Okay, the best lyric ever: “I kept thinking ‘bout that night in Memphis, Lord I thought I was in heaven. But I was stumbling through the parking lot of an invisible 7-11. What was I doin’ out there?” Love these guys.
Me as well...ever since I heard La Grange on radio station KADI, The Rock of St. Louis, back when it was brand new! It's great that old farts like us never get old, either...we're still cool as hell!
@@cavecookie1 first concert was El Loco in 1980 and I had Fandango in 8-track Saw them Evansville Indiana at an Amphitheater with Steppenwolf, Louisville Kentucky with Lynyrd Skynyrd Lexington Kentucky, another show in Louisville Kentucky on the 6th row recycler tour, Rhythmean tour, xxx tour.
@@lewiscox9768 Sadly, I have never seen them live. I always seem to find the most rural, out-of-the-way places to live, and concerts were hundreds of miles away so my concert experiences are limited. That is one of the bands I regret not seeing at least once!
Smoked a Cigar with Billy Gibbons in a Bar in a Private Party after a Concert in Auckland New Zealand in the late Eighties, that Dude is Super Intelligent, and he was an Extremely Kind Gentleman to everyone. Good Times!
Love how you’ve gone down the ZZ Top rabbit hole; am in my 70’s & have seen them 3 times-once in Lis Angeles with an up & coming band named Bon Jovi & twice in Dallas-first time with George Thorougood as opener & second time they opened for Jimmy Buffet(talk about a party concert with the parrot heads & Top fans together). Am a subscriber & enjoy your reactions & you’ve opened me up to other artists, thanks peace & love
This is a GREAT ZZ Top tune. Love these guys. Everything they do is so badass and groovy and southern and they don’t shy away from suggestive songs about sexy ladies. If you want a slower jam by them, check out “Rough Boy”
Jamal, these guys are insane. Ive seen them at the astrodome, reliant stadium, in houston. And in late 60s at a small bar in garden oaks in houston.🎸🎸🥁 3 guys make all that great music. 💞💞💞 . Thanks guy😍
Texas Shuffle. That's the secret to ZZ TOP sound. It's not the blues but based upon the concept. As the guys say "ZZ TOP are interpreters of the blues.
Met the “Reverend William F.” at Gary’s Hats and Boots, a western wear store in downtown Houston, was 1975 or 76. Was there with my best buddy checking out bull ropes (we were 16 at time planning on becoming professional bull riders). Billy strolled in, bought several pairs of boots, belts and a couple of hats. Then did the weirdest thing, had them cut the dang brim down (a trend that caught on among future “urban cowboys”). He was very polite, gave us a number to call for passes to the historical show coming up at the University of Tea Sippers (Texas), I’m a proud Aggie. Did you catch the Howlin’ Wolf nod? They done gud for a little ole band from Texas.
It was 1974 if it was at UT Memorial Stadium. They haven’t had another rock & roll show there since because the crowd destroyed the porcelain in the bathrooms and built bonfires on the field.
The songs from Eliminator had three things. The '32 Ford coupe, ZZ Top keychain, and beautiful women. This came after. In concert, they had a laser naked cowgirl floatin' 'ross the ceiling of the arena. It was badass! Saw them with Jeff Healy Band, R.I.P. I stand corrected. '33 Coupe.👍🏼
@@Bandit77TA I wasn't sure. I thought '33, but read stories that it was both years, and a combo. Either way, badass. Thanks for setting me straight. 👍🏼✌🏼
@@anthonypettipas6885 Bad ass for sure. I wanted that car so bad when I was a kid. I remember building a model kit of it in the 80s. As close to ever owning it I will get. Lol.
Giving their creds to the blues... "She was mumbling to some Howling Wolf, about some voodoo healing" One of my favorite ZZ tunes, thx Jamel!!! Be well
Billy loved to bend strings and BB King noticed how hard he was working. BB asked Billy about the gauge of strings that he was using. BB told him to junk the heavy gauge strings and use the lightest gauge that his fingers would not break. BB said that he could learn to pick them but when you bend strings playing the blues, your fingers can break them. If this happens, move up another gauge. Texas Blues were sent to another level that day. Thank you B B King.
Not everyone has experienced "stmbling through the parking lot, of an invisible 7-11" but those who have, know exactly what he is talking about. This is a great song and a great song for giving your subwoofer a workout.
Was hoping you would get to this one...they never ceased to amaze me in 50 years.Same 3 people for 50 years...unbelievable,huh?They were the definition of “ cool”.
so the order of zz top records in the 80s: Eliminator Afterburner Recycler This song is off the Recycler album. The Eliminator car was featured on Eliminator and Afterburner videos, though it does show up in a few on Recycler, most notably "rough Boy" where the car is in a space age car wash.
