Welcome to my channel! I'm truly so grateful that you're here :)
I chat a ton about my realistic journey through jiu jitsu and show little bits on doing my best to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Thanks for coming along for the ride!
What is the biggest difference if you’re used to only training with male partners and you sign up for your first competition? I’m a blue belt female, I’ve never competed before and I don’t have any training partners with the same level as me and size/weight… I’m curious if it will be harder going against a female with the same build as me compared to me being used to going against the guys and doing good with them, girls are more flexible and they grapple differently. I have been googling and YouTubing videos all morning today and there is not a single video anywhere on the internet answering this question😭 I just really want to know what to expect going from male training partners to a female competitor in a competition, harder, easier ? I have no clue what to expect lol
@@kimberlykinchdo you feel any pain or any limitations after 2 years? I’m going into surgery in a week, still unsure if I should commit to surgery or not, all 3 tendons are torn off the hip bone at 7.8 cm. Couldn’t walk or straiten my leg for 3 days after injury bad bruising But after a month I don’t have much pain other then when I try to run and stride it out, and taking my boots off is a very weird uncomfortable feeling. If it’s gonna be stuck like that forever then I really need the surgery. But if you got the surgery and have no pains or weird feelings after 2 years the surgery might be worth it? I’m so back and forth right now, in my head Thank you!
When people tried to correct your "axed" instead of asked comment you pretty much brushed them off. So lets say if you see someone doing a technique incorrectly would you just brush it off or try and help them get it right? That all people are trying to do with axed.
Ok... Wow! This was a good video. But there's a bunch of stuff that I disagree with--but that's probably because it's a gender and personality clash. I'm a guy, and I love talking during my rolls (mainly getting feedback from the higher belts). Also, if I curse, I aint cursing at my partner but at my own incompetence. But women....oh women.... they do take it personally or get upset. Note to self: don't cuss when rolling with women. Also, I think we need to communicate before the roll if we should talk during it or only after it.
It's good to hear from a woman about the concerns of rolling with a man. I'm 48 years old, man, and began BJJ 3 months ago. My major concern with asking women is the same issue raised by the guy that Kimberly quoted. In our context, men have to be careful so that they don't come across as creepy or that they are trying to hit on the women in the gym. Though I think it's also true that I'm far more comfortable going harder on the men than on the women who are much smaller. I'm not a big guy (5'8'' and 200 pounds, more fat than muscle), but most of the women are a lot smaller. A couple of them have tapped me out (and I'm fine with that), but I try to put more emphasis on skill than on brute strength or my body weight. But if women are shy, then I should go out and ask them to roll with me--especially if they are blue belts or higher. I'm wary of rolling with the white belts because neither of us (I'm a white belt too) know what we are doing.
It is an excellent video but be aware of the risks also. I had the same surgery 3 weeks after injury. My surgeon hugely exaggerated his experience. He said he’d done 125 ops, but didn’t mention that he’d only done 2 solo. Make sure you get a great surgeon. Surgery for me was the worst decision - I have been left disabled, it has destroyed everything in my life, I can’t even kick a football with my young boys. Just make sure you get the right surgeon. I had the op, then dvt as I was given no thinners after. Then PE 50/50 for 5 days, huge heamatoma (20cm x 10cm x 9cm), then found out that the surgeon damaged my nerves, resulting in my middle hamstring dieing. Then the other hamstrings came loose and one attached to the sciatic nerve. The result is I can barely walk, in pain at all times. How I wish I’d just left my body to heal naturally - recent studies seem to show the same outcomes after a year so really consider the conservative route would be my advice.
I started training this January 2024. June 2024, the coach had promotions and he promoted a guy that had been going for only 10 days at the same time he promoted me that had been going for 4 1/2 months. Now we are the same rank. The guy going for 10 days got 3 stripes and I did, too. How sexist is that? 😪
Just Curious! Is Jiu-jitsu a competitive submissive sport with tournaments? I think that I'd be very uncomfortable being in close contact, rolling around with a female and would definitely feel so extremely embarrassed and ashamed being beaten by an experienced girl in a competition, especially in front of a crowd.
Tore all three hamstrings from the pelvis and had 5.5cm retraction (with a few fibers still attached) on one and the other two with 1.8cm retraction. This happened in late June and I'm trying to get a surgery date ASAP. Met a consulting surgeon and he could not decide if I needed surgery or not because when I saw him in mid July, I was no longer in any severe/chronic pain and I could walk normally again. So he referred me to one that is pretty familiar with the injury. Met with that guy a week ago (mid-August by this point) and he flat out told me he didn't think I'd need surgery and I could manage, but still offered it. I'm 30 and I rock climb, ski, hike, participate in ultramarathons, etc. I thought he was out of his mind. Now I'm (impatiently) waiting to see his colleague. He said at this stage, like 7 weeks out from the injury, the surgery is a bit tougher and the recovery is worse. I know I present well but I'm super concerned for my long term prospects. Like you, I was in denial about the severity of my injury. I remember the feeling of dread when I read my MRI, but even then I was still trying to convince myself I didn't need surgery. Now I'm just fully committed to getting it so I don't have to worry about the quality of repair my body does. The human body is amazing at what it does to heal itself, but I do not want to roll the dice on my future. Thanks for posting these videos, super helpful for me, the lack of available information is dumbfounding.
I'm sorry you're dealing with doctors that aren't super helpful! This injury is tough and finding any information about it is even tougher. I completely agree - our body is amazing at healing itself, but I didn't want to take a chance on the future of my athletic ability. I hope that you find a surgeon soon that you feel comfortable with!
