When replacing the retaining ring run your thumb over the outer edges one side is sharper from when the ring was stamped out position the ring with the sharp side out for better retention.
Good Job! I was able to buy a "virtually" new BV SE last year. Still with original tyres from '95! But now with Race King ;) It's a first-class "Mini Gravel". It will always remain in the collection :) As a teenager I always wanted a Marin, but I couldn't afford it...
I love this build video. Links to parts used would help a lot. I would also appreciate a brief description of how you reproduced the decals. Great post. Thank you 👍🏼
I bought a polished Killer V 900 in 1994. Road it cross country and down the US west coast. Still have it. It was great in San Francisco traffic. Bought my second new bike a few weeks ago. A Bad Boy Cannondale. I'm shooting to ride to at least 90. 29 years to go FTW.
Sweet bike! I've got a purple Super V 2000 w/ carbon arm that I'm restoring. FYI, you can get plastic razor blades for scraping decals that are way safer than that scary metal scraper. Great editing too.
I just installed the M3020 rear derailleur. I was just googling it and I came across this video. I too installed this on my Marin Bear Valley SE. I've gone for a 1x7 with 38T at front and a 11-32t freewheel. It's a rear hub ebike conversion so I don't go for more than 7s. Thank you for sharing your hack on this impressive rear derailleur.
That is an awesome job on your Blue 1998 Specialized FSR. Your videos are very professional and technically informative. I have a Mango 1998 Specialized FSR Comp that I purchased second hand from an older gentleman. Your restoration videos are going to help me restore my MTB. Thank you!
Ahh I actually really want the mango coloured version, I really wanted that as a teen after seeing it in a bike shop on holiday. If I come across a large mango ground control I think I’ll have to snag it!
It's definitely worth it to buy it when you find one. So far I have taken my 1998 Mango Specialized FSR comp on trails, mountains, roads, and my top speed 54 Kph downhill with no mechanical issues. The MTB frame sits high so you can see everything ahead safely and the suspension system is a 100 % awesome riding experience. I have never owned a better Specialized MTB than this one ❤.
I owned this one in this color. The harshest ride-EVER. My wrists still hurt. Worst bike I owned. Harsher than any of the road bikes I owned. Large diameter aluminum in TWO diamonds = ouch.
if u want the shifter on the breaks there are part that replace the cap on the break with a hanger on it for ur shifter . mismatch adapters from Problem Solvers.
Zero difference, they are both not great and temporary distortion prone after heavy downhill braking. That’s why they’ve been discontinued in favour for the XT/XTR 4 arm style rotors.
Great video! Very nostalgic for me. My late father bought me a 94 Saracen Sahara Elite when I was 15, I was definitely the envy of my mates! I still have the bike and hope to restomod it as it holds sentimental value to me. It will be my first time restoring it with modern components and I'm not too familiar with sizes of certain parts. Would you mind telling me what size bottom bracket was used and the chain-set and cassette for a 21 speed, I'd really appreciate it!
Hi Iffy, gosh the bike is with my Nephew now and quite a distance away from me so I can’t check. I tend to use the cheapest sram or shimano 7 speed cassettes as that all that’s available these days!
One last thing I find on the old school mountain bike market. Usually if it's a decent deal it's a super small frame. Where did all these short people come from in the 90s willing to pay a 1000 thousand bucks for a bike?
Nice! Love people saving these old V's. I just resto modded my 96 super V3000, the flat black and yellow one. I did go with the Sram GX 32 tooth cranks. I went with the Sram PG-1230 12 speed cassette that is HG mount, with the Sram GX 12 speed derailleur. I had to do some fab work to make a bracket on mine for the rear Disc brake mount, ended up with some Sram Code R's front and rear. The rear shock on mine was worn out and ended up doing the 6.5" inch rockshox monarch RL doing some modding to fit it. I also ended up making my own wheelset for it with Shimano XT hubs and Spank Spike rims, wrapped in WTB Velociraptors. I have rebuilt my Headshok a couple of times now over the years, its a Fatty Ultra with 80mm but future plans to Lefty it. Great build ya got there.
Awesome video! Just got a super v 400. Do you have links for parts list? Thinking about switching to a 1x. Do you know if there are front fork adapters to convert to disc brake?
