. Switched out the motor and Fan to 12 blade 4s. Did not add LED lights, but Ditched the landing gear and put skid tabs on the bottom for belly landings. (I fly from a grass field anyway). It just got rid of a bunch of extra weight for bigger 4000mah 4s. Love that plane, actually haven't flown it in years. It's sitting up on a shelf just begging to go back up in the air. Your video is motivating me to get her back out, but I'm going to stay away from the trees for sure. 🙂

The good news is HK still sells the Durafly DH100 Vampire (Canadian Edition) currently available at the Oregon Warehouse $159.25 PNP. You could do another build video with mods, and upgrade to a 70mm Dr. MadThrust 4s 12 blade alloy unit. It would be awesome and sound awesome as well !!!

Awesome flying. Cool to see behind the scenes in the mishap. Wow! Even Brian misjudges the trees sometimes. I guess the shadows on the leaves weren't there this time. I guess now is the time to ask, do you ever attempt to fly out a little further than your typical flights? Are you concerned the neighbors will complain, not able to LOS, or is that something you're not into? Keep up the great videos. Your channel is one of my favorites. From California, an old friend from high school days of your Uncle Mike.

That sucks man! My Vampire had its last flight a few days ago. I could fix it but just too much work. Will probably get another because they are relatively cheap and fly beautifully. Might even do a custom paint job this time!

Wow......don't bat an eyelid and get the upgraded Canadian version. I love mine and always said if I crash I will buy a new one without a thought. As our flying sight is a little bumpy I was always breaking or bending the undercarriage so now I take off from the undercarriage and belly land and problem has gone away. I use 3300 40C but lucky to get 5 minutes. I do like to give it full throttle so not too bad. I agree it looks and flies amazing so feel your loss. Cue the sad music.....lol

13:48 Yep I waited and it happened. I was flying my Viper by horizon hobby around in a field with a tree line about the same as his. Sure enough I wasn’t 100% focused on the jet and it ran right into a tree. Luckily all of the electronics survived so all I had to do was order a new fuselage and wing.

I WISH HK would come out with an updated version. Nothing with too many frills. Just a carbon wing spar and better reinforcement of the boom. I love this airplane!!

Damn those trees! I looked at this and the MotionRC Venon. The Venom is much more expensive, but I do like the size difference and features of the Venom. I am on my second Venom because I have a habit of flying low and slow. Not anymore!

Brian I've got a question. I've been running 4S 2200 lipos in my Turbo Timber Evolution but I recently purchased a LIHV 4s after watching another RU-vidrs review of the Evolution running on a lihv. I'm having trouble charging the battery. I hook it up as a 4s lipo charging @ 4.0 amps but it never comes to a complete charge. It will charge for a long time to the point where the charger shuts down for safety. I use a HTRC B6V2 balance charger and the battery in conversation is a GN3 GAONENG 3800 50C/100C 4S. Any help would be appreciated, thank you Brian. Love your videos! Airian

Lost a favorite plane to the ocean recently. Bit sad because it was my oldest and most reliable one, but at the same time OK with the loss as it had served me very well and I got my monies worth many times over. Crashing does give us the opportunity to buy something new.

Thank you for the sympathy :) LOL She might. I could probably fix her, but not sure I want to invest that time into a crashed plane, when I might be able to get another plane flying in less timer. I’ve probably asked you already, but how do you like those gyros? How would you compare them to SAFE select or As3x?

They are excellent! Not as good as AS3X, but much more ecinomical, and simpler. Safe Select is far superior, in that you can use the Auto Leveling, whereas this particular Lemon-Rx receiver ( 7Ch DSMX Rx,Stab,DivAnt - amzn.to/2GTlQze ) is only stabilization. Lemon-Rx does offer an "Auto-Leveling" system, which they call DSMP (even though it's DSMX/DSM2 - confusing, right?) and they offer the Admiral version, from MotionRC.com, which I haven't used and has different firmware.

