Ok... it's been 2 years now, so what's the verdict? You've now got the 3rd Wave and the A4 - so do you still have the Moog One and how do you see it compared to your other flagships?
The Super 5 is MAGICAL! Completely blew my plan to buy SUMMIT. And PolyBrute must be limited, given the combo of hybrid and wave tables that Summit can do; the pallet on the super 6 must be far greater, I would think. Kyra has no MAGICAL, and I’d end up committed to an asylum from tiny screen and PAGING AND PAGING
First of all, I always go to your videos when I’m considering a synth. I own an Iridium keyboard and I’m seriously considering a 3RD WAVE. Do you think there is too much overlap between the two synths, or do you think they compliment each other? And thank you for your continual gift of discovery, You are a gem.
Hi Tim. Just watched your video about how you're using the SP-404mk2 and found it very interesting and helpful. You mentioned in it that you'd be doing a separate video about how you make perfectly timed recordings. Is this video still in the pipeline for a future release as I haven't found it on your site?
Really appreciate the screen tech review. Just so happens, I'm looking at a used Quantum, Kronos and the MPC live (or keys) right now. I'm now fully informed regarding the Quantum's screen "peculiarities" and the great screens on the Kronos and MPC Live and I'm much obliged. I'm going to get all three of these babies. Thanks for "2 in 1" the video.
Tim, I wouldn't worry about this! I sure that most of us are on your playing field! I'm 74 years and I've been involved with keyboards since I first seen the Dave Clark Five around 1964! And I asked my father to get me a Vox Jaguars! His only requirement was that I take lessons which was alright with me! Any ways come 1967 and I found myself in the United States Marine Corps! When I left the Corps after serving my enlistment thins were starting to change and it wasn't long before the mini moog was on the market but was to expensive at that time which hasn't changed! I instead got involved with strings synthesizers and I'm still involved at my current age! But when we keep at it even with the fumbling that we do everything seems to work out! At my age I'm still always scheming to come up with 5he dough to by that next synth! And so my fumbling just keeps rolling along! Keep up the great work with your videos and Thanks
You said, "It's really not complicated at all." I think I've got, then I don't got it. I agree, Tim, this is a lovely setup for song generation/exploration. Puts you right in that sweet spot to springboard in to the thick of it. Ok, my head hurts now. WHAT IF, say, I wanted to buy this system. I've owned Vermona in the past, so easy to select Melodicer as THE Sequencer pick! Then the Roland MC-101. What is the little box mounted on a stand (like free-floating & tilted downward in space--looking)? Looks like a ZOOM brand. IT looks like it would be a 4 Channel Mixer. Ok, whatever it is, ADD one of those to the list. Next, the Doepfer CV to MIDI (lower box) module. Then I guess [other way around now] the MIDI to CV Converter, a la VERMONA box #2 is just that---MIDI t to CV, Conversion, right? Then,, I'd need 2 wooden cases. Power supplies?? Dunno. I'd needPatch Cables: I think Thomann would call them t THE TimPack.t WHAT is the SILVER-face Module that is left of the VERMONA CV to MIDI Converter?? I know....I already asked that question. WHAT IS the Silver-Faced Module to the LEFT OF the VERMONA CV to MIIDIin the Upper box? AND....what is that Silver Module doing?? This is a $2,000 setup, wouldn't you say? Thanks so much, Tim.
The Poly D is hard to checkout since they are nowhere to be found in Swedish music stores. Could be some issue with other huge manufacturers since the are priced so low.
"What other synths do you know that allow negative keyboard tracking" Not many, apart from (semi-) modulars and software obviously. But it doesn't end there. Keyboard tracking is also an assignable modulation source for all seperate routings plus the mod matrix. Try a sync or ringmod sound with negative keytrack on osc pitch(!). And then lfo1 speed too, modulating the filter. Really wild.
I Ask myself if thèse thinks Can make money or it IS only to use an extensive hobby. Because people don't payer for music anymore. Please, tell me if I make error. I'm presently ask myself a lot. Thanks a lot for your vodeos
Question Tim: What is the VEMONA piece (left and upright) and then the piece sitting FLAT in front of the VERMONA? My guess is that the VERMONA is a sequencer and the box (can't see the brand) in front of maybe a MIXER. Thanks.