The three hot chicks in the old Ford street rod was mostly associated with the Eliminator and Afterburner albums which, I think, were before this. I love just about all the ZZ-Top albums going back to the ‘70s but Eliminator from the mid-80s is just the most badass album of them all to me.
The car in this video(1990) from the album Recycler was a customized '48 Cadillac called "Cadzzilla." The Videos for the songs(Legs, Gimme All Your Lovin' and Sharp Dressed Man) from the Eliminator(1983) album had a '33 Ford Coupe named, Eliminator.
Hey Jamel! You could research this, but I heard years ago that ZZ TOP was a brand of rolling papers for your smokes back in the day! Before they decided to name the band that, they were called Moving Sidewalks. I saw them in concert in Tacoma Washington years ago, and during one part of the show, Dusty and Billy were standing next to each other center stage, and when the song ended that they were playing, without them moving at all they slid apart from each other for several feet! And I always figured they got that idea from the moving sidewalk era.
I was just listening to this song on my playlist and wanted to see the old video from when I was a kid. I stumbled across this video and I'm glad I did. It's cool to see your reaction to one of the coolest party bands from when I was a kid. Those three guy had some of the slickest and groviest sounds of the 70s & 80s.
A friend talked me into going to one of their shows 22 years ago. I only knew a few hits, wasn't all that psyched. To this day, one of the coolest concerts I've ever been to. AND they were 2nd on a twin bill with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
ZZ Top is like Queen. You hear Brian May's guitar before any words, you know it's Queen. You know 99 times out of 100, just by the sound of the guitar hook, it's gotta be Top!
when Jimi Hendrix was asked who the best guitar player was, he replied Billy Gibbons .. can't argue with that.....cool tune, cruisin' music back in the day
Saw them back in the day (but not the day- day) on the Recycler Tour when their opening act was these skinny dudes no one had heard of yet called the Black Crowes!
Oh myyy. I was in my late teens when a lot of these videos were first on MTV. My Mother, being a cool parent, really REALLY liked ZZTop. Years later I got to see them in concert....she was soooooo excited for me! If they're ever in your area, you should go. EXCELLENT show. They don't HAVE to do much on stage, they're just THAT GOOD.
Their guitars in the video are the muddy wood guitars, created by Bolin Guitars from slabs of wood from Muddy Waters child hood home. To honor one of their musical hero’s.They are at the delta blues museum in Clarksdale Mississippi.
I've seen them play many times, including the Eliminator tour, and agree they kick ass ;-) I'd really appreciate you checking out some of their older stuff from Rio Grand Mud. "Just Got Paid" is one of my faves from that album. Back then their sound wasn't so polished. They played more like a bar band.
Sharing the music has been a pleasure to listen too. If I may request a song from Kenny Rogers. It’s a song about the season we are in right now called The Greatest.
Came of age listening to this band and you are right they are a kick ass band I was lucky enough to see them live twice and after 50 years they are still kicking ass
Love your appreciation for this groovy band. I would love to see you react to Alley-Gator and Liquor - there are no music videos for those tracks, but those are a couple of gritty low-fi masterpieces.
Boyd Coddington's shop built the 32 ford and the caddy in this vid it was called "Cadzilla" was featured in Hot Rod mag.. Cadzilla was built after the 32.
I love this guy. He is an aficionado of all kinds of music and gets the simple genius of it every time. It makes me believe in this world just a little more when I watch him get off on music that I love too. He calls it “stank” “funk” but I just call it groove.
During the Eliminator / Afterburner tour in Daly City on the south end of San Francisco, and during the part where Billy is singing about seeing a naked cowgirl on his ceiling, the effects guys used a laser writer to project such a lass on the ceiling of the auditorium. That was quite a show. At the start, the stage looked like the dashboard of a late 50s car (Corvette?). At the halfway point the band walked off and the stage began a slow transformation until it resembled an instrument panel of a spacecraft. Then they came out again and started played tracks for the Afterburner album.
Went and checked your list fist I have two more of their videos suggestions for you. They weren't huge hits but hilarious videos. "TV Dinners" and "I am Your Burgerman". Btw thank you I was having a rough day but watching you enjoying one of my favorite bands and of course listening to the music lifted my spirits.
Music today would not be the same if it wasn't for black and white folks in the south that didn't give a rip about what color you were and just wanted to learn from each other's unique talents. As a southerner, it breaks my heart that so much racial tension is being pushed in this country. Together we are stronger than we can ever be divided.
Officially they’re from “Houston.” I remember that they came from Victoria, Texas (less than 100 miles from where I’m from). Been a fan since the 70s...they definitely get down & dirty. 💗
