Why do coaches make certain playcalls? Why do they call timeouts at awkward times? Why do the players do some of the things they do? On this channel, we analyze the All-22 to see what we can learn, and give historical context to key plays.
It took me 4 months to finally watch this video. I'm encouraged by Brock Purdy's game, but man oh man that O-Line... if we keep making deep runs into the playoffs, we're going to keep running into elite D-Lines and expecting Colton McKivitz to hold is is just whimsical fantasy.
gore is the most imporable rb to ever play. hbe was different he ran with sight and very high football iq. gore at the U, gore was robbed of maybe being the greatest rb of all time.....thats a big statement but whe recruited at the U he could run a 4.3, was the hardest worker(the greatest football stroy ive ever heard....willis macgee decided he was going to go train in the snow and was there early but as he arrived he saw something that caused his to doubt losing his starting job for the first time in his life as he saw frank gore running sprints in the snow butt naked but holding a fooball and in boots......he knew gore was going to destroy teams but this was before the acls), loved football moree than anything or anyone. his acl's happened ing back to back years causing his to not be able to train, after those 2 acl surgery...he ran a 4.8 his sr year and got to jmust below a 4.6 by the draft time. gore had to relearn how to play foobtall in one year....49ers drafted him several rounds ahead of where he was expected to go, now only if mike smith didnt pick with his emotions, dude picked alex smith because alex opened the door for his family the day before, which is wild considering aaron rodgers had to play against a nearly nfl defense vs usc in which he broke the record for more straight completed pass in row in ncaa histroy. also during this time the number 1 picks got paid a shit load......rodgers stated he was willing to take a very sizable contract cut to be able to spend more money to be able to build a much better team up. aaron rodgers and frank gore would have been the greatest draft for any team in history. we wouldnt have had to go through the worst pasing offense in history....rodgers was at least accurate and just like he did at berkley he could drop the ball into gores hands. there is very few people i hate in 49ers history...mike smith is one of them, the name no 49er fan is suppose to utter in kyle williams, refs in the super bowls who have no idea how to call a foul that lost us 2 fucking super bowls.... i know how frank gore was able to last so long in the nfl, when ever you watch frank gore that is about to be hit any where pas the LOS....frank gore will always lean into anyone trying to hit him. this causes 3 things, missed tackles due to your body being to high as they arent learning into him, 2. it allowed him to be one of the greatest pass blocking rbs( not including fbs) 3. it caused the contact to be much lighter on his body which allowed him to play longer in the nfl. this also allowed him to push through for a couple extra yards due to him having the leverage much more often. frank gore when looked on paper with no extext hes a very good long last rb......in reality he is the anomaly, he is frank the tank, he is the inconvenient truth, the nfl player who had a chance at being the goat tkaen away from him, one of the nfl players that you have to judge by seeing him and not reading a bunch of stats and saying all these people were better. i bet nearly almost all those ELITE rbs would have traded places with frank gore. gore is 3rd all time in rushing yards but people forget that he was one was a greaty catching rb when hes given the chance with it as he avged 8.5 yards per catch after his whole career which i dont understand how his catching wasnt used more.
Thank-you for mentioning Starr's remarkable play-faking abilities, it was one of the overlooked skills he possessed which in addition to the many others combined to make him perhaps the most mechanically sound quarterback of his era. Too, your comment that Starr's ability in this regard was "almost Peyton Manningesque" is backwards - Manning wasn't born yet so his skill should be called "Starresque". Regardless. a nice video. Cheers!
Going back to earlier season videos and watching them through for nostalgia, something popped out to me in this one. The INT at 23:40 (ish) really has me thinking that tipped passes should be their own stat and not count towards a QB's INT tally. It's technically not an interception if it's tipped first. An interception, by definition, should happen directly. The ball is thrown and caught immediately by the defender. That's an interception. But a tipped ball is more of an in-air fumble recovery than an interception, strictly by definition anyway. I think a tipped pass should be labeled TP and be a stat that's in favor of the defender, similar to the pass break up stat, and simply counts as an incomplete for the QB. It would be a more honest way to present what happened in my opinion. What do you think, Josh? I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the matter.
I agree whole heartedly, and would love to see the League move to an "Earned Interception" stat. Obviously this requires the scorer to make a determination, somewhat similar to baseball, but to some degree this already occurs in football with PFF guys charting "Drops" and the like. The only thing that gives me some pause is it might be hard to retroactively correct some stats older than 30 or 40 years old at this point. What do you think about that aspect? Would it just be a change going forward? Or perhaps a new, separate stat to be tracked along side Interceptions as they exist in their current form?