Hi yes it's the Vermona Melodicer, I have one or two videos dedicated to that module. And in front is the mixer module from Beringer's System 100 range plus an Erica Synths effects module (Black Hole DSP 2)
Tim, I'm so happy to be able to live vicariously through you, Oh man of means. I get the impression that you work very hard to earn your money. Anyway, YOU HAVE to buy the BEHRINGER MS-5 and do a review. LESS expensive than the UB, by far. Back when I had every HARDWARD synth except the CS-80 and the JUP 8, I used to SALIVATE over the SH-5 and SH-7; I never found one....and then I sold them all. I still miss my Andromeda. Mark
The constant head moving to see display: You could make a dance move out of this, Tim....try some A-musical tracks with lots of KICK drum. What do they call that noise?? Oh yeah, RAP.
Dear Mr. Shoebridge- thanks for this (and your many other) detailed video(s). I enjoy watching your channel for the calm, measured quality you bring to your in-depth analyses and reviews, which are mercifully devoid of the “hyper” or overly flamboyant style of some other reviewers. I am a semi-pro/ semi-amateur (😂) guitar player (I.e. I perform guitar parts in a Pink Floyd tribute band) who has an old Alesis 88 key Quadrasynth; it’s a monster from the 90s, and is great, but I am looking to get either the Hydrasynth Deluxe or the UB-Xa for 21st century conveniences, even though I realize that’s a bit of a contradiction in terms for the “U-Behr-heim”. I am aware of the differences between the two, and more importantly, the important similarities (polyphonic aftertouch). I noticed that you have done reviews on both these synths. Do you have a preference for one over the other e.g. feel, quality of factory presets/ patches, or ease of ability to create “realistic sounding” instruments like pianos and organs from these synths? Any notable/ glaring shortcomings that might make you choose one over the other? I realize this question might be akin to choosing a favorite child, but the reason I ask is because, like you, I do not perform keyboards live, and am primarily looking for a SINGLE “master synth” with great patches, that I could also use as a controller for other modular devices in my studio. I live in the USA, and so am uncertain of ASM vs. Behringer’s after-sale service (if ever needed) and whether that influences your decision in any way. Sorry for the long question/ comment, and thanks in advance. Cheers
Hey. Great to hear you enjoy the channel. The hydrasynth is definitely going to give you the widest range of sounds, you can coax some very nice organ sounds, electric pianos and even choir sounds out of it. The synth engine is very flexible allowing you to build your own wavetables from the factory waveforms provided. Working with digital synths is not for everyone, and I guess the question for you is how important is that warm, analogue, imprecise quality? Because it is that quality that you get from an analogue polysynth like the UBXA. If I was pushed, I think I would go with the hydrasynth for its flexibility, but I do think that pairing it with an all analogue polysynth is an amazing combination.
I'm a drummer from the 60's. Percussionist from the 70's. Music theory, music literature, and music performance in the 80's. Fast forward to today. I play flute, guitar, and a bunch of keyboard instruments and the Mellotron M4000D is my go to instrument. I have 3 octaves to play and with the low mode I have 6 octaves. With the limited 37 key keyboard I've gotten very good at reverse chords. I can make the Mellotron sing and make angels cry with it's beautiful sounds. I got with Marcus and bought sound cards 02-03-04-05-06 and my musical super powers are now unlimited. This instrument is a gem. I'm going to try to get Marcus to make an 88 key Mellotron M4000D1. How awesome that would be. I wouldn't care how much it would cost.........it would be the bomb.
Great review. With regards to being unhappy about the price; synths have always been expensive. If you'd have bought a brand new Jupiter 8 or Prophet 5 or CS80 it would've cost a fortune back then. It was only really the DX7 that brought prices down. If you want one but complain about the price then you're not going to buy one anyway...
This is what came as my System 55: 1x 914 FIXED FILTER BANK 1x 923 FILTERS 1x 904B VOLTAGE CONTROLLED HIGH PASS FILTER 1x 904A VOLTAGE CONTROLLED LOW PASS FILTER 1x 992 CONTROL VOLTAGES 5x 902 VOLTAGE CONTROLLED AMPLIFIER 4x 911 ENVELOPE GENERATORS 1x 911A DUAL TRIGGER DELAY 2x 921A OSCILLATOR DRIVER 6x 921B VCO 1x 921 VCO 1x 960 SEQUENTIAL CONTROLLER 1x CM1A MIDI to CV converter 3x CP3A-O module 3x CP3A-M 4 input mixer 2x 995 ATTENUATORS 1x 903A RANDOM SIGNAL GENERATOR 1x CP35 ATTENUATORS 1x 961 INTERFACE 1x 962 SEQUENTIAL SWITCH 1x BP28, 2x BP56 and 2x BP2 blanks panels for a total of 144HP expansion space 1x CM1A MIDI-to-CV converter 2x EURORACK GO cases including PSUs 2x EURORACK GO BRACKETS to link the 2 EURORACK GO cases together for easy patching I feel i need to get at least one more 904A LP Filter, 2 more 921 VCO, 2 x 994 multipliers... Apart from this I selected a few modules on the Sweetwater website : Behringer Chaos Analog Random Sampler Eurorack Module Behringer 2600-VCO Eurorack Voltage-controlled Oscillator Module Behringer Radar Eurorack Module Behringer 150 Ring Mod / Noise / S&H / LFO Eurorack Module I wonder if any of these make any sense... Your advice is going to be immensely helpful...
