Zutara was my first hardcore ship. I remember not understanding what that feeling was. Then I realized I was a fangirl

I still think it was really cruel of bryke to openly mock the zutara fanart their child fans sent them in front of a crowd of people. Creators should never get involved in ship wars, especially when they're decades older than their opponents.

The creators made Aang look and sound like a little kid whereas they made Katara look and sound like a young adult. Combine that with how motherly Katara was towards Aang and to me their relationship came across like a kid with a crush on his babysitter. I get why Aang was attracted Katara but I never believed that she would have any romantic feelings for him. I really liked how Zuko and Katara developed a connection and friendship with one another and I think that falling in love would have been a natural progression for them if there had been more episodes to explore their relationship. Katara was never the supportive mother figure to Zuko which meant she could actually be herself around him whereas with Aang she always had to hide her darker side to protect him. In all honesty though I would have been fine with it if Katara had ended up alone. Who says she needs a man anyway?!

I simply don't think Aang was old enough for an actual relationship, one that even lasted a lifetime, by the end of the series. Come on guys, do you remember what being 12 was like? I could totally see Aang and Katara's friendship slowly turning into a romantic relationship when they are around 20, but in the show I liked the chemistry between Katara and Zuko way more than between Kataang. I would've liked it better if Katara had ended up with Zuko or simply stayed single at the end of the series and then, in TLOK they could've revealed that Katara and Aang got together later in their lives.

When I was younger I didn't really notice the shipping and just accepted that Katara and Aang got together. But after rewatching the series years later I totally see zutara.

Zuko and Katara always felt like the most natural pair, Aang always felt to me as more of a kid brother to Katara, it never felt right. I understood Aang having a crush but that’s where it should have stayed.

I will say this. While I'm a Zutara shipper, my boyfriend is a Kataang shipper. We literally have never fought over this. But I remember the war.

Tbh I always found Aang to be very matching with Toph, he is airheaded and gentle, she is grounded and rough, they are even more oposittes than Zuko and Katara, and they would bring the best in each other. Aang would learn to be more headstrong from Toph, Toph would learn to be a bit softer, not to mention that they would be so very amusing together, bickering and teasing each other like the classical married couple. And they would have been the most powerful couple of benders in the world! Aang and Toph had the best potential to me. It's a pity that they didn't have more moments towards the end of the series.

I feel like it would of been better if Aang got over Katara. Like during the earlier seasons it would just be a childhood crush then in the later seasons he gets over it and accepts their friendship.

I shipped Zuko and Katara when their friendship started to develop and it was obvious they had chemistry together. Aang was like a little brother to Katara.

Zutara was my original OTP. I never was too salty about Kataang becoming canon because I felt like I saw it coming? It never stopped me from enjoying Zutara or creating content for it. I pretty much was ignorant of the war as many people I knew shipped Zutara.

Aang had too much of a childish personality for me to see him with Katara in the end Besides, their feelings felt a bit one sided to me Katara acted like a mother figure or an older sibling to Aang and not a potential romantic interest Zuko seemed to resonate better with Katara than Aang

Kataang was just really weird relationship to me. Kutara reminded me of his babysitter most of the series. Call me bias, but I prefer Zutara because of their ying-yang relationship. They grew a lot together.

Everyone here going on and on about Aang or Zuko being with Kutara while I’m here looking at Sokka having his buffet choice between Toph, Suki, Ty Lee and the rest of the Kyoshi warriors.

I got into Avatar the Last Airbender when I was in college, so I obviously had different expectations of the show than the main demographic it was aimed at. For me Zutara was the more interesting ship, because it required more character growth and in a way subverted the trope of the hero getting the girl. I thought that Katara's relationship with Aang ranged from mom to protective older sibling, with only a small amount of naive romantic experimentation in season 1. Katara is actually shown as being rather uncomfortable with Aang's romantic feelings towards her in season 3, something that Aang pretty much ignores, which I found disrespectful to Katara. Aang clearly had a crush on Katara, but it always felt very immature to me and I had hoped that part of his character growth would have been accepting Katara's friendship and realizing that he would have to sacrifice his crush on Katara for the sake of saving the world. This was actually set up rather nicely in season two, where Aang is supposed to give up his earthly attachments in order to achieve the Avatar state. This entire plot line was conveniently forgotten in season 3, which was kind of annoying. While Mai is a total badass, her interactions with Zuko felt very awkward to me, so I was never a huge fan of their relationship either.

