To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
Play in the match began on March 25 and ended on April 5. In the first game Kostic resorted to the Petroff's Defense and a long-drawn-out battle for position ensued, which, after fifty-one moves, was adjourned until the following Monday. The position then had all the appearance of a draw, but Capablanca, with the infinite patience that characterizes his at all times simple style, applied himself to the task of working out a win, and in this he was successful upon resumption of play. In the meantime, the second game, opened by Kostic with an Italian Game, had been decided in one session in favor of Capablanca, who accepted the gift of a Pawn and won expeditiously after all of the pieces, had been exchanged.

What beautiful and complicated end game play by both masters ! Capablanca finds and grinds a tiny positional advantage for the win. A masterpiece of problem solving by the Maestro.

I very much enjoyed watching you break down the winning rook and pawn end game. GM Cappablanca 's style is what made me realize how important the center of the board is in the opening and middle game , I noticed in many positions in this game how you could see at least one of Cappablana's pieces was in the center of the board. We see GM Karpov do this at another level.

I really love Capa's games. He was so smooth, converting really small advantages into a win. I would never have considered doubling pawns on the f-file, and would probably have achieved only a draw.

This is game #26 of "Capablanca's Best Chess Endings." This game is misleadingly simple and drawn through most of the game until the very end. I expected more seeing this game in an end game book but I suppose Capablanca's ability to simplify and convert seemingly drawn positions was part of his genius.

Concerning [...16:56 IF Rg2+] as well as [...18:42 IF Rg4+], allowing a rook trade and pawn race: In both scenarios, white's king will capture the pawn on f6, then recapture the rook on g7. Black is ahead in the pawn race until...f7+. Due to that threat, white promotes first. White is up a pawn or two, and black's last pawn on h6 is about to fall. However, ignoring that sitting duck pawn, white might be able to force a queen trade if he can fork the black king and queen, with white guarding the b5 and g6 squares. Otherwise, white should be able to push his pawn advantage while black has to avoid forks that trade queens.

Thanks for showing this match I'm looking forward to see more games. I think Kostić got the chance to play Capablanca because of all the draws in their past meetings, so Capablanca wanted to show to the world that he can beat him and he did. Kostić was hell of a player but maybe never got the attention he deserved and not many people even know of him nowadays. That's because Capablanca wasn't very fond of him to say the least. As I recall Kostić said after losing this match 5:0 that Capablanca just got lucky and/or something like that. Essentially, he didn't want to admit Capablanca was a better player. Cuban didn't like that at all. So in the future Capablanca didn't want to play him and didn't want to appear on the tournament if Kostić's invited. Unofficially, even one of his conditions to play on some tournament was that Bora wasn't on it. Promoters of course looked the other way in Kostić's case because we all know Capablanca was one of the greates players that ever played the game of chess so it's no big surprise that Bora quickly fell in his shadow.
@bezzlebedeviled4756
@bezzlebedeviled4756 5 лет назад
18:06 -- Kostić blundered here with Ra3, because that position can be held to a drawing rook and pawn endgame with Ra2. The line proceeds: Ra2, Bxc5 (commencing the exchange is the engine's top recommendation, and also what Capablanca had been working toward), Bxc5, Rxc5, Rxf2, Rc7+, Kg8, Rb7 (this is White's only move that doesn't lead to drawing lines), Kh7, Kg4, (Rg2+ or h5+), ...and the Black king is fortified while the White king is exposed and juggling defensive responsibilities.

Cause it's a great Zugzwang Symphony this game Try to defend your king, the rook triangulates back where it came I'll take you down the only endgame where I get your crown You know the one that takes you to the 8th rank down a pawn, yeah Now move, you can't move, you can't move, you can't move but I'm here with my rook, I am here with my rook. But in a million different outcomes from one move to the next you can't get my rook, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

#suggestion I think you should define the number of episodes before starting a saga and number them. For example this could be 82/100. That means the 82 episodes out of 100. It could make the content even more interesting (out of the feeling of scarcity) and it could give us amazing finales. Thanks

They didn't seemed so sure as to wheter they would go for that line or not, basically the rest of the game was Capa saying "let's go for this" and Boris saying "dunno man" wich allowed Capa to improve his position little by little. So I think only Capablanca studied the position, bc if Boris did, he would see all the advantage he was giving by playing silly waiting moves. Maybe he knew he was lost but didn't wanna resign so early, who knows
