This channel is dedicated to promoting HAM radio hobby, the channel is focused on the FT991A which originally to teach my dad Ron (K5EHL) how to use the radio. Dad was a HAM back in the late 1960’s around the time I was born, and radios were nothing like what Dad used in Fort Worth.
I made a couple of videos, people seem to enjoy them, so I focused on learning making videos on the FT991A and other aspects of the hobby I'm learning to help interest.
I became a HAM when the COVID started in March 2020 I started studying for my technician license, I took my test on-line through a school New England Sci Tech - the class was over zoom - later I took my General Class in September 2020 TX and recently in October 2022 I got my Extra ticket from the same local VE testing team in Abilene. I enjoy the hobby and the comradery it has in the community. It’s nice to make friends right away such as building a station, testing radios and learning about other aspects from others knowledge.
Just bought this key to compliment my Vibroplex iambic key and bug. Thanks for showing it. Probably grandma to suck eggs but the cw weight setting is for the keyer only so N/A for straight key (for the viewers really). And the 5 being sent is a 0 but if you are starting out that's some good rhythm on a straight key. 73 DE M0SAZ (Mike).
Good evening Radio Man- thanks for the message - I have had a couple folks ask the same question. To be honest I don't know the answer - but my think was when I did grounding I used copper grease on all the copper and all the connections and fittings - so I employed the same logic with the aluminum - I did the same on my CP610 and never gave me any problems. thanks maybe other folks have some comments I'm open to learning 73 appreciate it
Tnx for your great video. I got my FT-710 an try to understand meaning and use of all the buttons. Your video helps me a lot. The RF Gain is still a mystery to me. And also the Mode “Data-U”, which is not documented.. 73 de Roman HB9XBK
Thanks for sharing your findings. I just bought a CHA250HD and I have noticed that it does well on 15m, and ok on 10m. My biggest issue with my CHA250HD is the noise level. I ended up putting a G5RV Jr to compare and the noise level is close to 2S units lower on the G5RV Jr across all bands, allowing me to hear better on 40m, 20m and 10m. However, on 15m, CHA250HD signals are stronger and I can hear over the noise. I going to compare a tuned 20m vertical to the CHA250HD, and see how it compares. I would love to see a DX Commander compared to the CHA250HD, on a A-B switch. KU6Z and 73's.
Is it possible to use FLDigi and WSJTX (FT8) simultaneously with Win4Yaesu? I’m concerned that Win4Yaesu might lock the COM port, preventing other software from accessing it. Any insights would be appreciated.
I have my 250 on a homebrew mount that I mounted about 3 ft off the ground. <1.5:1 on all bands, and have made contacts world wide using 100 watts or less from central US.
Hi Ron, thanks for the message that's good stuff I'm been playing around on 3.916 a lot and 40m curious on RST's I grab some vides of some the 3.916 thanks for the update I can see can be a good portable option 73
Steve, love your videos, thank you! Still learning all the features of my FT-991a. Question on the waterfall display, with USB shouldn't the signal waterfall be to the right of the tuned frequency?!?!? Not understanding why I am tuning to the top (high) end of the displayed signal for USB. 🙂 73 KK7SBR
Good evening Mike and thanks for the message, that is a very good point I've always wondered about that too. I think may the added detail you see on other radios maybe Yaesu just decided to show us a smoke trail without the high resolution and go work it - thanks again for the message and 73 hope to work you on the air
Thank you. Excellent video. Straight to the point with a helpful demo. Two thumbs up. The FT-991A is still smarter than I am, but learning about ATT and IPO got me one step closer to mastering this rig. I put the knowledge to use tonight and had a nice QSO with a person in Catalonia, Spain from the southwest US. Between AMP1 and DNR, I was able to pull his signal out of the noise like a pro. 73.
I just got approved by my HOA to install this beautiful antenna. What spray paint would you recommend to use to camouflage it? Also, I’ll be attaching it to my Dock structure. I plan on using high tension straps
Good evening I actually don't know, there a couple of videos where I've need some guys mention non metallic paint I did a google search and didn't any specific brands, sorry I couldn't help let me know if you find something 73 and keep in touch
Hi from Mason TX. Recently licensed and I looked hard at the 991A. I ended up with a FT-710 which is serving me well. I check into the Texas 7285 net pretty regular and I'm learning digital modes. 73 KJ5GQM
I'm doing research on this as well right now. I currently have a control cable in the FT-991A TUN/LIN jack going to my tuner. I have read that you can run a Y cable off of the TUN/LIN jack. 1 cable will then run to the tuner as normal, but the 2nd cable off the Y will be modified so only pins 2 and 3 will be used for the rca or 3.5mm depending on type of tx switch you have.. Also, the switch will need to be connected between the radio and the amp since it is 100W max and you are using less than that to drive the amp or you'll blow it up after the amp.