Our girl Katara had a lot of choices (Jet, Zuko, Angie, and Haru). At the same time, our boy Sokka’s had a lot too (Suki, Ty Lee, Princess Yue, etc.) DAMN OUR SOUTHERN WATER TRIBE SIBLINGS GOT A LITERAL BUFFET

Note one more thing that proves that at least Zuko had feelings for Katara : Remember when Zuko apologized to Iroh? Iroh was asleep, so Zuko waited the entire night just he could apologize. Then there is the scene where he wants Katara to forgive him, and he waited the entire night for her so that he could tell her who killed her mother. Just think about what Iroh means to Zuko and then that he did the same thing for Katara as he did for his uncle

Kataang and Maiko were so goddamn forced in the whole show. The interactions were so awkward nothing could cover it up. I'd rather none of them got together and all of them just stayed single and as friends.

I was a crazy Zutara shipper but I was still happy with how the show desisted to take its charterers in the end. Avatar was a well toled beautiful story that no show has been able to completely copy.

Back when I watched The Last Airbender, I really didn't care about the relationship aspect. I was a little kid so it didn't matter to me. That being said, I thought Zuko and Katara were going to at least date for a little while. Looking back, I feel like that was the only thing about this show I would have done differently. Aang was supposed to let Katara go, meaning to love her without attachments. He had this fantasy in his head built up around her. He was just lucky that it worked out. In the real world though, those kinds of things rarely do work out or even happen. Either you date and your crush wasn't everything you thought they were, or they don't date at all. A better story for Aang would have been to learn to let go of Katara and focus on being the Avatar. If the writers still wanted him to end up with Katara, they could have still allowed it, but later on after Aang had grown up. Almost everyone on the show thought Zuko would end up Katara. Even the voice actors thought so and made voice clips expressing their feelings. The guy in charge of animating the show even made art of them together as adults.

Tbh when i watched this show i was like 10 years old i didn't know anything about Relationships, Shipping or anything like that. I was just happy that they got a happy end.

When I was younger and first watched this show I had a huge disliking of Kataang. Even at a young age I felt like their relationship seemed really forced by the writers like “well we have to pair aang with someone” because he was the main character. Despite the struggle between Katara and Zuko I feel like it was way more desirable than Kataang. Katara and Zuko seemed to have REAL substance whereas aang and Katara just felt awkward. Of course this could be the result that I don’t personally find Aang a desirable partner AT ALL. He’s a sweet kid, but it was weird even for me as a child for me to think of him as a romantic partner. But the writers made Kataang a thing (which I personally feel was out of fear of taking a risk), and have wasted the opportunity of a deeper love story.

