Join Sheffield Videos for a walk around Sheffield City Centre to see the changes happening around Barkers Pool, Pinstone Street and the new Retail Quarter - big changes!!

We take a walk from the old John Lewis building in Barkers Pool round past Sheffield City Hall and down to the old Gaumont Building where lots of refurbishment and redevelopment work is being undertaken to make the building fantastic again.
From there we head round onto Pinstone Street and past Sheffield Town Hall and the Peace Gardens and have a look the new hotel being built here with a rooftop bar and garden that Sheffield people are looking forward to seeing.
From there we dip down Pinstone Street towards the Moor where even more work is being done as building work takes place on the old buildings that had seen better days, and where Sheffield is once again being brought back to life by exciting big new buildings!

Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire England. It's famous for steel, The Full Monty, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United football clubs, The Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard, Pulp, The Human League, Heaven 17, Joe Cocker and lots more amazing musical bands that come from the steel city.
Sheffield is a wonderful place with so much fantastic countryside just a stone's throw away if you want to get out of the city centre and into the outskirts.
Sadly Sheffield is also home to some of the most depressing moaners online that you could ever wish to meet. Every facebook group or forum is stuffed full of Sheffield people moaning about the city centre, saying it's rat infested, full of litter, homeless people and unused cycle lanes.
Life is what you make it. People see what they choose to see sometimes.This channel is about challenging that and proving those moaners wrong.
I love and celebrate Sheffield and think the city centre is coming on a treat and will be fantastic in just a few years!

Born and bred in our wonderful City. Exiled in Northumberland at present, I always keep up to date with the developments in Sheffield. Even approaching my 69th birthday in August I still get excited when I see how Sheffield is still being progressive and overcoming adversity with the same indomitable spirit exhibited by Sheffielders in the Blitz. Whilst not everyone likes all that is being done, surely one must agree that progress is better than stagnation. Many thanks for posting your interesting, informative and entertaining presentations.

Looking back, it was unthinkable that I wouldn't go into the City Centre, like so many others that's where we shopped, dragged round both markets by mum, toasted teacake in Shaws cafe, then the broken biscuit stall and meat market. As teenagers, Harringtons for clothes, r Suggs for shirts, boots etc saw Star Wars at the Gaumont, game of Snooker in the place upstairs at the side of Coles, Then not long after Friday & Saturday night pub crawls! Can't remember the last time I visited the City Centre, probably for the Remembrance parade.

I left Sheffield over 70 years ago with my parents, and have missed it ever since. I do not recognize much of it today. However, it is looking good.

Sheff City Centre needs moving to meadowhall because there's actual people and shops that are open there .. biggest ever mistake allowing meadowhall to open in 1991 it has slowly murdered Sheffield aka ghost town

Yes but retail is dying so the plan now should be to get people living in the city centre again and get the footfall back up and then have stuff like cafes, bars, venues, events there!

Meadowhall also gave alot of people jobs. Meadowhall is a safer environment for families.

Sheffield is a city that has always adapted and changed to tackle the challenges thrown at it. It's understandable that for some people such radical change is difficult - when you've grown up in a place and have happy, nostalgic memories of it, it can be hard to see those places you loved morphing into something new. But cities are changing and Sheffield is again rising to the challenge. (side note: I love watching these videos, but I think I prefer them without music - purely because I love the ambient sound - but maybe that's just me!)

I'll always use natural sound where possible - I only put music on if there's bad wind or copyright music being played somewhere that I need to cover up

Yes, it all looks very exciting. And old and tired buildings being replaced with new or refurbished add to it. But we do need quality businesses to occupy them. Losing JL was a huge blow.

We moved to Sheffield in 1959, when my Dad retired from The RN to work at Basset's. The Town Hall was black and a huge monument was at the top of the Moor. It became a colourful place to live in as I grew up in my teens. I worked at the University for my first job. I left home and Sheffield in 1971, my folks retired and moved to Bakewell. A few years ago I went to my nephew's wedding and didn't recognise the city that I once knew but I guess everywhere is like that once you move on in life

I'll have to have a revisit of Sheffield when it's all done. Lived there for 10 years but left in 2007. Still have very fond memories of the place. My parents live there (in Woodhouse) but I never go into the centre anymore

I'm glad that red monstrosity that was on the Gaumont site has gone. It never fitted in. It's sad to see so few people enjoying the city centre. It's not cheap to park there. Very proud of my city and I've watched it evolve since I was a boy. Now I'm an OAP I can bus in for free.

Right now it's like watching a beating heart being replaced by a battery pack I loved coming into Sheffield and spending the day around the city shopping, walking around the bright open spaces,having lunch or dinner before a show (at least we still have the City Hall). Sheffield had everything for me Meadowhall does nothing for me at all. You say retail is dying but also apparently not in the synthetic atmosphere of Meadowhall. Christmas shopping was wonderful in the City. Bustling, busy, but exciting as you staggered from shop to shop with your being instantly revived by the street entertainment and the sparkle of a crisp winter afternoon. This year it'll be York for me. I wouldn't touch Meadowhall at Christmas if it was wrapped up in a big tinsel bow, thanks very much!

The video says the building along Pinstone Street is being turned into a hotel and cafe/bar, but how many hotels and bars can a city need? Are there not a couple of hotels where the old "egg box" town hall was? Also, it wasn't so long ago the council wanted to demolish all that facade and it's not long ago they demolished the hotel in Charter Square. There's never been anything done with the former Castle Markets site, it look a seedy dump around there as I found when , for the first time in a few years I had to go into town.

Why have a hotel after the old hotels were knocked down? Why would you want to stay in sheff town centre. Redevelopment is good for companies but not sure for a city that has lost a lot of town centre shops, but then if people didnt order online from amazon town would still be booming, times move on i suppose, like the death of the old markets

100% - cities can't rely on retail now It's all about getting a city to be a destination for leisure, cares, bars, venues, events and get people living in the city centre too!

@@SheffieldVideos you talk out of your a..., try filming in Liverpool,Manchester,Leeds, there's far far better shops,and lots and lots of retail, so try telling them they cant rely on retail. Were knocking down buildings and replacing them with hotels and offices? you can count on one hand the amount of new bars being built. There's nothing to come into the town centre for anymore, all the people saying its great have just not been anywhere else to compare how bad it is.

I just got back to Canada after a month there. The city centre is awful. Even the charity shops are closed. It used to be a vibrant hub when I lived there in the 1970's. Chapel Walk was just depressing.

spot on, it's an awful place to live. Dead as a dodo. Compared to other UK cities Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Birmingham - it's a hole in the ground.
