Is it weird that there are hundreds of videos analyzing Avatar and people still find new reasons to talk about it?

I think the simpler explanation for not using sickness is because as a writer, the hardest part of outlining a story is often deciding what moments are important and what moments are better to skip over. Typically when characters are sick or unconscious, they have little to no agency. So especially for a main character, it becomes harder to write them since they can't do much while battling illness. I think it only works in cases like zuko, cases mentioned in the video you indicated, and tbh I'm superhero stories (where illness can perhaps be as serious as in normal humans but results in more interesting and less debilitating symptoms due to the super powers and therefore can take on new thematic meaning depending on how the author decides to manifest the symptoms)

I think I know of one example of using sickness as a change. in Star Trek Voyager, there was an episode in which the holographic doctor wanted to understand his patients better, gave himself somehow symptoms of a certain flu, all while trash talking on how his patients are just wussies since he takes it so well, so a nurse/aid named Kess tweaks his symptoms so they will last longer than planned, which humbles the doctor and causes him to understand empathy even more. Its not a pivotal point in his arc since his arc is 7 seasons long and slow cooking but its still a point

Well, guess its time for another ATLA rewatch. Good luck with your meds! Something that i like about Zuko is that its a story about healing and character growth of a genuinely damaged character. There can be change but it can also be bad, people can get messed up, damaged, receive setbacks, but Zuko is an example of a character remaking themselves into a happier and better self.

Zuko would have made a great leader, he cared and respected his soldiers, he led from the front, and he was a sound tactician and excellent warrior, unfortunately his father saw this as a threat and sent him off to die