@@JoshBreakdowns Mm. Good point. It would indeed be a nightmare to retroactively correct such a stat. For the sake of logistics I think a new, separate stat would be best. A pure interception where only a single defender touches/catches the ball is an INT, even if it's a tip to oneself. The key for the ruling on the field for the sake of easily training referees on the difference would be a "single defender" gaining possession of the ball off of a passing play. A tipped pass touched by one defender but actually CAUGHT by another defender would be the new stat, likely labeled TPR (Tipped Pass Recovery), or something similar. So long as it touches at least two defenders, one initially on the tip and another on the catch and secure, it's a TPR. What do you think?
Going back to these previous season analysis videos, my heart goes out to Trey. He's a really promising prospect who's been hit really hard with bad luck. The broken ankle. The falling to 3rd string and asking to be traded, only to still end up as a third string. Then to be cut from that team. And now his future in the NFL is uncertain at best. Such a shame. I was really pulling for him to make it in the NFL and make the mark I'm sure he can make. Hopefully his luck turns around. He's a good dude, and I want to see him succeed.
Bro. Where did you get that telescope? Holy shit the biggest telescope I seen for household use. What's the name of it? I got to get one. My wife is going to kill me. Oh well.
I have found it to be a really really great telescope. Telescopes in general tend to disappoint, this one exceeded my expectations. I started with a 4" and then went up to an 8" GoTo (automatic pointing and tracking of objects). Finally I upgraded again to this bad boy: www.highpointscientific.com/sky-watcher-12-goto-collapsible-dobsonian-s11820 One thing I will point out, it is heavy. You can move it around by hand (the tube comes out of the base for that purpose) but I leave mine in and use a handcart to bring it outside etc. Views of the planets are spectacular, and bright nebula are easily visible, although mostly they won't be in color. Orion, the Dumbbell Nebula, and the Ring Nebula are top targets. Galaxies are possible depending on if you live in a dark area or not. I could *barely* see the Whirlpool Galaxy (it looked like something fuzzy in the eyepiece). That's mainly because I am just outside of Tacoma, a large bright city. Fortunately my camera could see better than I could 😁
You made it yourself? That's amazing!! Mine is a 12" f/4.9 skywatcher go-to. I do mainly planetary work but the mount is good enough here to give me a 60 second exposure, pretty much without star trails. I'm also using a planetary camera (not cooled). It was still fun to take a quick little picture though. I take it you are mainly a visual astronomer? How are your views? I could *BARELY* see something fuzzy enough to make sure I was pointed in the right place before I set up my camera (Bortle 6 skies)
@@JoshBreakdowns My 12.5" was completed in 1991, so was designed for eyeballs only. I use a 2" wide angle eyepiece (1°) and star hop from e.g. Alkaid to M51. M51 is unmistakable even at low resolution. What's the light pollution like where you live?
Dude your telescope looks like a NASA Trash Bin. Lol its massive. We got some of the borealis in MO last night as well. Pretty cool. My wife's pictures (iphone) looked better than reality.
Coming back to watch the entire season's analysis has been a treat. And to think now we have Dobbs as a backup on OUR team. He showed a lot of promise while with Arizona. So I'm excited to see what he can do as a competent backup for Brock this season. We'll see what he looks like in preseason coming up later this year. Defintiely a guy to keep an eye on.
Man, I wish I could care about football right now. Unfortunately our country is under attack and food costs 300% more than it did 4 years ago. IDK about you but We The People need to be focusing on our future right now. We are on the verge of losing our Republic and our Freedoms with it. Go do some research and VOTE TRUMP. 2024.
If yall think any game would EVER be a blowout with Patrick MAHOMES than yall don’t know Patrick. He literally scores when he needs to so I PROMISE, every time the 49ers would’ve scored than so would have Patrick MAHOMES sorry if yall don’t know this. And that doesn’t mean the Chiefs won’t lose it just mean there won’t EVER be a blowout in a big game for Patrick MAHOMES.
Bosa was held again. Nfl is joke now. NFL wants its poster child in Mahoms . I love football it's a shame what it has become. Truth does hurt but bosa was held. So Brandon makes a great play and then stops... please it's all rigid
I’ve just started watching! As a chiefs fan it’s interesting to see how other fans view these things. Tbh though, saying that this game came down to 7 key 9ers possessions is kinda like saying this game down to the 9ers possessions. Without knowing how many possessions they actually had, I know that 7 is a lot and doesn’t really put all that much emphasis on any one of them. If it were me, I’d say it came down to their last drive when they could’ve put the game away with a first down and field goal at the end. That would’ve neutralized all their offensive and special teams mistakes
The criticism of DET for going for it on two 4th downs in this game is childish ignorance. During the season, DET made the first on 3rd and 4th and 1 or 2. At the length of the field goal attempts you say they should have tried, their kicker has made 36% over the last 4 seasons. So your homework instead of just going along with the dominant narrative. That's the last time I'll be listening to you.
