After 44 years of service to the Army, I retired in June 2021 and began living for myself and my family. I started this channel as a way to let my dad see some of the things we're doing. Mom and dad are not able to come visit me out east anymore so this is the best way for us to stay connected. But, I'm also trying to make sure that my videos will be of interest to others. I don't think I'm unusual, I think I'm like most guys who want to do something outdoors, do some travel, and keep the mind fresh with creative pursuits.
This isn't a purely fishing channel, or a purely travel channel, or a purely creative channel. I'm breaking the first RU-vidr rule and not targeting a specific niche. I know that means that not everyone will be into everything I post. I hope that's okay with you, if I travel and you're not into travel, then just wait for the fishing ones. If you're not into fishing, then skip them and watch the travel videos.
Hi, thank you. I was so surprised and pleased to discover that the Kon Tiki museum was there and it is so well done. Great memories of reading the book as a kid and imagining the adventure. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Hi, thank you. Yep, I messed that up. Since then I’ve seen real manta rays and the difference is huge. I wish I could change the video but short of taking it down and releasing it as a new video I’m just going to live with it. I will change the notes to make it clear there. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi, thanks. I’m glad it helps. I figured that if I had questions after doing a decent amount of research, then others probably do as well. Thanks for the feedback, take care.
This is Awesome. I am just beginning my kayak journey in the bay and this gives me much more confidence about getting out of the Severn and south rivers and fish the bridge
Well, DNA sequencing and analysis didn’t exist in 1947. It does now, and it supports pre columbian contact between Polynesia and South America. Plus, I enjoy the sweet potato evidence.
Hi, nope I haven’t made it down there yet. Have you? I’ve heard good things about that area, maybe I will try it soon. Well, as soon as it cools off a bit.
@@EnjoyingRetirement I like fishing there. I normally paddle across Whitehall Bay to get to it, but I'd like to take my son and I would likely be towing him behind me on his 6.5' kayak. I figured maybe if I hug the shoreline coming down from SPSP it won't be rough on a day with low winds.
I’ve had good luck paddling down the side from Sandy Point. I haven’t gone that far down, but there’s a nice small bay followed by a beautiful sandy beach. Have fun and best wishes.
Thank you so much for your educational video! I'm heading there for a trip of a lifetime in a couple of weeks. Do you have any advice regarding equipment for a beginner snorkeler?
Hi, thank you. If you’re going to be renting snorkel gear I recommend that you take some time to make sure the mask fits properly. While in the shop, without putting the straps over your head, put the mask in place and suck in a tiny bit through your nose. The mask should snug up to your face and stay in place without any air leaks. If you need to try a couple different ones till one fits. For the fins, I recommend wearing a pair of short socks with them. That will keep them from rubbing your skin on a long snorkel. Finally either pick up a small bottle of defogger for the mask, or use some saliva and rub it around the inside of each mask lens just before you go in. Then rinse it out with the ocean water. That will help keep it from fogging up. Finally, I just suggest making sure the current or waves aren’t too much for your abilities and then relax and have fun. If you’re going to be buying gear I recommend going to a professional dive shop, they are all over the keys. In Key West my favorite is Divers Supply. A professional shop will have a large selection, help you fit the gear and make sure that you get the right equipment. Have a great trip!
Just got back and we had a blast. What a beautiful location! We took your advice and made sure that our masks fit properly and has defogger on hand. Thank you so so much! Your video was so helpful.
Hi, that's what it was for where we were when we went. I didn't check the regs, just went with what my neighbor said as well as the captain of the charter. Rockfish was limited to 3 and even fewer for the orange ones.
Hi, thank you. Yep, nothing beats years of local knowledge, but it sure is fun trying to build up our own over time. It’s tough when it’s a place you only go to a couple times a year. Thanks again, take care.
Hi, thank you very much. I'm back in the keys fishing this week. I hope you take an opportunity to get on the Yankee Freedom. Make sure to stand on the bow and enjoy the breeze.
Heading there in June via the Yankee Freedom, so this is a nice preview--thanks! Seemed like most of the coral is already bleached, but that's happening everywhere.
Hi, you're welcome. Thanks for watching. I hope the coral fares better this year. I did see some recover in Ft Lauderdale between last summer and this January. Have fun.
We just finished up fishing in Homer. We are taking home 3 - 50# boxes of fish. Just wanted to say Thank You for helping us understand how to get fish home by checking the luggage. A guy fishing with us paid over $1,000 to ship home 131 pounds. Yikes!
Hi, thank you. That is a very nice comment, I appreciate it. I’m too old to toss in hype and glitz, so I will just stick with useful information and hope it’s appreciated.
... the "organ" is a local that lives over on the Chester River ... I heard him practicing a many of Saturday Afternoon ... Oh, that beach is actually in "Gratitude" on the bay ... not much difference still the same town ...
Hi. The turning radius is a bit wide, but I’ve had no problem with turning in either direction. Also, with the curve of the kayak and mounting location I’ve had no issues with prop contact either no matter how far I turn the motor. Running straight is no problem at all. It’s no speed demon, but it gets the job done.
