I'm just learning about this aspect of New Mexico culture, but I'm from Detroit and we have something similar, called the 'Nain Rouge'. It was supposedly something that cursed the founder of the original Detroit (Cadillac), and caused the first Detroit settlement to burn down. Ever since that point, the city of Detroit was cursed by the Nain Rouge (a red demon in French), and every year about the time of Mardi Gras, there is a festival to rid Detroit of the Nain. A large Nain sculpture is created, and insults directed at the Nain are read publicly in order to taunt him (the festival collects local insults from Detroiters from the website beforehand). After the taunting, the Nain is forced to flee.
