Yes, you are right, it has to cross over itself. But, for example if you use it for French cuffs, than both sides will evenly bend and roll and in my opninon it looks better than a classical placket. This type of placket usually doesn`t have a button in a classical way, but if you want one, you can add a loop buttonhole inside the seam. Here is the example by japanese tailors how it can be done: instagram.com/p/C-WW-3th2O0/?igsh=dXBjcTRrc3Y2dzBk I personally don`t like this way and never add a loop buttonhole, I prefer a cleaner finish.
Thank you for leaving off the background music. If I want music I can provide ny own. Music often makes it difficult to understand the presentation. I appreciate this very complete lesson on buttonholes.
Great video, very helpful! Thanks for including the instructions to iron the thread after waxing. So many people do not know to do this! Many years ago, when I was learning to sew, my mother taught me to make buttonholes for our clothes. I wish I had had your guidance back then! 🙂

I love your videos and demonstrations! If you were to publish an illustrated book I am sure to buy it! I do like it the way it is, without background music. I find background music distracting in that kind of videos.

I know, right? Shirtmaking content is usually overlooked, maybe becuase it's not as popular or 'clickable' as jackets. But I don`t care, I love shirtmaking and just trying to fill that void. 😎
I do a lot of hand sewing and have experimented with various ways to make neat button holes - doing everything from using a tiny embroidery hoop to keep the fabric stable, to cutting a guide the width of the button hole out of light weight cardboard. That method at least prevents loose threads from getting in the way. I will have to try your method. Thank you for putting up such a clear and concise video about these things.