I really don’t know, in theory it should. But I think the bigger issue for a bow mount would be how to do it on this type of kayak. The bow curves upward. I think it would be difficult to put a stable mount up there and the increased height, along with wave action in the front, might make it difficult to keep the motor head in the water full time. I just take some extra care on my turns, and keep a paddle handy if I need to get out of a tight space.
@@EnjoyingRetirement yeah I didn’t think about the kayak height when it hits waves. But mine is inflatable and I can either move it the front or the back since the mount is universal. I’ll give both a shot and see what results I get. For the most part, I’ll be in calm-ish waters.
Hi, thank you. My first attempt at spearfishing for mangrove snappers with it ended with great embarrassment. I will put the link below. I’m headed back to the Keys next month and have a day planned for trying again. I hope to have a much better video from that one, so stay tuned. Also, I made three other videos showing the complete build process on my next gun if you wanted to see them. Here’s the link to my embarrassment :) Lost in the mangroves! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e1pEzPxFEYU.html
@scdive I wanted to let you know I have a new video up of me using a 40” version of the gun that I made for myself while Spearfishing for mangrove snappers. It worked like a charm. Here’s a link to that video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e2vswCJv7E8.htmlsi=ZVn9LcmcAvAjwtrf
I really like this video and the commentary - it's great for first timers. I live in AK (Juneau) and would say that this charter experience, while good, is a bit atypical. Most charter boats out of Seward and Homer have dedicated heads (toilets) that aren't exposed like this one. I would also say it's odd to fish from a landing craft. There's nothing wrong with it, but most people that book charters will board what we call a "walk around" from the docks. Generally, depending on your charter, you can expect that a lot of "chickens" will be harvested and a couple of patrons will get lucky and get a fish that's in the 40lb to 70lb range. "Barn doors" are relatively rare on commercial charters as they are trying to get everyone some fish. As far as licenses go, most charters CAN sell them to you the day you go out. He is correct in that they are generally not included in the price though. These halibut fillet out at about 50% so and it's not rare to have local ladies hanging around to grab the rest. Again, this is a great video for first time AK fisherman and I love that he addresses the issues that most videos don't (packaging/shipping/etc.). Nicely done!
Hi, thank you for the great comments. I appreciate getting a locals take on it and I’m very happy that you enjoyed it. It’s good to hear that most boats have a full head. I had the option of two boats with Millers and chose the 6 person one instead of the larger boat. That’s probably why we had the smaller boat with ‘a great view’. I’m surprised that more folks haven’t covered the processing and shipping. Before I catch or kill anything, knowing how I’m going to clean, preserve and transport the meat is must know information for me. Thanks again for the kind and helpful comments. Ted
YUP, I didn't even realize it, but suddenly it hit me… I was actually letting it flow after the movies, my best guess is that when I go'ogled Beck Reznark's guide and read it, something changed inside me. Can’t quite explain it, it’s been months, I can’t believe I even had paruresis to begin with.
This goes to show how much I don't know about Hawaii. When I saw the video title I thought I was going to click on a snorkeling how-to guide that was two steps long... Which I must admit I was wondering that was going to work 😁😂😂😂
2 step snorkel guide: Insert tube, breath thru mouth. There you go, a freebie lesson :) Yep, this isn't a commonly known area outside the Big Island and you have to hear about it from someone before you think of looking it up. But it is aptly named thanks to the entry point. You could scramble up other areas, but with all that lava rock and surge it's pretty easy to get pushed into positions you'd rather not be in. I think simply calling it Honaunau Bay would be prettier. Still waiting for it to warm up here in Maryland. Take care.
So Senor Frog cooked your catch? What was the fee? I was thinking of doing some fishing when I head there this summer but i did not know what to do with the catch.
Hi, I recall that it was about $40. We called before hand and spoke to the manager and she lined it up. On a previous trip we had the Margaritaville restaurant cook the fish and they were cheaper and much better. Look up my 8 hour Nassau charter fishing video and you can see that area. I took a small cooler with me and had my hotel put the fish in their freezer for the night and then checked the cooler. Btw, Senor Frogs is just outside the cruise terminal and if there’s a ship in it will be very loud. Margaritaville Restaurant on Paradise Island was just much better, and right where we caught our charter. So we went from boat to dinner in about 5 minutes. Have fun.
Hi, I believe the water is generally about 8 feet. Swimming around the whole moat might be a bit much for young folks unless they are used to the water. But there’s a couple places, such as the pilings, where they could go without too far of a swim.
Hi John, I hope you get there, it’s beautiful. Just enough of an adventure to make you feel like you accomplished something special. I hope all is well, still waiting for it to warm up here in Maryland so we can get back out on the bay.
Most important EVEN if fishing isnt want you expected is a TIP!!! Especially if the boat uses a deckhand helper. Think of it like a restaurant 15-20%. This isnt a high paying job as lots of expenses to take you fishing! If you plan a fishing trip just remember the tip each day you fish with a guide! PRO TIP 100$ a day per person will make the captain and deckhand want you back time and time again and will go out of there way above and beyond to make it a great trip for you!
