I really appreciate that you lean heavily into the 'cartooniness' in your art style. It really lends a lot of personality and dynamic exaggeration to your characters. There's a lot of really stiff-looking stuff out there these days, and seeing this is a breath of fresh air. Your work is awesome, man!
Its so hard to get traction on Webtoons if your not on theme. Generally I feel theres too much division in the western comics industry. Meaning Indie manga as well as American comics.
If only he can go as hard on his Art. Buddies own work couldn't even be pitched to ANY indie comic companies. You have NO right to critizes as an Artist. As a reader, sure, everyone has their own opinion. But as another comic artist? Hell no, most of the folks you critize wouldn't even see you as a peer.
Many manga get anime adaptations, and that is what drives manga sales the most. The big three' success? Anime. JoJo? Anime adaptation. My hero/JJK/Demon slayer? All of these popular manga have high sales both in Japan and outside of it because of their excellent anime adaptation. Getting into the manga is extremely simple just google what chapter/volume the season left off on. The only manga I can think of that is popular without an anime is Kagurabachi, and that's cause of memes, if you wanna push it berserk since it has no adaptation beyond golden age. Comics on the other hand, they don't get that level of support. Very rarely is a comic adapted to a whole film/series. Many times they mix many comics into one film like Thor ragnarok or just uses the comic as a rough first draft for the script like No way Home adapting One more day. This makes getting into comics difficult and can be a deal-killer for some. And this isn't by mistake, it's by **design**, comics have been seen as a lesser form of writing and drawing for many years, at least in America. It's seen as something for kids and teens, it was of lesser dignity to be a comic artist or writer. It would take the work of many creators and many years for its potential to be recognized and as you said the closest comparison we have is invincible, it got an amazing adaptation that is in line with the comic and doesn't shy away from it. Many Hollywood execs do shy away from source material creating this divide, whereas manga to anime there's basically mild censorship at best. Also yeah japanese work culture is insane, this is a problem with Asia in general and their need for like 60-90 hour weeks but the output is much faster so an audience can be gathered in a fraction of a time, the wait between new seasons is also short.
I’ve always hated my hero and the main character I’ve always find him to be a lil wuss and annoying cry baby - But I like the art lol ive never read it - mid
I think in koffee’s videos there’s 1 truth and 99 bullshit, projection, frustration and aggression He’s too violent, dismissive, and just bad mouthed overall… I’m also working on a manga, we can read each other’s works Do you have discord maybe we can talk
Basically projecting and putting something on a pedestal hence why the massive disappointment. People do this alot with media and i believe its a contributing factor as to why people cant have a healthy relationship with things they really enjoy
I'd say think of it like this: If they both have the same amount of skill points, then it's really a matter of where they applied them. Miura put most of his SP into realistic rendering and deep, high level storytelling. Oda put his into high level cartooning, worldbuilding, and humor etc.
Awesome video :) I was wondering did you end up finishing your schooling at the Joe Kubert School and how was your experience? Thats one my dream schools I am taking the corresponding courses and at Watts Atelier right now.
I am a little suspicious of "The Rules" in manga. It's Right to Left because reading orientation is such in Japan. Colour vs black and white is more a publisher frugality and insane deadlines mangaka keep in Japan
Koffee is right. The industry is filled with lazy, uninspired people who’s willing to feed off each other. Everything now is mediocre and lackluster. There are no standards. No professionalism. No competition. I see people copying each other instead of having their own styles. Creators need to educate themselves on the business of creating instead of depending on companies. Everybody wants to be part of the machine instead of being independent. They look up to the industry as if it’s something to idolize but it has a dark side that will swallow you up. You can’t even criticize the industry because people are so hypnotized by it. When you have no critical thinking or standards then you easily become a mindless tool to the machine base on what they promise you. But then they end up owning you and you lose your creative spirit. It becomes a never ending cycle.
