I’m an early morning seminary teacher--there is no amount of money that would make me want this calling… therefore it has to be a labor of love for the Lord.

I don't think so. Not here in the Midwest where you maybe have a dozen kids for less than an hour a day and, in my experience, it's frequently 2 of the parents or grandparents of a a notable fraction of the kids doing it.

There are many full time employees for the church and they have church callings as well, just like other members. Full time seminary teachers are church employees and have callings as well. Seminary callings are not the same as being a full time seminary teacher. I had a seminary calling for 4 years and yes, it was very demanding but many church callings are. The church pays church employees because it’s their job, the church doesn’t pay members for their callings because callings are volunteer service.

As an early morning seminary teacher, I would love to get paid! 😂 There actually is training available online for all seminary teachers. I’ve done it. It’s obviously not required, but it’s available. My husband is the bishop and I would say that we probably spend a pretty similar amount of time on our callings.

God bless you for your service. Half a day for a 45-50 minute lesson? I worry for our early morning teacher training from their Coordinators on helping them to use the curriculum, limit prep time so to not overwhelm.

To my understanding - CES hires seminary teachers in Arizona where i live. We had 1,000 students in seminary with 6 or so full time teachers. It was not a calling through the ward, it was a job through CES

I teach Seminary not as a job. I volunteer my time and serve in the calling asked of me to serve. It's not that I'm employed to do so, so I think its consistent with other callings in the Church as we keep callings volunteer service based. However, time release Seminary seems to be isolated to a few states. Is it their job and not a calling or in this case is it considered both?

I don’t really know how the Church handles seminary teachers. Yes, it is a very time-consuming calling, but here are my two cents on this matter. Like the EQ or RS, there could be a fund that can be used to activities for all the seminary classes in any given building. Probably an approximate of $100 per class, and perhaps this fund can go for the spending of weekly Friday treats. I dont know, but that's my take on this situation.

I've heard from some seminary teachers that they do have a budget for class expenses, but it's incredibly small. It's something like $50-100 for the whole year.

I think it's weird that it's a calling for some and a profession for others. It should either be one or the other. It wouldn't be weird to change people from having the calling to pay them. Simply release them and then have CES post the job openings like they do elsewhere. Sure, it would be a part-time job in most cases, but it could be beneficial for many families to have that extra income. I've heard that in terms of a time commitment, bishop is the most time consuming, and being a seminary teacher is #2.

From the perspective of someone who has friends who have studied ministry in many different religious denominations, I don't think we take seminary seriously enough. The main idea, as I understand it, is that seminary is supposed to help the high school aged youth to prepare to teach the gospel and hopefully be able to serve full time missions. If that's the case, it should be a high priority to hire and train the very best teachers so that students in all different areas can have a consistently high quality education during those important years of preparation. I think in this age of technology, it's more than possible to connect the majority of church members with this education without having to depend on untrained and inexperienced teachers. In order to avoid sending unprepared missionaries out into the field, some significant changes should be considered.

I absolutely LOVE my calling as an Early Morning Seminary Teacher! I never want to be released. I'm happy to do it for no pay because it brings me so much joy; however, having said that...I would love a budget for the donuts I bring "every Friday"! Let's be honest here folks...not only am I doing this for free, but I'm actually spending a lot of money on donuts!😂

I live in California and I had early morning seminary. It was very difficult especially during wrestling season where I would go to seminary at 6:15 and I wouldn’t get home until about 630. I would take a shower eat have a little bit of time for homework and then go to bed. Then rinse and repeat five days a week.it was a sacrifice, but it was worth it

I had release time Seminary in the Salt Lake Valley. The seminary teachers were full-time paid teachers working for CES. We had about four classes each hour every day. I have taught early morning seminary at 6 AM here in Virginia as a stake calling. I do not believe called seminary teachers should be paid. I have put in similar amounts of time preparing and doing other callings. There is a difference between doing something as a profession and accepting callings. I do believe that paid CES instructors teach seminary in some parts of the developing world. Look at new stake presidencies and it is not uncommon to see CES instructors listed as the profession of the individual called into the stake presidency.

I was in Alabama, and because we were so spread out in distance, we had the home study style seminary. We were given booklets to fill out during the week at home, and given other seminary things like scripture cards to memorize, maps, timelines, scriptures, etc. We would meet as a group once a week in the evening, either at church or at the Seminary teachers house. We would turn in our booklets to be graded and we would have a lesson, and maybe some snacks afterward. At the end of the year, those who completed the course went to a Stake Seminary graduation at the Stake center.

David asked if paying all teachers would lead to people campaigning for the position. Yes, of course. Becoming a seminary teacher as a job is incredibly difficult because of how many people go for it (I say this having gone through the initial phase of the training program and not getting invited back). But why is that bad? If it's a job, then you want people to be competing for it because that's how you get the best candidates. Bottom-line, if it's a calling then of course it shouldn't be paid: callings exist to give us the chance to volunteer our time in living consecrated lives. But if it's going to be a job that people apply to and are paid for, that's okay too. There are lots of people who work for the Church all over the world to help it accomplish its mission. There's nothing wrong with that.

I grew up in Mesa. My high school had enough members to where there were 4-5 full-time seminary teachers for 5-6 periods per day. It’s an investment that pays for itself over and over…both in temporal and spiritual blessings. It’s investing in ourselves. This is why we make millions in stocks at GameStop.

I taught early morning seminary for 8 years in Santa Barbara. It was an interesting experience. Some years were great and others were harder, but boy did I learn a lot and have some great friends from those years. We taught in our stake center and divided the classes into freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. I loved the teaching the freshman class because the kids were more excited to be there. We tried to make it fun … as much as meeting early morning can be.

Good question, and good discussion on it. On the one hand, how do you pay someone for one calling that takes a lot of time, and not pay for other callings? You guys brought up some good thoughts about why it wouldn't be a good idea. On the other hand, there could be a principle of self-reliance there, if seminary teachers were paid, that could be one more way the church helps families who struggle. I've often thought about that when cleaning the building for my twice-a-year volunteer work. Maybe paying someone to do that would help them financially instead of asking them to go to the bishop for a food order each month. Just something I've thought about.

I went to early morning seminary-didn't graduate a single year because I had insomnia. I did all the readings and scripture mastery, though-I just didn't go, and the make-up work was ridiculous. I sometimes feel, having met people who are from Utah and had seminary just as a regular class at school, that I deserve their diplomas because so many of them know NOTHING about the scriptures! I served my mission with a girl who, while watching the Prince of Egypt, asked me in complete sincerity if the plagues were in the Bible 🙃 I don't know what happened there, but so many people who do in-school seminary don't pay attention whatsoever or something

We had home study and met every Sunday morning before church. For a while we met at my house. I learned a lot… we had workbooks and scripture chase competitions. And there was always an LDS university professor OR graduate students from the University in our community to teach us. It covered about four high schools in an area covering about 50 miles. And no… it works as a great calling out in the mission field. I’ve never heard a seminary teacher out there feel like they should get paid. If they did that …they would have to be fired to change teachers. Seems like that could get dicey

@@stardustgirl2904 I’m not sure I can see how paying people who have a very demanding calling, so much so that they can’t hold a job to provide for their family, would be changing gospel.
