A little late to this video; salmon, as they make it up the river, to the bredign grounds, and breed, their bodies begin to rot while they're still alive. That's why you see all those white spots on their bodies. That first big salmon snapped at the bait, mostly out of habit, or annoyance, than hunger. At that stage, they stop eating, and will just die off in mostly shallow water, where the current is not as strong.
Hey Leif, I just wanna say that you were my inspiration to try trout fishing and bass fishing. Wasn’t really interested before but once I started watching your videos I decided to try that. Love your videos! Caught my first bass 2 days ago 😁
Leif, Thank you for these videos. I grew up fishing as a kid, but never got into trout fishing. I tried once or twice, and I never landed anything. So, I gave it up. But I always appreciated videos of people catching and cooking trout. And when I came across your videos, I thought - man, maybe I should give it another shot. But I just couldn’t get myself to for many reasons. I am now onto my 4th year as a PhD student. Things have been hard over the years in both my academic and personal lives, and it’s kept me from fishing. It’s been hard enough that I had to start seeing a therapist to overcome intense grief, anxiety, and depression from a lot of seriously unfortunate events in my life. But your videos always made me excited and smile. Your enthusiasm for what you do made/makes me happy. This year, I made it my mission to get back on the water and try to land my first-ever trout. I went last weekend, and though I caught nothing then, I was in awe of how grounding it was to be out and just present. The birds chirping, the water moving, the light rain and cool breeze… They did something to me - and I now understand why you are as passionate about being outdoors as you are. This evening, I said to myself… “you know what, it’s a beautiful and warm day.. let’s go fishing.” To my delight, I caught my first rainbow trout ever. I said a prayer for the fish, thanked it for feeding my body, mind, and soul, and I quickly dispatched it. I cleaned it per how you teach in your videos, and I’m sitting here getting ready to make some trout tacos. Thank you, Leif. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I can’t tell you how much of an inspiration your work is to me. I hope to carry on this newfound passion for the rest of my life.
My son is 7 and absolutely loves watching your videos. He checks every night for a new "mountain video" he got a bullet lure for Christmas and has been asking non stop to use it. I took him out this weekend fishing and tied it on for him. He caught 5 fish with it all on his own. He was so excited, I appreciate your videos and your wholesome respect for nature and all it provides. Thank you
Your reel is set up for right hand retrieve, so it needs to be flipped around. You would have to take out all of the line and backing and probably fix something on the inside to make it left hand retrieve. It should have come with instructions how to change it. Hope that helps! 😊
I would love to start going on trips like this. I used to fish for trout and kokanee religiously every year for about 2 decades until I started salmon and steel head fishing. I'd love to get back to the basics.
i watch your videos in a ruff time of my life..and i love em 17:28 really is a minute were i can see that you are true fisherman but pls cut the head first love your stuff keep it up i will watch every single episode !
One major challenge I see is you don't have the proper tires for this kind of outing. Here's the preparedness tip, for those wishing to go into the wilderness in their vehicle in the mud/snow don't go with standard street tires. M/T or A/T tires are designed to better handle the rougher surfaces and reduced traction. This applies even if you have 4wd. Even a properly equipped 4wd vehicle with great tires can get stuck. Here's to safe trips for everyone venturing out.
Here in Santa Fe, New Mexico, we have some preditors. We have cotoyes, bobcats, mountain lions and black bear. We also have deer. I know the deer are not harmful.