Having just assembled my Hobbyking Durafly Vampire (in Canadian colors...eh!), I've watched nearly all of your DH-100 videos. You turned that into quite the model, which made this video extremely difficult to watch. But this is the exatc reason why I'm going to limmit how much time & effort I put into one of these RC planes. I did have a question though, when you had it setup as flaperons, what was the best target setting? And how affective are they as flaps and ailerons?

@@BrianPhillipsRC Sorry for not being detailed enough. When you had the Vampire set-up as flaperons (pre-flap mod) what setting did you have the flaps at? (0%-50%-100%?) Reason for asking is that I've read that due to numb aileron action as flaperons, you should never deploy flaperons past 50%. I just finished building my Vampire and as of now I've set them at 0% - 30% -50%. How wonky does aileron actrion get when flaperon is engaged?

Okay, NOW I get your question. Here's my advice regarding flapperons... I don't use flapperons on OUTBOARD AILERONS. If the wing has a FULL LENGTH AILERON, they work okay (Like on a biplane, or a fighter jet). I do sometimes use SPOILERONS (they go UP and spoil the lift, but seem to adversely impact the roll authority less than FLAPPERONS) and still have a similar effect. The plane COMES down quicker, but not as "uncontrollable" as if you were utilizing flapperons. As for the setting I would use - well, I wouldn't - BUT If I were, I'd use 30% for "Takeoff" and 100% for landing, and then I'd use EXTRA RUDDER to induce some roll in the absence of aileron efficiency. What I can say with certitude...Inboard flaps are WAY better, even though they're a LOT more work, especially on this plane.

That was back when Flite Test was doing more flight testing...I really liked it back then, not to say that I don't now, but they were different back then....Josh and Josh.

Brian, I'm considering getting the iX12. Have you been considering one as well. I've got a DX8 now, and I can't decide if it's going to be worth that $700 price tag? I know that I'll get back $300 +/- selling my DX8 which is in immaculate condition. So in reality the iX12 will only cost me around $400. But is it worth it. What's your opinion?

Very tough call! I would want the iX20, but same boat here...is it really worth that kind of cash?!??!?! I LOVE my DX18, so is there that much additional value? If you want the android system for the additional features, I'm personally a bit concerned about the OS jamming up, but they say that the Android firmware only handles setup and recovery of models, and not the Rf part...but I don't know enough about these iX transmitters to now for sure.

I’ve been watching your videos for a little over two years & never saw how the vampire killing zone was created. Boy that was rough to watch. I would love to make another, but I believe they stopped making this one. When and if we ever make a deal with MotionRC they have something similar, but this plane was a fun and cool project.

Yep, it was a bummer, but she was loved for a long time, and made many think a vacuum was flying above them in the air - LOL ;) I can't complain...she was a labor of love. This is when I'm so happy we documented so much of this build....now it will live on into infamy. P.S. My comment above made me think - it's so cool that I have video of flying planes with my now late Grandpa... I don't think about this much, but he made a few passing appearances here and there, and that's pretty cool to be able to go back and watch this years later.

I've had very bad experience with that brand of battery the cells are poorly matched and in very short time they do not charge up evenly to the point that they are not usable.

That treeline. Just a matter of time. Have your camera wifey help you find the remainder of the wreckage. I once had a hard landing of a plane and the battery pack detached and flew away in a tall stand of grass and it wasn't far of where the plane landed and I couldn't find the pack. Gone forever.

We found everything, we think ;) Pretty fortunate. I used to play disk golf and we'd lose disks in the most crazy places, but didn't lose them as often as you might think. We might lose a disk once a month, in our little group of 4-6 guys. I learned to search for stuff in the ground cover from that.

They didn't so much "go out of balance so quickly" as they were never balanced to begin with. Had the same issue with another ZOP 6S, but I've also found many other brands to be out of balance, just not to this degree. I need to try another charger and see if it's be charger maybe???

I know what I did wrong, and it was stupid...but I learned from it :) When we changed directions, I allowed my focus to shift at exactly the wrong time. It was my mistake, and avoidable :(.... BUT what can I do about it now, other than move on to the next AWESOME project :)
