After years of creating travel blogs: still photography & journals - I finally decided to start uploading travel vlog videos of unique and fascinating places across the United States.
Why GetMeOuttahere? When I graduated college nearly 15 years ago (2010) in the midst of the recession I was having a hard time finding full time employment and mixed feelings about what I wanted to do with my life. Living in rural Iowa at the time, I found that getting out of the house and exploring nearby state parks and county museums filled me with positivity, introduced me to fascinating people, and motivated me to be more productive in life.
I created the phrase "Get Me Outta Here" as an expression to get out of the house. You don't need to travel around the world to discover fascinating people and places, these features are all around you in your own backyard.
Perhaps some of these places will motivate you to get out of your house and explore the history and culture around you.
At 27:28 you say, "I don't think that's a pterodactyl" but right after at 27:37 while reading the display you say, "It's a pterosaur", which is correct. A Pterosaur IS a pterodactyl NOT a Dinosaur! The Daspletosaurus, years ago, was in the Grand Hallr lobby in an upright position over the Lambeosaurus. Back then it was called a Gorgosaurus.
The downstairs room has a metal ceiling with a pipe that drops water like rain on an outdoor shack, water dropping down so you could see sssssoooo cool! excellent video
Whenever I'm in the area working I'll get two canteens, a bag of sterzing's potato chips, and a chocolate malt. I've never attempted three but I'm sure I could do it.
I ate at Canteen Lunch many times when I lived in Ottumwa. Great place! Also, when you are in Ottumwa, get ice cream at Graham's Dairy Freeze on West 2nd Street.
Zoo Docent here Some zoos neuter their male lions early, in which case they would not develop their manes and would just look like female lions. That may be the case here.
Thanks for posting this. This video popped up when I was looking for info about my upcoming esophageal motility test and the 24 hour PH probe. I had the test this morning, and I am currently looking like you with the wire up my nose. I felt a bit more prepared having seen this video. I am managing the wire down my throat just fine, but I am glad to have a "stay-at-home" day. The motility test is certainly unpleasant, but I had the most supportive technician, I breathed, relaxed, and got through it quickly. For me, the hard part was getting the wire down my crazy, deviated nasal passages. I was a challenge for the technician, but she managed for both tests. I asked for lots of numbing gel!!
I used to visit the Drover. Ambiance is great. The last time was when I took my father for a Father's Day dinner. He loves the Drove's cowboy vibe. We both had the off-menu porterhouse for about $70 each. It was horrible (much gristle and cartilage). Not being complainers, we resolved to finish and leave, but when the server asked about the meal, we told the truth. Have never been back, though I drive nearby all the time. On a positive note, their baked potatoes are the best I've had, but who goes to a steak joint for a potato?
I've been to an event at the Henry doorly zoo that took place in the evening. They actually flip the lights in the kingdoms of the night section so that the animals still go through a day/night cycle.
Hi, thank you very much for your video. I really enjoy your excitement in your voice and facial expression for the trip. I am hitting the road with my two children next week. I've got a book and a map, and your video has been a good visual guide. And will use the rest of your videos as I go. Much appreciated~
I remember something about the city wanting to tear down the Canteen to build the parking garage. That woke the people up and a compromise was reached to build it over the Canteen. Probably prevented a riot. Friend took us there when we were waiting for a late Amtrak. I have since brought several people there for their first time.
@@kenvandevoort7820 I’m always amazed relics like this get threatened by mundane commercial structures. Glad this classic restaurant was saved for people to enjoy.
Arnolds Park actually had one of those spiraling toboggan coasters back in the late '90s. My adult self says the wild mouse is more painful, that being said I had a classmate that bruised his back because the vertical lift failed while on the toboggan coaster, so that may win!
Everytime I go back home to Wichita Ks, I stop for a Nu-Way. I grew up near the Nu-Way at Ridge and Central, great sandwich...sorry for going on a tangent hahahahha
Man I miss Maid-Rite. I live in California now, so I can’t get it. I remember my grandfather taking me to Canteen Lunch. My grandparents lived in Ottumwa. When we’d visit them, he’d take me there for lunch. So good!
I tubed 3 or 4 times, last time I went I saw a few snickers bars floating down the river. Between that and all the people peeing in the river I will never go again. So much pollution too, cans on the bottom, plastic bottles trash the people just don't appreciate the beauty, we are lucky to have the river. Noise pollution too, party raft on the river with 20-30 tunes tied together radio blaring loudly. If you are looking for a peaceful float watching the beautiful scenery go by, try somewhere else.