Alright I watched this all the way through, and there is one big part missing from the whole Zutara thing that I was sad to not see in the video. You brought up the "Creators said that Zutara was never gonna be a thing" well I'm sorry to say, but those two aren't the only creators of Avatar, there was a third and the third was the guy who was pushing for Zuko and Katara to be the End game couple. His name... is Aaron Ehasz. And I am very surprised to see a video about Zutara that doesn't mention Aaron or Elizabeth Ehasz. But I'll clarify a bit.... *Aaron Ehasz* was a BIG supporter of Zuko and Katara, and had he remained with the show they probably would have wound up being the couple. It was Bryke that was pushing against it. So when he says it was "never" going to be a thing, that's very untrue, because under Aaron it likely would have been. *Aaron and Elizabeth Ehasz* were the *head writer and staff writer* for the series. Without them Zuko is not the character we know him as. You can read that long breakdown of why here :) It's very insightful for those that don't know. *Team Ehasz: The Iroh in the Writing Room* araeph.tumblr.com/post/144433451120/team-ehasz-the-iroh-in-the-writing-room He left the show before the third season, whomever you want to blame for that, but he gets credit for a lot of the ideas that made Avatar what it was and he has never been shy about the ideas going forward from him would have wound up being for the show, which he would have done, particularly as he was the head writer of the show. But I'll just leave this here and leave it for you all to read from someone who wound up talking to the man :) "Also have to say, his Season 4 (yes everyone, there was a planned fourth season) and comic ideas he told me when I met Ehasz a few years ago weren’t too shabby. And when I mean shabby, I really mean things that actually do the characters justice. His thoughts about LoK(Legend of Korra) were interesting: - Thought overall they did a good job, but didn’t agree with all of their choices. Would have preferred a post-ATLA series featuring the Gaang, and if allowed to do both, do the post-ATLA before LoK. This way, it would bridge the gap better and fill in loose gaps (see below). - Was a little surprised by the way Aang’s adulthood was portrayed, and would have changed his characterization a bit. Was also surprised by the lack of Sokka and would have increased his role. Would give readers some information on side characters such as Mai, Suki, etc., and what happened to them. But that’s also due to his ideas for the comics. - Liked Korra’s character, but would have handled the romantic relationships differently. Specifically referenced the love triangle and wouldn’t do that. Wasn’t sure he would permanently keep the Spirit Portals opened. Also liked the equalist movement and would do more with that. Red Lotus was cool but surprised by air bending abilities due to HC. Was interested at the time to see more of Kuvira. - *Mentioned that ship Bryke doesn’t care for(Zutara) and would have explored this relationship in both post-ATLA and LoK, and potential consequences such as political stuff.* We had a good laugh about that one. Giving more info and exploration about post-war Fire Nation was what he hoped Book 4 would do. - Asked about his thoughts on Toph’s portrayal (I don’t hold back, heh) and said his vision was different. Didn’t outright say he hated or disliked it, but definitely that his vision was different and wanted to touch on her overcoming her issues with parents before LoK and having positive but realistic relationship with own kids. Would have handled Suyin and Lin differently (felt it was the wrong direction). - Similar to his ATLA commentary on Iroh, would have explored more of Iroh’s influence on Zuko and Spirit World. More Gaang interaction during LoK events would have been nice. VERY big factor, which is why I wish he was mentioned. And this is why a lot of fans wish the man was still working on Avatar during season 3, and hopefully beyond if it had gotten a Season 4 as he obviously had ideas for it. But here's a few more that break it down a bit closer from the reddit on what he was going to do if Avatar had continued. *These things would never have happened if Avatar continued:* - Katara/Aang kissing passionately under the sunset - Mai getting back with Zuko - Ty Lee joining the Kyoshi warriors - Ursa's whereabouts left as a dangling plot thread. *These things would have happened instead:* - More airbenders - Iroh's backstory - Water Tribe culture - Suki's personality being fleshed out - Aang's parents - Eventual Zuko/Katara romance(this is the big one most pay attention to) - Character development for Toph - The origin of the Avatar (eventually covered in LoK but drastically changed from the original idea) - The importance of Momo - Information about Kuzon - Exploration of powerful airbending sub-skills + techniques the list goes on and on. Aaron Ehasz, was truly the best thing that happened to the show: - He's the reason that Azula and Toph were girls - He and Elizabeth are the ones behind building Iroh/Zuko's character arcs - He's the one that stopped a ridiculous love triangle between a *male* Toph, Aang and Katara. Aaron and Elizabeth Ehasz were brilliant and had fantastic ideas about Avatar and the future of it going forward, a lot of Aaron's ideas going forward is one of the biggest "WHAT IFs" in the Avatar fandom. ESPECIALLY for those that ship Zuko and Katara. When you do look at his ideas concerning how he'd have continued ATLA after Season 4, to his Post ATLA Story, to what his ideas for Legend of Korra would have been. It's very brilliant and worth looking into. I recommend any Zutara shipper look them up, if you haven't already, Also another factor that Zutara fans have, that wasn't mentioned in this video, both Dante Basco(who voiced Zuko) and Mae Whitman(whom voiced Katara) are avid shippers of Zutara, and have admitted that they thought that the endgame couple was going to be Zutara. Likely due to how big Aaron was on it, and their own feelings towards it. So when you have the head writer of the show as well as the voice actors themselves behind it, and shipping it, and believing it to be the endgame.. you have the reality that had Aaron stayed on.. that Zuko and Katara *would indeed* have been the end game couple. When Toph first appeared I was actually hoping for her and Aang to end up together...

