Hungary during the first world war was a difficult place to live, especially if you happened to live in one of the many rural villages, far away from the grand city of Budapest, where the harsh conditions imposed on a country losing a war bit the hardest. Even if you managed to survive all the fighting, the riots, the violent occupations, or the Spanish Flu, there was always the possibility that your wife, daughter-in-law, or neighbour might decide that they had had enough of you and pay a visit to “Aunty Suzy,” the friendly local midwife. Outside of her duties as a medical practitioner, veterinary surgeon and fortune teller, Zsusanna Fazekas just so happened to run a booming business turning flypaper into poison, taking the term “pest control” to a whole new level.

What a gripping story! It strikes me how much of Europe was thrust from a medieval world into the 20th century because of the changes caused by the end of the Great War.

Thank you for trying to pronounce Hungarian names, as someone who grew up in Hungary I appreciate how difficult the language is.

Favorite this season. You handled the tough parts very very well. Incredibly inspiring, artistically speaking. Thank you for covering it. Cheers!

I think she was a sociopath and enjoyed having the power to end someone’s life.

Exactly. Nothing else needs to be said. Amazing that Ben tries to humanize her and say maybe she thought she was doing something good. Except there aren't other stories like this happening in Europe, so clearly she knew this was a wrong course. There's no use in trying to justify something so abhorrent. Everything doesn't need a motive.

So I personally see the abusive husbands as mercy. There was no way out for them. I see the premature or severely disabled babies the same way. There was nothing for them back then. No medical treatment no quality of life nothing. Fully that was mercy. I had a preemie. Without modern medical care they live brief horrific lives

I had a preemie who has always been an intelligent, compassionate person with no physical or intellectual challenges and is now a medical professional so you categorizing all preemies in the harsh, callous manner you did in your comment is incorrect and offensive. Before you make such ridiculous statements, please educate yourself about the subject you are commenting on. Also, you could only wish to be the wonderful person my adult child is and preemie child they were.