I'm a male 5th ku in Aikido and have no problems training with female partners as it's not close up and personal. Don't know much about BJJ. I would never get aggressive or ever try try to harm a female in any way. My only concern is that I might become sexually aroused and feel so ashamed and embarrassed being in close contact, rolling around with someone of the opposite sex. Don't know if you have ever experienced this and what can I do about it? If I were to try BJJ, I was thinking it might be a good idea to wear a cup or supporter so it won't show so much!
I've never experienced this happening to any males that I've rolled with. When I've asked my husband about this topic in the past, he says his thoughts in jiu jitsu are so far away from anything sexual, so rolling with women has never been an issue. As far as a cup goes, I actually don't think it's recommended or that you should even be wearing one - not 100% though.
@kimberlykinch Thanks! Also I didn't know if striking, hitting or attacking the groin is allowed in BJJ, though I'm sure it can happen and contact can be made. In Aikido we don't do that and are trained to protect that area at all times. Maybe I should just wear protection anyway in a Martial Arts sport like BJJ, when in physical contact with other opponents, however I don't want to restrict my manuverability!
You said having a dj on both wedding videos corny. I think having a live person via band or dj at a wedding makes a huge part in ppl having fun in the reception. I think having a playlist at a wedding is corny but that's why wedding's should be personalized. Gotta do what works or make sense
Thanks for this video. I am in a gym where a handful of ladies roll every Thursday night, so it has been helpful watching posts like these to better understand training challenges from their points of view. One piece of advice, if you don't mind...no one should think that being smaller is a drawback for their training partners. So much of BJJ is like threading the needle. When rolling with somone smaller, it forces one to be more precise with their movement, placement, and techniques!
Let me say this, me, male, 39 as of yesterday, super athletic when it comes to jiu jitsu, I am actually focused on removing strength and agility for a while to work on other areas, a year and a month in jits literally 6-7 days a week that whole time. I have a 3 strip white belt right now. I have a friend she is 23 and she has done jits a month or so longer than I have, she has a wrestling background and teaches the high school wrestling as an assistant. She just got her blue belt. I think I have learned a couple things more and understand some concepts, however everything is pretty loose and not dialed in, she is maybe more dialed in with her wrestling things. I can compete at a many times higher level but she isn’t to bad but her technique has for her some golds and medals at come. I am frustrated I’m not blue yet but I understand as well.
roll with women however u want to. you dont need to follow any guidelines by a narcissisti c feminist. if you wanna crush them do so, if u wanna go as hard as u can, do so. if u wanna go soft, do so. do what you like. it's a mans sport, not a delusiona l feminist s one.
you're delusional. the guy who had the "opinion" is 100% correct about toxic females in bjj gyms. they are exactly as he described. they are also super catty behind the scenes and frankly dont even belong in bjj gyms.
It’s so helpful to hear this. I’m 6’1” and a 225 lb meathead. I roll with women and feel like they trust me even though I am new. I will try what you suggest
I'm small, weak and have no aggressive bone in my body but I figured I'm just there to have fun 😂. As long as my partners are not going at 100% (I don't want to die) I'm pretty happy to take it easy and learn the techniques.
Did you have a full tear? I only have one detached tendon and my surgery is scheduled for a month from now. Just trying to make a recovery comparison. Thanks!
Hi! Fully back to training jiu jitsu and I don’t feel any limitations physically! I can still “feel” the surgery site sometimes but overall I don’t have any issues :)
Hello, I am 3 weeks out of Proximal Hamstring Repair. I thought I was doing well. Now the incision scar is super tender, and swells periodically. Is this something you experienced. I am walking with a cane. I am not an athlete, and I am 74 But, I am a very active 74 year old female, RN still working. Advice is appreciated. July 20, 2024 3:15 PM. est.
Thank you so much for sharing! I’m booked in for surgery for the same injury on Tuesday BUT also feeling like you were a week after your injury, I’m able to put weight on my leg, walk and am a little bit more mobile now doing day to day things so I’m doubting whether surgery is actually necessary! 😬 did your surgeon tell you if this is normal to feel like this a week post injury? 🤦🏽♀️ thanks again for sharing all of your content around this injury/surgery/recovery! There really isn’t much out there!
@@TeegsKate777 hi! So sorry you’re going through this injury. Yes I spoke with my doctor when I was feeling like that and he said it’s likely because scar tissue is starting to form, so that’s what was giving me the mobility again. Almost 2 years post op now and very happy I did the surgery!
@@kimberlykinchwow our bodies are insane. So positive to hear you are glad you went through with the surgery. Gives me hope I am doing the right thing especially with a strong desire to return to sport/exercise to the level I was pre-injury! You’re my inspo for the recovery journey ahead! Thank you 🙌🏼
@@TeegsKate777 I truly hope all goes well for you and that you're able to return to all of your activities! If you have any questions about anything, don't hesitate to reach out :)
Wow! This was SO helpful. Yesterday, I did RDLs without any lower back discomfort/pain for the first time EVER, thanks to your video. I used to use a weight lifting belt for support and I didn't even need one🥺. The anterior pelvic tilt was definitely my problem. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
Very good video, but please control volume of sound effects and music because they are much louder than your voice. When using earphones it’s very loud almost shocking and hurting and when viewing on tv it can annoy other people in the room or even neighbors (apartment) because of music with heavy bass.
Coming from a Kendo background where I could always train with another woman, I am finding that difficult to adjust to so far-- but I think I have high hopes for my new training & I'm excited for new beginnings!
