Julian mentions the fact that the BBC reports were fair, as they should be, what he would think of the BBC today, an organisation reviled by many ordinary british people. You also hear the voice of another fine reporter, Brian Barron.

Before I could speak I was obsessed with airplanes. As a child this program only served to massively fuel my obsession, I was completely hooked and glued to every episode. The title theme is so distinctive and still sits firmly in my mind. Julian, you and this program were in part responsible for my being one of the diamonds in the sky today; I fly the 777 globally. I would give my back teeth for a follow up series studying how things have grown and changed. Thank you for the series and the book. They were a seminal documentary on the business, a huge contribution and massive influence on me.

This series utterly captivated me. The title credits and music are absolutely distinctive, and have stayed in my head ever since. I was fascinated by aviation, and always had my eyes to the sky. The series was heroin for my addiction. And now… …I’m an airline pilot flying long haul for a major flag carrier. The distinctive soundtrack still plays in my head, now at 30,000+ feet above the Atlantic. Thank you! You were an inspiration!

The series was fantastic! It had a significant impact on my aviation hobby and love for travel. Diamonds in the Sky is well known and admired by all AvGeeks who grew up in the 70s and 80s. I'd like to thank your for your excellent journalism. Well done, sir. Wishing you the best!

What a treat to have you, the original presenter, introducing from today's perspective these excellent time capsules! BBC and other broadcasters should do more of this while folks like you are still able. I have never seen this series, and look forward to watching!

Really does make you wonder what will happen when Northern Ireland becomes part of a unified Ireland. Can quite imagine the loyalist community taking up arms and this all unfolding again.

Loved watching this as a child and avid planespotter. A great documentary but a bit too sophisticated for an 8 year old, I just wanted to see more of the planes!

14:49 "Hopefully, Mozart can persuade the caller to hang on." That single narration line has helped me find out the title of that specific track. I've been looking for it forever because it's so common. Even my daughter's toy radio plays it. So I found a RU-vid video of the most common Mozart songs people can't name. And boom, there it was. "Piano Concerto No. 21 In C K467, II. Andante"

My dad was from Kingsbury as was I , he used to tell me Mickey Most was from our manor as was Charlie Watts . And when I was young and we drove through Totteridge he would say that’s Mickey Mosts house . It was big pad 👍🏻. Lovely video

Being into planes I watched this avidly. Regrettably many aviation documentaries focus a bit too much on the military side, so it was good to have a documentary devoted to the civilian side of aviation.

Every time they interview him all they do is talk about money. How much does he have and what is he going to do with it and what would he do if he lost it. It would be nice if they talk more about the music and the musicians on his label. He did incredible things with Donovan's music. And it's too bad Terry Reed didn't stay with Mickey and make more albums on epic. Either way the man was a genius and his work justifies that. 🙋

If I recall correctly, the BBC depicted Ho Chi Minh as if he was as bad as Hitler. The Americans did not learn one frigging lesson from this war apart from keeping the media out. The war was an abomination.

interesting angle on aviation for the time. I remember watching this when I was a kid. I must admit, I was hoping for more plane footage, hehe, but as an adult, it's really interesting. Now just one more tv program I need to find and see again - Derek Griffiths did a one off show. He was piloting a twin prop and the music - up up and away in my beautiful balloon!

Mr. Pettifer, It's wonderful to find you on here on RU-vid. The "Diamonds in the Sky" series was exquisite journalism. I first watched the series in 1986, on The Discovery Channel. I recorded the episodes on VHS and still watch them to this day! I wanted to thank you for your work and send you my best regards.

it has to be said that the western media did act to help undermine morale in the military and at home. The NVA could not have hoped for better assistance. I don't have a lot of respect of any of the journalists prancing around Vietnam at that time. Most of them were looking for scoop stories and a possible Pulitzer prize or BAFTA off the back of young dead american conscripts.