For the longest time I actually shipped Katara with Haru instead of Aang and Zuko. My main reasons were because both were dealing with absent parents, were allied against the fire nation, and the "evidence" of the hug they shared. Even though their time was limited, I felt like they connected really well in the scenes they shared ^.^"

Zutara was a fun ship to dabble in. But even if they didn't' end up together, their arc in canon still had a very epic conclusion. They started out as enemies and in the end they joined forces and saved each other in the final fight against Azula. So while their destinies were never joined they were always entwined.

Surprisingly, I didn't ship Zutara until Kataang became canon. I actually shipped Kataang because I was a little kid and Aang clearly liked Katara and he was the main character so I wanted a happy ending for him. Only when I got older with the last season did I realize that Zuko and Katara actually work really well together and amazing potential to be something more. Aang's love for Katara was a driving plot point for his character for a while (almost losing the avatar state because she was in trouble, etc.) and I was invested in seeing him become a hero, Kataang being a factor in that. but it got old to me when it looked like Katara didn't really like him back in that way or didn't show much beyond just friendship or mothering, like "Aang, take a hint." when with Zuko and Katara it was a slow burn friendship forged in fire that could have evolved into a legitimate partnership. Like was mentioned earlier, they seemed more like Equals, while in Kataang, it was mainly the Aang story and what bound him to earth, Katara. I just don't see what Aang did for Katara on an intimate level beyond going on this world-saving adventure. He started it all, definitely, but Zuko and Katara actually seemed healthier beyond just a long-standing childhood crush.

I've always been a fan of Zutara. Through the series it just seemed obvious that they were well suited for so many reasons. Even my mum was surprised when they didn't get together. Katara and Zuko have a relationship built on friendship which they had to work for. I feel like it was a mature friendship they could of lead to more..... for example Zuko understands Katara needs to find the man who killed her mother but Aang doesn;t really get it. I can see why Aang likes Katara ( shes pretty and is very motherly so she can look after him) ive always thought for Aang it was just a crush on an older girl that he doesnt really know. Katara also acts different around him ( more caring like a mother or an older sister). But I didnt see how Katara could see Aang in a romantic way. Maybe those feeling came after the show ended and Aang grew up a bit but judging just on the show and what we have seen in the 3 seasons Zuko and Katara were a better match.

I cringed every time Aang and Katara kissed. Because they're like.....siblings.

I am a 100% Zutara Shipper (but I respect any other ships). I've met Dante Basco, danced with him in a club and fangirled over the pairing with him. I even have a Zutara poster that HE was selling at his booth signed by him saying "Zutara forever" lol, but I accept that Kataang is cannon and thats fine with me because in many ways the fandom has given much more than what the show would have provided, and I think thats why Zutara is still so active while Kataang just is around. The main reason for me why I find Kataang a little weird (at least in the beginning) is that they were so young (Even if Aand was like 112-114 lol). In the comics when they would call each other "Honey" it felt so weird coming from kids. Once they are adults I fully accept their relationship but I think thats a reason why I preferred Zutara during the shows run because Zukko and Katara were/are older teens. Honestly when I watched this when I was younger I never noticed Kataang. I just never thought it would happen since I thought Katara was wayyyyy older than Aang by the way each acted. However, I DID see Zutara throughout the whole thing and though I didn’t really focus on the romance (I was fixated on the pow pow magic fighting). I was relatively surprised Kataang happened when they kissed at the end and just shrugged it off. Today, it’s ALL Zutara for me. They’re way too cute. 💕 ✨

