ZX Spectrum to Amstrad CPC - The Amstrad CPC is such a flexible computer that its limitations only serve to add extra to its character. Love them or hate them, ZX Spectrum ports to Amstrad CPC definitely add to the numbers of games released for the Amstrad computer. Join me in part 1 of Speccy ports to the Amstrad CPC.
Thanks for your support, leaving a comment, or rating my video! I really appreciate it.

The reason that the Amstrad received so many Spectrum ports was because they shared the same processor and that the Amstrad simply didn’t sell in as many numbers, so a lot of developers didn’t want to spend the money making a new Amstrad version of a game when it could quickly get a game up and running using the Spectrum versions assets.

I definitely agree for the most part, but not always the case in regards to software sales and there’s quite a few titles that either started out life on the CPC and were then ported to other systems. Mastertronic used to reveal game sales and the CPC wasn’t too far behind. Which is why almost everyone made games for it. People say “It was only the 3rd machine in the UK”, which wasn’t a bad thing believe it or not as it cost a damn sight more than the competition in 1984. It found a place in the market and that’s all that matters really. Plus it’s also quite a good thing considering it came late to the party, but in France and other countries it was more successful.

Your observations may be on the money for the UK market, but in France, Spain, CPC was king and speccy but a tiny teensy market. Hence the steady number of french and spanish games for the cpc.

@@jda4887 I remember going to Calais a few times as a kid, later to load my van full of cigarettes and beer. The Auchan supermarket had an entire section dedicated to Amstrad CPC games. I wish I’d have photographed it, thing of beauty. I used to buy loads of games from there during our visits. What surprised me it that almost every French person I talked to could speak perfect English

Something’s gone wrong with the final entry in your video. When it comes to _The Flintstones_ the 128K Spectrum version does have music in it (maybe you were playing a 48K version?), but when you went to the Amstrad version the footage is of a completely different game that is also based on the same licence: a game called _Yabba Dabba Doo!,_ whose gameplay and look is markedly different.

Oh no 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’ve just checked, now there’s two really bad Flintstones games I need to wipe from my memory for the Amstrad. Thanks for letting me know 😉

I was expecting _Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone_ and _Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade_ to be in this list; in both cases the Amstrad CPC is a Speccy port that runs painfully slowly (especially _DD3,_ which is especially sluggish and has horrible scrolling). The Amstrad CPC version of the latter is so blatantly a Spectrum port that it even uses the same colour as the actual Spectrum version!
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay 3 года назад
I liked Indiana Jones in the Arcade and on the Amstrad, although I always wished it wasn’t a Speccy port, would have looked brilliant in mode 0. Yes, unfortunately although Double Dragon 3 looked half decent, the lack of speed killed the beast. No code optimisation whatsoever, crying shame.

I loved Fury on the CPC. The game was rather easy, but it made it easy enough for me to understand what to do. (I didn't understand English then.) The game is buggy, however, and randomly crashes after a time. And all the DSK dumps I tried either on emulators or on real hardware crash too. Too bad, i remember having been able to buy the most expensive car and thus kind win the game.

I personally don't recall having anywhere near the same affection for Fury. But I definitely played it until I could take no more ;-) Very sad you've not been able to find a working dump. Have you tried CPCGameReviews?

@@ClassicReplay I'll check this site indeed. The issue usually appears after about 6 races. It looks like a memory corruption of the sprites at first, then crashes the game afterwards.

It was the same problem with MSX, Spectrum port where so much under the performance of the MSX computer and ruined it all.
@eto6197
@eto6197 3 года назад
I still don't have a clear opinion if the Spectrum conversion helped or harmed the CPC. One one side, it helped to get the number of games up, on the other side, they often made the CPC look like it's a slower Speccy clone with worse graphics. One thing I really don't understand is the usage of the word "good" for those conversions. In my definition a "good conversion" is a conversion that is not only simply converted to the target platform but also properly adapted to its capabilities. But for almost all Speccy to Amstrad ports, its almost always "worse" and we can be happy, if the conversions are at least not much worse than on the Spectrum. I would call those, that are playable and at least close to the original "acceptable" or maybe "conversions that don't suck" - but not good.
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay 3 года назад
The way I look at it, did you have fun, yes or no? If the latter then so be it. I’ll be honest I loved playing Super Hang On and couldn’t have imagined a childhood without it. Same for R-Type and many more, plus for at least two years of owning a CPC, I had a green screen, so I didn’t realise for the most part.
@eto6197
@eto6197 3 года назад
@@ClassicReplay R-Type is the perfect example: yes, it was fun, I loved playing it, BUT I was always also very disappointed. I didn't want to show it to any owner of any other 8 bit computer, as it made the CPC look really bad. For me, this is an "acceptable" conversion if it's still fun but doesn't use the hardware properly. And it's good, if it's fun and properly uses the hardware. But hey, it's just my personal definition ;-)

