too many sheffield landmarks have gone. the egg boxes (Yeah I know for some reason most hated them), the hole in the road, castle market.... Man I miss castle market
Limp effort, my friend. Obviously the graffiti vandals know these places. May I suggest you do some research to explain the origins of the places you claim to be 'hidden' from Sheffielders? Lady's Bridge, for example, of which the basic 15th Century load-bearing part is still intact, despite having had numerous structures built on top of it. Take a look underneath, it's quite well hidden from the road view though. Take care. Love and peace.
That big circle on the ground on Black Swan Lane is a concreted over turn table to turn carriages around. There is a handle on the wall to turn it, though obviously it doesn't work anymore due to being concreted over.
If you were there late on when it was empty, if you stood in one of the exits and clapped, the echo would go round the circle and come back to you on the other side.
I'll sleep much better tonight after finding out about these 3 new place. I'll be up on Saturdsy morning & off to town with 3 cans of lager, one to drink with the winos i see down on each of these secret places..
Born Sheffield 1956. World Cup matches 1966. 10 years old me blown away. Nothing happened here befor e that! Late childhood, early teens. Stuff available in magazines not available here! Sheffield 600,000. People. One of biggest cities in the UK? Wtf is going on? Even now. Big city.
Most people from Sheffield know about these places where just not that stupid to walk down dead ends or sketchy looking back wacks because you're just asking to be mugged down them
A bleak concrete ghost town, Chinese students sat in shoeboxes in the sky, Chinese shops with Chinese writing only, a once thriving industrial area with pubs, workshops, little mesters, housing, characters and soul. All swept away, socially cleansed. The workshops across the road, side of St Marys are now coffee, barista and vintage clothing nonsense frequented by yuppies. As usual the yuppies cherry pick what they want to save and the rest is demolished. A dystopian future 👍
View To A Kill, saw it there in The Gaumont in July 1985. Great cinema! Saw Star Wars (first one) in early 1978 when they did a re-run of it. It was always sold out on the first showing with queues right round the block to get in. Also saw Ghostbusters there in June 1984.
Black Swan Walk isn’t a secret it just doesn’t go anywhere, and it’s where the junkies used to hang out at night so most people were warned against going there. And Jew Lane was a common shortcut when I was a teenager, I wouldn’t go down there at night though for obvious reasons. The only ‘secret’ is the river walk, but that’s not so much a secret as just fairly new.
I was baptised at St Mary’s and my Gran lived on Midland St. This area has totally changed from the 70’s when I knew it. I think there was a kids play area somewhere there with swings, rocking horse and slide - all on to tarmac! It paid not to fall off in those days. Wasn’t there a car showroom there and a small factory building to do with work for less able people?
A beautiful place in its day with an absolutely brilliant little record shop. Funny to see how all the different types of fish all vanished as the carp got fatter. I sang Christmas Carols with my school in there one year, totally unique place and sorely missed (OK it was covered in graffiti and stank of piss at the end but don't knock the nostalgia eh?)
These people are prosperous, they have good clothes that cover their whole body, otherwise people in most areas are so poor that they cannot afford to buy good clothes and they go around in a turtleneck and a vest.
@SheffieldVideos You put the video into the public domain, which means I'm entitled to my opinion. If you don't want different points of view, don't post the videos!
Lived In Edward street just behind west street. Past by this street almost every single day In 2009. I only recognise the Cavendish, Tesco and nandos. Everything else seems to have changed. Great lively street at night 👍