Awesome video! First one of yours I've ever seen. As someone older, I'm well aware of how play-calling can make the difference. But it's not sexy & most fans fail to care. McVay hiring someone to be there for those stressful times _is_ what Shanahan needs to do. He freezes when he's stressed. I have *got* to see what else you've got.
Brock is showing that he’s one of the most athletic qbs in the league and I don’t know where the slow immobile white quarterback label comes from. These morons on espn aren’t even watching the games. Brock ran the same forty time as Pat mahomes and josh Allen even at 4.75..Brock’s 10 yard split time at 1.45 is almost the same as desean Jackson’s ten yard split..
So I guess the story is: The Dolphins played poorly. The Bills played poorly. The Ravens played poorly. The Niners played poorly. And the ragamuffin Chiefs lucked their way to the Lombardi trophy. Through the four best teams in the NFL.
This was an entertaining watch as a chiefs fan lol. Most of the breakdowns I saw were more from the chiefs pov and similar to this one are about what they did or didn’t do right so it was interesting to see from the other side.
Oooohhhh I've been waiting for this. I was confident that if nothing else the Niners would make the SB a game. And, sure enough, it was a game. We pushed Mahomes to Overtime and fought a good fight. But, sadly, conservative play calling and a lack of offensive punch in the second half ensured we couldn't capitalize on our first half dominance. This one really stung. But hey, we have a lot to look forward to in the seasons to come. We have our franchise QB, and a trove of offensive and defensive weapons. My biggest concern is our right-side O Line. Trent needs REAL help over there to keep that pocket safe.
I seriously couldn't finish watching this. I absolutely hate Kyle. Dude gets in his own way time n time again in the biggest of games and the biggest of moments. He shoulders all the blame for not addressing the O line in 4 straight seasons also. Players are to blame also. Luter being clueless as to where the punt was landing is unacceptable. Burford whiffing his assignment on a 3rd and 4 in OT knocking at KC door is inexcusable. CMC fumbling on that opening drive are what nightmares are made from. But kyles play calling was ridiculous all game. He abandoned everything he's done all season that got them to the Superbowl. Why? Why do u not pound the rock and pound it some more? Eli should've gotten alot more carries and Mason should've gotten some burn too. But what ultimately lost the niners this bowl was their O line hands down. Play after play after play breaking down and failing because those plays never had enough time to develop. Kyle's system is all about execution and timing. Neither were acceptable. Entire second half is not watchable to any real niner fan. Abysmal performance, atrocious coaching, and horrific assignment whiffs. U can't do just one of those things and expect to beat a mahomes team, but to perform poorly in all those aspects spells disaster. Congratulations KC fans. Yall team deserved it and wanted it more. While i still am furious over the loss. Doubtful i get over this one anytime soon
Ugh. I feel ya. As a chiefs fan it’s been a while since we tasted your kinda misery, but your comment brought it all rushing back. We can never forget… Be well brother and your day will come. Shana ham is the next Reid, he’ll get it figured out
Great recap! Thank you for taking the time and giving an honest breakdown of such a close game in the end. It seems like you’ve gone through stages of grief, evidence from your well presented recap! Awesome product!
Why everybody keeps talking about why the 49ers lost when it was the chiefs that beat them fair and square. If you want to point out mistakes then I guarantee you you can find plenty of mistakes that could have cost the chiefs the super bowl.Anybody can be beat on any given Sunday.Leave the plays on the field.Thats old school wisdom.
Your comments are spot on (natch). Absolute missed opportunities with the run game, and missed offensive blocks were painful to watch. Agree 100% both teams looked a little sloppy, compared to the regular season. "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Albert Einstein/ Worst for me, was Kelce wide open. For pity sake, he's Patrick's go to guy! Really thought they'd win this. (sigh)
Awesome breakdown! I love watching these kinds of deep film dives. One thing I would like to mention: these Chiefs led the league in unblocked pressures in the regular season, and yet their total of 9 such pressures in the Super Bowl exceeded their season high by 2 despite missing star edge rusher Charles Omenihu (a former 49er, of course). Part of that is because the game ran an extra quarter, part is because John Feliciano went out of the game with an injury partway through, and part is because, as you mention several times, the 49ers' O-line didn't seem to be on the same page. To me that just shows how integral fundamentals in the trenches are to the outcome of a game. Bad protection hurries the quarterback, and he rushes into suboptimal decisions and sometimes costly errors.
Spagnuolo usually runs a pretty static, vanilla defense in the first drive or two to get a read on the offense. This is especially effective because offenses usually run their first fifteen to get a read on the defense, but aren't able to do that against Spagnuolo's defense well.
