I am retired now but had a test/repair business for over 11 years. The Wilkins 975 XL is my favorite. I have repaired many but once in a while one will not work even with all new parts throughout the assembly. My conclusion is that the brass frame becomes distorted and does not allow for parts to align well and those I just had to replace and salvage all the new parts I put in already. There is a comment below on the difficulty of replacing seats that is very true. I have the Wilkins too to remove them and replace them but more often than not the tool bends so much it looks like a pretzel. Getting the seat to thread back in correctly is not easy either and often cross threads. I used to go to do repairs at homes that had Watts there, and since I prefer to not replace valves; I would go to the customer, shake his hand, tell him he needs to call someone else because even though I have the parts I no longer work on them because they often do not work after replacing parts that are only sold in packages that are more expensive than new valves. That is a very bad design. I miss the business and my customers but retirement is wonderful.
I know exactly what you mean ! I will sometimes end up replacing the entire backflow valve even after having to replace all the components inside the old backflow. Waste of time and $$$
Loved how he casually said unthread the seats. Is there a tool for that? It is harder said than done. They rigged the seats to have to damage the valve body to sell more valves.
Had a new one of these 975XL2 valves installed 9 years ago but the water service wasn't connected until 10 days ago. The city did flush the main coming to the building before attaching the new meter and connecting to the 975XL2 assembly. No leaks during the first week but I found it leaking today out the vent hole. Perhaps a a few gallons over the past few days. I shut off both valves and it dumped more water out the vent, perhaps a couple ounces. Waited a minute and turned the water back on and it sputtered out another couple of ounces and stopped. No more leaks. I left a bucket under it and will check it tomorrow. Was this due to gunk or not bleeding it? There is a 3 gallon electric hot water heater upstairs that wasn't turned on until a week after the water service was connected. I know heating the water could create the back pressure. This in a small business building that is only open one day a week for about 6 hours so the plumbing demands are very low. I have a question about the 3 bleed valves on the back side, Can any one explain the purpose and use of those. Thanks.
Thank you for the customer support! I have one of these in my sprinkler system and it was venting a LOT of water when I turned on my system. I watched the Zurn 975 diagnostic video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3d2rNoroZ_c.html) and repair instructions (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ctYonNGogIE.html) videos - with those videos most do-it-yourselfers will be able to repair one of these. Believe it or not mine had a piece of debris in valve 1 that was causing it to vent just like the videos said.
