In which I desecrate the ancient beauty of Western Australia with awkward attempts at landscape photography and humour.
Featuring:
a Zorki 4k rangefinder
Jupiter 8, Jupiter 12 and Voigtlander 15mm lenses
a roll of grainy Agfa APX 400 film
equally awkward and ancient Dad jokes.

This camera is a grandson of the second generation Leica II. It is a simple and reliable device. I shot with them without any problems when I was a child. I'm surprised that an experienced photographer like you has difficulty using it. I don’t deny that there may be comments about its work, but this is an old camera and you correctly noted that Soviet cameras were not of high quality. Thank you! Sorry for the quality of the text from Google translator.

As you say, it is a great camera with awesome DNA. My copy suffered mainly from issues with trying to mount different lenses that don't always register well with the rangefinder and a rather stiff and difficult to read shutter speed dial. Other than that, it's wonderful.

@@patternsinsand Zorky is an unlicensed copy of Leica with poor Soviet quality. It was exactly the same with rockets and vacuum cleaners in the USSR. The device can theoretically use other lenses, but in practice this is not entirely true. The device was configured at the factory with a kit lens. Interchangeable optics were not usually used with Zorky and FED. If you like mechanical toys, it's easy to set up. There is a lot of information on the Internet on Russian websites and RU-vid.

The universal turret viewfinder works great on the Zorki. I set it to 35mm and if you fill the whole view area, that equates to about 24/28 degrees.

Very funny delivery! I'm sorry I am only seeing this video now. You may have already figured this out or other people may have already commented but I have discovered that the threading on the Soviet M39 mounts are not "the same" as the Barrack Leicas or the Cosina Bessas. I have 5 Leica III's (the a, b, c, and two f's) as well as a Voigtländer Bessa L and R. On the Soviet side I have a FED 2 and Zorki 4 (no K). I have an ass ton of lenses for all of them. I have noticed that the Leica and Voigtländer lenses thread perfectly across the Leica and Voigtländer bodies (that is to say, Leica->Leica, Leica->Voigtländer, Voigtländer->Leica, and Voigtländer->Voigtländer). They also thread perfectly on my Novaflex adapter to the Sony E mount. The Soviet lenses will be off center if threaded on either the Leica or Voigtländer bodies and likewise the Leica and Voigtländer lenses will not center on the Soviet bodies. Note: by center I mean the top of the lens barrel aligning with the top of the camera body. The thread pitch is the same on these, so I am assuming that the "start" of the thread or depth of the thread is different. Usually this is not an issue since the projection cone of the lenses will cover the film plane but since the Super-Wide Heliar 15mm has that hood which is optimized for a rectangular frame, it will vignette on the corners. I suppose you could use the Heliar without the hood but you'd get some flaring (and that might be cool too). So rest assured, there is nothing wrong with the Voigtländer, it is an amazing lens. In practice, I have learned to keep the Soviet stuff together and not cross over into the West. If I want to use my Soviet lenses on my Sony mirrorless I use a cheap M39 to NEX adapter. I use the cheap ones because they require adjustment, which if you read it the other way, is adjustable. I loosed the holding screws on the perimeter, rotate the lens to center, then tighten again. The Novoflex is precision machined and does not allow this (and apparently did not take into account the use of Soviet lenses). I apologize for the length of this comment. With sincerity, I hope this is of some value. BTW: I own the 15mm myself and it is by far my favorite LTM lens. It was almost cemented to one of my Leica IIIf's for a long time but the viewfinder blocked access to the shutter speed dial and had to remove it each time I wanted to change speed. It was fine for outdoors but at night it became a hassle. It now has a permanent home on my Bessa L, a camera with no viewfinder or rangefinder similar to the Leica Ic or If. You can get a near mint Bessa L for around USD100-180 and also has a meter which is convenient. It's plastic, yes but that also means it is light. However, because it is so light and the strap lugs are forward from center it has a tendency to pitch up on a strap, but I've had no issues.
@patternsinsand
@patternsinsand Год назад
Thanks for the feedback. You're right about the threading, you can tell the lens hood (built in) is wonky on this one. It is fine when I screw it into my Canon P and I can access a screw on my LTM adaptor for Nikon mirrorless that will straighten it up there. I think the biggest issue isn't with a wide lens like this but once you get to 135mm that means your focus could be off a little.
@neilpiper9889

No strap lugs is the only downside with the Zorki 4k. I use mine with its original well made leather case. The Jupiter 8 is a wonderful lens. The Voightlander would be nice.

