When you thread baste… are there periodic knots to stabilize movement? If not wouldn’t the sandwich pucker? Please advise thank you
@ThimbleStorm
@ThimbleStorm 2 дня назад
I use anchor stitches or knots at the beginning and end of each thread. You could also add extra anchor stitches throughout if it makes you feel more comfortable. I've never had a problem with puckering because I only thread baste when I'm going to hand quilt. But I think I would have a problem with puckering and bubbles if I machine quilted my thread basted quilts.

That fabric is gorgeous what is it called and where did you get it?
@ThimbleStorm
@ThimbleStorm 18 дней назад
It's a mish-mash of fabric lines. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is the dog print and the coordinating basic. It's from the line Pips by Aneela Hoey. I recently made a scrap quilt with these fabrics. I'll leave a link if you want to check it out. That is a beautiful block. Not too simple, not too difficult. I am a person who prefers less background, so I like the first example better. I also think this block would look great without sashing, just block next to block. You would have nice secondary designs including a star where 4 blocks meet. Thanks!
@ThimbleStorm

Thank you for the ideas! I didn't even think about the secondary pattern the corners would make together without the sashing. I'm going to have to do another mockup.😊

What quilt design program do you have and how can I get it?
@ThimbleStorm
@ThimbleStorm Месяц назад
I start out by "sketching" in a program called Affinity Designer. I use the iPad version, but you can also get it for desktop. This is where I play, experiment, and refine. I can use very exact measurements and shapes that are easy to scale and move around. Then I use a program called EQ8 to calculate yardage, add borders and sashing, experiment with different block sizes, etc. I also enjoy downloading my favorite fabric lines and putting them in my designs. It's fun to play around with fabric without having to buy it. But, frankly, I'm not a huge fan of the program. It's useful, but clunky and not very intuitive to use (and it's $$$). I hope that helps.

The fat quarter folding hits all of my concerns: no raw edges, neat, could be placed in a drawer as though it was a file. The yardage folding on the other hand leaves a loose set of edges which will get bent every which way any time one pulls the fabric from the stack to try out against other fabrics. If the yardage could ultimately be folded back in on itself as the fat quarter was, I might be persuaded to give up comic boards. BTW - I use two comic boards for my yardage cuts, folding in from each end to create a book so that there are no loose edges to hang up on other fabrics or get bent all backwards. It is just a thing I have.

I'm glad you enjoyed looking through the entries. There was a lot of variety. Some paper piecing, some applique. A few traditional blocks, a few modern blocks. I think the simpler quilt mock up I did would be great for some special quilting because of all the negative space.

I had all of my yardage on comic boards. I participated in a sewing room organizing challenge and it was recommended that comic boards should be removed because horizontal rows of fabric didn’t make use of space well. I stacked my fabric vertically. I hate it. When I want to use something, I now have a disorganized stash because it’s too difficult to put it back where it was. I will probably go back to comic boards and horizontal rows. I was much more organized before the challenge. I think your method of folding could be an alternative that will be great for my smaller cuts of fabric. I’d love to see an update.

Lovely quilt. What kind of batting did you use in this quilt to make it so stiff? thanks
@ThimbleStorm
@ThimbleStorm 4 месяца назад
I used cotton/poly batting. The same batting I use for all my quilts. I think it's stiff because I glue basted and quilted the lines just over 1/2 an inch apart. Normally the glue would wash out and the quilt would loosen up, but because it's a wall quilt I'll probably never wash it.😊
