Howdy folks - Welcome to DO & BREW! My channel is about all things home improvement & repair, woodworking projects & craft beer reviews! I am new to RU-vid as of April 2016 and I am having fun sharing my knowledge of 25+ years of home improvement and furniture building. My ultimate goal is to build a large Butt & Pass log home completely by hand, the old fashion way - no kit build for me!
I started this channel because I always use RU-vid as a resource before starting a project. While planning to build my "mini-mudroom", I was surprised that there were no videos to help me get started. So I made my first videos during my mudroom build - yes, those are a bit rough, but the learning curve on recording/editing is a steep one. I think my latest videos have come a long way. But I am no Steven Spielberg, but the content will carry it!
Welcome to all my subscribers! If you have any home improvement questions or questions, please ask, I am happy to help any way I can!
THANK YOU for the great video. QUESTION: I want to cover a BRICK FIREPLACE that has been whitewashed. What mortar do you recommend, or do I need to use an adhesive? THANKS
Hi Drew, just caught you video of installing the backsplash. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bMyvPtjzjd8.html Did you have to put some sealant behind the sink before you laid down the tile? Thanks...
Yep - you sure do. But I haven’t gotten to that stage of the project yet. Don’t have to install those at this point, but they do get installed before insulation and drywall. Keep watching….
Don’t understand your question…the joists are 16” on center and I used 4’W x 8’L plywood. ***I did NOT use OSB (Oriented Strand Board) … I used plywood - big difference.
I noticed you started your brick at the top of the fireplace line. You came back a few weeks later and started from the bottom up and came out exactly right under your mantle with a perfect fit. How did you figure that? I would have thought you would start at the base first and work up to the mantle. Just asking as I am about to start my project? Thanks
You did work to perfection. As a girl, I just wanted to see the complete finish look with paint visually. Just seeing the entire project at a glance would have been nice to see it all completed with paint. I would have enjoyed looking at the entire beautiful frame around the door and molding. Thank you for your detailed work.❤❤❤❤❤
Howdy Samantha! So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the great comment! If you’d like to, you can see the finished product on my door surround build video at: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hNMhGT2TLUY.htmlsi=IkcmVb389oXyd0xy It is a two part series. Hope you enjoy those videos too and let me know if you have any questions. Good luck! 🍀
Dagnabit! Those videos don’t show the final product…sorry! You can see a final painted door surround on this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FEWBYZ55QXk.htmlsi=BihyFs1Hx13ljSC3 Thanks again for checking out the channel.
Thank you for the video, you have a new subscriber. I bought my Werner scaffold in Australia on sale some three years ago and only now have made the effort to use it! Your video makes it so much easier to understand the assembly. Now there’s no excuse to do the many little house jobs … I’ll start with finally pruning my 5 metre high giant bird of paradise in the garden! 😉
Thanks for the great comment! You do not have to use any construction adhesive. I like to use it to prevent the moldings from moving - even slightly. If your moldings/trim work moves, breaks / gaps in the paint show up and that drives me nuts! Good luck with your project. Go Dawgs! Alpha ‘90. ☘️
They are self adhesive clear dots…mostly used to quiet cabinet doors. Howdy Catphillips! Thanks for checking out the video. You could use cPVC for your hot water pipe, but I prefer PEX - which works for hot and cold. PEX is also available in red and blue so it’s easier to keep your hot and cold water lines recognizable when/if a future repair is needed. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck with your project! ☘️
Maybe because I live in California where it is literally impossible to buy a house for under $1M, I tell people "You have a $3M house, why care about spending an extra $100 on plumbing parts. So, we ALWAYS stub out to 1/2" male threads and put a cap on, then after drywall and paint replace the cap with an angle value. On toilets always install anti water hammer air chamber.
Mines is acting funny won't start up at all an for awhile there it started on but couldn't turn off without cutting water off . When I hook up the power it blinks blue I changed the batteries 3 times so it's not the batteries
I'm looking into a type of caulking (like Sticky Stone) which can be used in place of the mortar. It would just be nice to eliminate the mixing mess and just use a caulking gun to apply the glue. I'm going to experiment with a couple pieces and see how well it actually holds before starting my fireplace project.
Hi Mike, Starting from the bottom up - (all measurements in inches) The casing or jam is 3/4 thick x 4.5 wide x 81.25 tall The bead board / entablature base is 1/4 thick x 1.5 wide x 42.25 long The freize is 3/4 thick x 4.5 wide x 41 and 11/16 long (this should be the same measurement as the outside width of your casing) The cornice is 5/4 thick x 3.5 wide x 47 long. The crown modeling is cut to fit under your cornice board These dimensions are for a 32 wide door. If your door opening is different you will have to adjust the widths of your boards. Thanks for the question - let me know if you have more questions - happy to help! Good luck and please post a picture of your finished door surround! ☘️
Howdy ratipati! Good question…I decided to not do returns because I knew I would be painting this surround. If I was going to stain and finish it, I would have done returns. Thanks for checking out the video…good luck on your project! ☘️
Thanks, I’m an idiot, must of fast forwarded past that, assuming the sealant was applied at the end. I think your way is way better, now that mine are up it would’ve been way easier to clean and seal at the beginning of the project!!! Thanks for the video
Thanks for checking out the video! All of the wood used for this surround is clear pine. Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck with your project! ☘️