Yeah, my first guess as to the lack of contrast was thin developer, but Russians obviously have much better eyesight than us and can see those tiny little dot shutter speed markers (same on Zenits). You can get a device for rounding out bent filter screws online. I don't think they're expensive. My favourite b&w film is APX 100, slightly less grainy than FP4 with good breadth in the mid tones.
@patternsinsand
@patternsinsand Год назад
I've got to try APX 100 some time. The 400 produces good results once I figured it out. I haven't seen APX 100 available as a bulk roll in Australia, yet, though.

Maybe the mount can be adjusted (I wouldn't be surprised). Regarding the Jupiter-8 - my copy is quite good and focusing works perfectly well on my Leica IIIf; it is actually an old Zeiss lens design (Sonnar) that the USSR got their hands on after WWII (reparations). Not on par with modern lens designs, but very usable.
@patternsinsand
@patternsinsand 10 месяцев назад
I found out that some lenses made the rangefinder cam twist, which threw off the focus. A pair of pliers and a bit of effort turned it back the right way but lately I've just been using it with lenses that I know work well with that particular system. I love the Jupiter 8 and while modern lens designs are definitely technically superior, I do love its character.
@c.augustin
@c.augustin 10 месяцев назад
@@patternsinsand Interesting observation. My first sentence was about the rotation angle of the mount, so that the Voigtländer lens sits correctly for the lens hood to work properly (this is why I hate integrated lens hoods ;-)). But it might be fixed on the Zorky and a Contax thread mount (there's a difference between Leica and Contax thread mounts; I do have a Canon lens that screws on differently on my Leica IIIf than Leica and Voigtländer lenses, so maybe the Zorky uses Contax specs, like the Canon rangefinders did, being Contax copies).
@patternsinsand
@patternsinsand 10 месяцев назад
@@c.augustin Yes, I managed to fix that with the Voigtlander - just a small screw on the mount. Of course, then the lens is slightly out of alignment when I put it onto my Canon P rangefinder. I understand the Soviet and European/Japanese M35 mounts are a little different and that can even throw the focus out but that's never going to be an issue with a 15mm scale focus lens.
@c.augustin
@c.augustin 10 месяцев назад
@@patternsinsand Yeah, focusing is a non-issue even with the Voigtländer 25mm F4 Snapshot Skopar (no rangefinder coupling ;-)). And I think it is rather Leica or Contax type mounts, not so much European vs. Japanese (Canon copied Contax, Nikon copied Leica, so the issue could be between those two too). At least I don't have focusing issues with the Canon lens on the Leica IIIf (none I could find, even though not as critical with a 35mm F2 than it would be with a 50mm F2 or F1.5/1.4/1.2).

I have just purchased a FED3 Rangefinder in very good condition. The first roll turned out surprisingly good considering its my first time using a camera with no inbuilt light meter. All I need now is a 35mm lens. Enjoyed the video Thanks
@patternsinsand
@patternsinsand 2 года назад
Glad it worked out! The quality of these cameras is amazing given their somewhat sketchy reputation for basically not being Leicas. Jupiter 12 is the obvious 35mm option, though you do need to keep an eye out on that bulbous rear element - doesn't fit my Fed 2 but works fine on the Zorki and on my Canon P. As for guessing exposure, I just err on the side of overexposure and it usually works out ok :)

I agree they're quite flat. It was a challenge. The negatives were a bit thin and APX 400 is a low contrast film so I would have ended up with buckets of grain.

Can you explain a bit more about the issue you had with the Voigtlander? I have a 12mm 5.6 on my Zorki but I’m now concerned about the issue you had. What did you mean that the lens didn’t screw in far enough and was this something you were able to fix/adjust?
@patternsinsand
@patternsinsand 8 месяцев назад
The lens has a fixed lens hood that didn't quite sit straight once screwed in all the way. So the edges of the hood would vignette on the corners of the frame. Yes, you can adjust with tiny screws. There are opinions that Soviet camera mounts are a bit different to European/Japanese M39 mounts and that means the focus can be a bit off. You'd only notice that with a wide aperture telephoto lens but not something I've really encountered.
@stevep2430

Did that Voigtlander try to commit suicide?😁 How was you metering?
@patternsinsand
@patternsinsand Год назад
The Voigtlander works great on my Canon P body, just the thread is a bit different on the Zorki so the fixed hood clipped the corners. Metering was by guesswork but I think I lost a stop - the shutter dial on the camera is really stiff and difficult to read so I had it on 1000th of a second all the time thinking it was on 500th.