Yeah Bryke didn't make Zutara canon, but they totally ruined Kataang in Korra. They fucked up Aang's character (favoring Tenzin making his siblings jealous...) and if Makorra wasn't enough evidence, they just don't know how to write romance 🤷🏻‍♀️

Zuko and Katara suffered more than Aang? His whole race was wiped out and was the only Airbender left in the world. Not to mention he had a giant responsibility ahead of him. I think they are all equal.

Definitely was a both shipper at the time as I was also a fan of Tang (Toph/Aang). I also liked Toka (Toph/Soka) as well as Soka/Suki. Personally I would have ended with Zutara and Tang, but I'm not completely disappointed by the actual outcome either.

The entire ship and In fact the entire show would've been better if aang and katara were the same age. visually . He looks like an outright child Its kinda uncomfortable to watch them kiss. I feel like there's some kinda age gap even tho its only 2 years

Relationships are give and take, but in the relationship between Katara and Aang, all she does is give, and all Aang ever does is take. Katara's the one that gives Aang love, support, guidance, she tends to his needs on all fronts and so much more, but Aang doesn't always return the favor. Aang is just idolised her. But Zuko stood by her. Their maturity, mutual trust and understanding, give and take, selflessness. Zutara all the way!

I recently just re-watched the show and in my opinion I definitely felt there could have been a better story line in pairing Zuko and Katara. Like you said, they seemed like they were on a similar level, and looked like there was more of a romance/relationship development, where as with Aang it felt more like puppy love, you know. Sort of a small crush of a prepubescent teen. I'm not sure if I've worded that correctly, but that's how I felt coming back into it. Really trying to watch the show in more depth, and with a more matured (I suppose) mind.

Although I am not unhappy with Katara and Aang as they are sweet and endearing, Zuko and Katara have a chemistry and connection that is far more natural, believable. I do not see it as reaching for "evidence"; at least I wasn't doing it. It just seems to me that Katara and Aang only have this friendly partnership. But, honestly, I also don't really care. I just love the show; the story is just amazing, beautiful...indescribable!

You could see their friendship as a parallel to the world returning to balance. All the elemental pieces of the world were divided and in peril but as the series progresses the relationship between Zuko (fire) and katara (water) come together.

My ships... 1. Aang and Toph 2. Zuko and Katara 3. Sokka and Suki

In the last scene where Aang and Katara talked to each other (before the Big Damn Kiss™) they were not in very good terms (see Sozin's Comet part 1). After that, Aang just abandoned the rest of the Gaang, disappeared for three episodes and then saved the world - and boom, suddenly Katara has forgiven him and loves him and they share their first consensual kiss. Excusemewhatthef*ck. For me, Katara was always the strong and independent one. The maternal power of the Gaang. And she's not the most forgiving type, as we know from The Southern Raiders. Whereas Aang... well, we know Aang. Based on his usual attention span to things, their relationship probably isn't gonna last long after the Gaang no longer sticks together so much (I don't consider the comics canon). For Agni's sake, can't he just live his life as the savior of the world and settle down later, probably with someone who's similar in that sense (Toph? I can't imagine her settling down very soon after the war). Then we have Katara, who probably would start doing her part in building a new post-war world, and an important part of that would need to be done in Fire Nation - a hundred years of propaganda would have left the people a *little bit* biased about the outside world, something that Zuko can't fix alone... and if Katara chose to help him out a bit, that could lead to slowly igniting Zutara (there's an ass ton of fanfiction about this, some of it well worth checking out). That would leave us with two pairs of opposing bendings (air-earth, water-fire), which makes sense to me. But that's just my opinion. A long one, so thanks if you read it through.