The antenna I'm talking on in the Video is my Hustler 6-BTV with about 32 ground radials its a great antenna and priced is right 80 meters is handled with the 80 meter resonator but it is narrow banded but I have my resonator tuned right to 3916 hopefully band with get better once we got passed this solar flare activity and storms de W5SLG
Good evening and thanks for the message, I'm new to HF my new antenna CHA250HD I've been experimenting, this was my first contact outside of the Abilene TX area, I was excited that W5WHJK could hear me in Temple TX okay the FT991A has been a great radio, it wad my 1st HF/VHF-UHF-All Mode trust me you will like the 2M SSB thanks for the message 73 de KI5JUF
Thanks for the message, I've been doing a lot testing on my recent Comet CHA-250HD Multiband HF End Fed Vertical I was os excited to take to W5WHK in Temple tonight from Abilene TX now confidence is a little higher on 80m okay my friend thanks for the message hope to work you on HF, what bands do you like, 73 de KI5JUF
Question for you; I have Win4Yaesu and my laptop is connected via a USB cable to the 991A. Love it works great. I did purchase a Toroid recommended by the author of the Win4Yaesu program. On my computer COM 7 is the enhanced port, and Com 6 is the non enhanced port, I am also running Log4OM and it uses a Omnirig port Com 20. FLRig wants to use my enhanced port, which I think prevents Win4Yaesu from using it at the same time, but I am not positive of that. What has your experience been with running DigiRIG, FLDIGI and Win4Yaesu?
Really funny, I am setting up one of these next week, 🤣 I have a 30 foot tower, and I had it up 2 years ago but the wind broke it in half, I took it to a metal shop and had the tube repaired, when I reassemble it I'll have to tune it, it should be fine, if I can get it close, it will be OK because I have a roller tee tuner so I can always dial it in, AI7VS 73s good video. 👍
Hi Michael, thanks for the message, good luck I have some data from COMET showing the take off angles at 10 feet and 35 feet for 80, 40, 20, 17, 15 and 10 with the dB loss I'm putting together some information let me know if you wat to see the data sheets I'll send them to you shope02@yahoo.com okay my friend 73 hope to catch you on the air my friend
I wonder if the SWR is the same on the LMR setup and the RG setup. The .1 difference in reading is probably because the 8U has more loss. That loss appears as a lower SWR. So, your radiated power off the antenna for the 8U is perhaps lower than you think? Not by much... Not enough to matter. But interesting to consider.
Good point, lately I've used DX Engineering LMR400 50 Foot with the connectors. They seem to have good quality - thanks again for the comment something to consider 73 hope to catch you on the air
Looks like we have a lot in common. I have had the CHA-250HD installed for over 2 months and am using the FT-991A, too. The antenna is mounted to a steel pole only 6' above ground. I've been very pleased with the antenna's performance, as well. Much better than I expected. 6m -1.3 SWR / 17.7 dB loss 10m -1.07 SWR / 30.0 dB loss 12m -1.01 SWR / 43.0 dB loss 15m -1.05 SWR / 32.0 dB loss 17m -1.13 SWR / 24.0 dB loss 20m - 1.37 SWR / 16.1 dB loss 40m - 1.64 SWR / 12.0 dB loss 80m - 1.8 SWR / 10.9 dB loss KE8VEG, 73s
Good evening and thanks for the message and test results yeah for me its all new this is my first experience in the 15 through 80m I've always done 10 and 6m - Yeah I've had good RST on 80 through 17m there's a net on 3916 at 7:30 PM CST I was able to talk to folks all over Texas - okay thanks so much for the message I am very happy with the results, if you want email me shope02@yahoo.com I'll send you the data sheets with the take angles and dB loss at 10ft and 35ft for all bands I don't fully understand but I'm happy with the performance. 73 and hope to make a contact on the air !