@@eto6197 My cousin had the MSX and my other cousin the Speccy at the time. When they came around and played on my CPC, they couldn’t get enough. So much so that when I went around their houses about six months later, they both had CPC’s. It was one of those computers that people knew not to judge on Speccy ports alone, once they actually played on it. If you wanted to show off in the early days, just load up Gauntlet, Spindizzy, Head over Heels, 3D Grand Prix or Sorcery 👍🏻
@AnthonyFlack
@AnthonyFlack 3 года назад
What about the Spectrum conversions where the code is a straight port but the graphics have been redrawn in mode 0? Eg. Commando, Bomb Jack, Chase HQ, Smash TV etc. Or the ones like Head Over Heels where the graphics have been redrawn in colour?
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay 3 года назад
@@AnthonyFlack then they’re no longer straight ports imho, as the code has changed and mode 0 can’t be done on the Speccy. Whilst I agree it shares code, you could argue the same case for Dizzy games or Freescape that all started out life on the Amstrad CPC, but then ported over to the Speccy. But nobody ever questions if Dizzy is a Speccy game or not. It’s less a case of sharing code, but more a case of sharing the same CPU architecture.

it's interesting that the 4-colour cpc games do not seem to make much use of the colour grid. they often just use the same 4 colours across the whole screen. maybe there is a technical reason for this, but if so i've not heard of it.

Often users don't realize the complications of a port from the ZX Spectrum. While the Amstrad CPC might seem a more powerful machine all around, it wasn't. It had better color modes but these modes also used more memory and required more CPU time to render graphics. The Amstrad screen takes a big amount of RAM leaving almost the same available RAM as in a ZX Spectrum. Besides, the graphics of the game also used more storage memory leaving the Amstrad at a slight disadvantage on most games. They shared the same CPU at the same speed. That makes the Amstrad twice as slow rendering graphics than the ZX Spectrum. The consequence was that the games that used the ZX Spectrum hardware to its maximum possibilities could hardly be converted to the Amstrad keeping all the features, speed and also improving the graphics. The developers had to deal with slower rendering and less memory for the graphics. The Amstrad should have used a faster CPU or hardware assisted rendering, and at least an additional 16KB for the screen. Then it would have really been a better computer in all aspects to the ZX Spectrum. Ports would have been easier and improving them would have been always possible. Anyway, there were bad games in the ZX Spectrum that didn't make good use of the hardware, and those could have turned into decent or good conversions in the Amstrad, although this didn't always happen. Teams that would do a choppy job in the ZX Spectrum would probably do the same for the Amstrad. There were bad games in all computers of the era.
@ClassicReplay
@ClassicReplay Год назад
If you look at Renegade, Head over Heels, Savage and Chase HQ. I would have thought that was enough evidence the CPC was better. Still not convinced. Then look at new games such as pinball dreams and the upcoming Vespertino. You could never do that on a ZX Spectrum.
@berarma

@@ClassicReplay I haven't explained myself very well, it seems. I'm not saying there can't be games that look and play better than ZX Spectrum games. I'm saying those games that are well programmed and use every cycle of the CPU clock and every bit of RAM will be very hard to port to the Amstrad. Games designed specifically around the Amstrad limitations will look better than ZX games, no doubt. Games that weren't very taxing on the ZX will be more easy to port too. And some conversions did a good job because they did the changes that were needed in the game to make it work without loosing its appeal, smaller graphics, less sprites on screen, slightly less responsive controls but still good, etc. I'm not saying the ZX is a better computer, just saying about the complications of conversions. Sometimes you have to redo the game to work around a different set of limitations. It wasn't just adding color and sound.

I owned _She Vampires_ when I was a child and it's a terrible game. Both it and _Dandy_ have a 'bug' that means that the game is much more difficult to play if you use the keyboard instead of the joystick. I think most of your opinions of the other CPC ports are fair. My brother bought _Badlands_ when our family went on a trip to London. It was a few days until we got back home to our CPC, only to find that it was a huge disappointment! My parents, bless them, bought _Garfield: Winter's Tail_ for us. It's a terrible game as well but I persevered with it because we didn't own many other games for the CPC at the time. _Deactivators_ is a game that really doesn't get the recognition it deserves on the CPC. I discovered it a few years ago (I can't remember when) after being put off because I thought it looked very complex. Once I got into it I found it quite engrossing,. It's a really original concept. I'm looking forward to watching the second part when it's uploaded.

Well, I’ve been known to like games that other people hate. Personally I thought it was alright, and I stick by Dandy, although I prefer the Speccy version. I did use Q,A,O,P a lot back in the day, but mostly played with my Star Cursor Joystick. I think Badlands is crappy today, but back then I thought it was alright, but personally I preferred Grand Prix Simulator, Ivan Stewart’s and probably Super Cars. But I think you’re probably right and I’ve been wearing my rose tinted goggles too much of late ;-) Thx for stopping by and leaving a comment.