Let's be real it was a BLESSING that ATLA didn't come out in this day and age. Like it's said in the video,it wasn't common and as possible with social media to reach creators. Look at Voltron,as much as I love the show and content.The fandom is rabid and I'm lucky to have came in late.Ppl look for anything to get angry or start drama.

As a kid, I preferred Aang and Katara but after watching the show when I’m older, I low key like the idea of Zuko and Katara more.

I'm all for Zutara, always was, not only because they seemed to actually have chemistry going for them and having a lot in common but IT WAS MORE NATURAL AND NEVER SEEMED TO RUIN KATARA'S CHARACTERISATION. First of all Aang was 12 y/o mentally. Few that age know what "true love" is and his crush on Katara always seemed more like an obsession to me she wasn't in on. Well, until they shoehorned it in at the very last moment despite her not showing any interest in even talking about their relationship only a few episodes earlier and Aang disrespecting her personal space. It was so forced and dull, but I guess I could buy it with all the "build-up" (which I mostly call Aang gushing over Katara but whatever). Anywayyy, when I saw what they did to Katara in LoK I was so offended. Bryke put her in the exact place she managed to escape from in Atla, aka only being a healer and not important in any other aspect than being the Avatar's wife. EVERYONE ELSE GOT A STATUE IN THAT SERIES AND I MEAN EVERYONE ELSE BUT KATARA. That says a lot how the creators view Kataang, basically Aang and his 🏆. I really don't understand how you can support them, along with the motherly/sibling dynamic they have, after seeing how Katara's character was butchered for a guy.

ZUTARA FOREVER 😍 I'm not against KataAng, but I really never felt the "romantic love" from Katara, while Ang's love looks like a simple "crush". Zuko and Katara really gave me the "romantic vibes" and they really made me anticipate all their interactions with each other :)

Zuko and Katara became my prefered ship as I got older and rewatched. They make the more interesting couple that feels more passionate. Also Katara did have a dark side with blood bending and wanting to avenge her mother. Her dark side probably isnt very aggreable w Aang.

Zuko and Katara should have been together because they seem to be more mature and serious when they almost became a couple. KatAang is so freaking obvious! Like seriously. Aang can be friendly and kind but he is also immature and sort of a goody-two shoes. HE IS A CHILD FOR GOD'S SAKE! Even if he is 112 years old, he really does not match with Katara at all.

Zuko and Katara was my favorite childhood ship ;-; aaaanndd pretty much still is.

I liked Aang and toph together especially since toph introduction episode they developed a bond. Also if you remember the flashback in the legend of korra that whole scene where Toph still called Aang "twinkle toes" even though they're adults now you can call that dialogue "teasing between a married couple".

I never had an opinion on kataang or zutara, I was busy shipping suki and sokka.

this was actually my most preferred ship when I binge watched the last air bender... I actually thought they were going to end up together...and I even thought Aang was gonna end up with that girl who had an obsessive infatuation on him...I forgot the name of the girl. (EDIT) the girl's name was Meng.

Honestly Aang always felt too childish to me- I just couldn't picture him as a romantic interest. I don't hate Kataang and I was happy for them, but Zutara actually gave me life

Even though Kataang is cannon, I still ship Zutara. But I respect the creator's decision and I'm okay with it. We still have the fanfics, after all.

I was a little kid when I first saw the show. as a kid I never felt any romance between katara and aang. Every time they kissed I was like WTF?!and according to the things I knew from love back in the day I was sure zuko and katara were in love. all I'm saying is that as a kid I got that conclusion which proves how weak kataang is.

I think Zutara could easily have gone either way, but I think that Kataang was a mistake on the creators’ part, seeing as they seemed to just jump to it almost as soon as the two met as if there was no other option than the main male and female protagonists being together, although I appreciate the exploration of whether or not they had chemistry, that was just marred by the apparent presumption that it was romantic, while I at least felt that Aang’s feelings for Katara seemed to be him assuming that any intimate bond he had with a girl must be romantic, which would make sense with the fact that, from what we see of his life in the Air Temple, he hadn’t had much, if any, interraction with girls of his age