this System 55 that you have and the one i got a week ago have different modules. for example i have only one VC Low Pass Filter. And i dont have a Multiplier. Have you changed what Behringer provides as their 'standard' System 55? Many thanks for your videos. They are nice.
@@TimShoebridge this is wonderful, such a prompt reply... I am just beginning with modular synths, and really have just begiun with synths in general. (inspired by Hans Zimmer in Dune!) I am as of now struggling to get meaningful sounds out of the System 55. But i am not giving up. I start every time with a fresh patch and stop somewhere when i think i have hit a brickwall. And then RTZ return to zero and on again... I am a resilient guy at 54, always ready to learn and never idle... Professionally have been a sound engineer for moving image and now an audio tech consultant... Many thanks for your videos. I really appreciate the time and effort you have taken, because i know what it takes to make such videos. Warmest regards from Bombay, India... Be well!
As some folk on reddit have quite rightly said... if the Behringer mults module is powered then why is the output sockets passive? seems a waste of power for just a few gates.
Thank you very very much Tim ! i really like the way you create music. You give me inspiration. God bless you. I just bought the Typhon and i'm sure it's the right choice😊 I keep on learning with your videos.
Hey Tim! Question for you. Is there really a difference between running four oscillators into a module with four filters which are controlled all together, or instead running four oscillators into a mixer and then into a single filter?
You will want the four filters if you are applying envelopes to filter cutoff and playing polyphonically up to four notes at the same time, or if you want to pan each oscillator separately in the stereo field. But otherwise no, a single filter will work just fine.
@TimShoebridge Thank you for the good answer? And is 4 voices the max you can control with a single MIDI keyboard in the Eurorack system? You could obviously get more oscillators, filters, etc., but I havent seen any MIDI to CV converters that output more than 4 channels
The difference between Art and AI for me is : an artist explores without knowing what he will discover. AI is searching what already exists and acts like a dream, asleep, reassembling a wide range of information into a an optimised quantity of memory. An artist is acting like an astronaut, bouncing from planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy...discovering a wide range of information/seeds he has a hard time turning into a final master piece. May be only one in a life time...
Superb video on the beast , that said i'm struglling to find a video that demonstrates its cappacity to be a VA , and do convincing analog synth classic sounds , all i hear is Virus / nord type of pads and , airy stuff , witch are beautyfull , illustrate the power of the engine , but can it moog ? jupiter ? Oberhiem quite a bit ?
That's it, I am fully GAS-lit and this video made it worse. This synth seems to be checking all the boxes for a new bass synth I was looking for. Heck, it's my birthday in two days. Price dropped to €400,- I... can't... resist... anymore...! Thanks a lot. Just placed the order 😅
I can’t really vibe with the lack of 8x8 patch selector. I want to be flying around on that sort of thing… Because that’s the best way to get live sounds
I was dealing this afternoon with the Jupiter 50 layers menu😮.... Not fully Analogic, but began complicated. I discovered that the sound was affected by previous modified settings, this becomes Engineering things, not music.
Some of those gargantuan Yamaha organ-synths had knee levers as well as all the other bells and whistles. Without having researched it, I assumed they were for pitchbend on the top keyboard. In the light of what Osmose and MPE brings now, it would be interesting to see what that lever was originally for.
Thank you for a great insightful video . I have just got mine and my oh my - packs a punch and is very addictive . it's taken over from much of other hardware . 😎
The Peak has surprisingly deep bass , only slightly edged out by Moogy Booger. I'm very curious how Virus TI2 would have held up on this overall test -- Just ordered one, despite never hearing any Virus synth outside of youtube. This video was has indeed helped me decide on my next purchase: B-Moog Is up there on top of my list now -- the one and only bass synth I'll ever need... (followed by Dread nymph for dreamy lead/pad.) ..
