Hi people of modular and fellow GAS sufferers! This channel was created to document by musical journey from zero to somewhere in the world of modular. Ok, maybe that’s wishful thinking, but this channel has been created to force myself to record, and more importantly complete, musical pieces to stop the endless noodling! If others find it interesting then all then better which will force my production quality to improve further.
Batsh1t crazy is what it was lol. It’s so much fun getting 16 note microtonal patterns out of BIA if you have a little patience with Mimetic’s random CV generation and save the fun ones.
Nice sound! I brought a one module from make noise, I don’t own another modules. I have a Arturia MiniBrute and a tb 303. How do i turn the thing on? Does it need another power source? I tried plugging it into my 303 and MiniBrute, but no luck. 😞
@@markbooth “Maths” by make noise. All it came with was tiny Philips screws and a flat cable that connects to module. Do I need something else to power?
Ah ok, yeah that’s not a stand-alone module and you’ll need a Eurorack case with power. It’s an envelope generator so how do you plan to use it with your Minibrute?
@@Guitarist888 yes, sadly you will need a Eurorack case like an Intellijel Palette 62HP case and there are not cheap at a few hundred pounds. What are you hoping to use Maths for?
Your early Eurorack videos in the palette case showing happy accidents and poly rhythms was my main inspiration to get into Eurorack. You know you’ve made it when god comments :)
Cheers for this! I ordered mine last week, it's currently being processed in Customs, and will be with me in the next day or two. Watching through all the videos one more time before it arrives.
I use the BOC on a LPG, so every now and then It gives som extra notes as a bassline, or ornaments or so. If Its well synced it sounds awesome Its a superb LFO, btw
Hi and glad you're enjoying the channel. Just taken a look and at 10:54 the kick and hats are added from Squid Salmple. Channel 3 (kick) & 4 (hats) on the Quad VCA have the long black cables coming in from it. The 4 yellow outputs are then going out to Expert Sleepers ES-9 and mixed in Ableton with a little side chain compression and a default Ozone mastering mix to bring the levels up for RU-vid. Hope this helps and there are plenty more similar videos more recently if interested.
@@markbooth thank you for the quick feedback ! yes that helps, if you confirm that those are coming from other sources that means i'm not that stupid. haha . Will check your other videos for sure, cheers !
@@bertrandvanasch I try and say where extra sound sources are coming from more recently so people don’t think there is cheating going on in small system sound setups.
Some people like to comment that it’s not representative of what you can hear which is fair enough. I just want to focus on showing the main voice though where possible
Amazingly thorough and informative videos. As a newbie to modular I am learning a lot from watching your videos. I love the sound that comes out of the c4rbn. However it seems that WMD are no longer in business and the c4rbn is pretty much unavailable now. Would you have any recommendations as to alternative filters out there that can provide a similar amount of fun to play with and to listen to?
Thanks. I try not to have any preconceived ideas for RU-vid videos. I just like to play and then record when I feel something is worth sharing. Thanks for the positive feedback and I’ll try to keep them coming
@@markbooth one video I'd love to see is one on finding various sweet spots on the BIA with modulation points. For example with this video you really made it sing!
@@jakegraves5977 funny you should request that as I’m currently doing just that but with the Loquelic Iteritas Percido. It’s an elderly relative killer in the wrong hands but boy does it sing when tamed. I’ll make a note to do the same with BIA
It is, RU-vid is just taking a bit long processing the 4k version tonight and I scheduled it a bit early sorry. It’s still got another 43 minutes to go
Ah crap it’s published before the 4k version has finished rendering. It’s had almost 3 hours already but should be there soon sorry. I’ve not had any problems with syncing the two. Check out my quite recent video on clock and reset using PNW
Setup Steppy to 'run mode' and run a full gate from Pams into Steppy's reset. On Steppy hold save when powering on to toggle between the two modes. I don't have any sync issues with PPW or PNW.
I like the set-up, definitelya dynamic start-up case. Nice lil funky groove. 🎉 if it were me, id opt out the pams workout, and put in a Ochd and a horologic solum.
@@markbooth ah good point. Yeah replacing the 1u could be an option. There's a smaller version as well. Also a few 1u clocks out there I think. And a few options for 2-3hp attenuators
My lighting is really poor and 4k seems to look better with the low light levels just a pain to edit on an original M1 Mac. If also edited out all the speech issue, just need to work better on prep like Mike position and hydrations. Thanks for the help
Another great vid Mark. Really sound advice here. I wish you had made this vid a year ago before I went bezerk and spent a fortune on Eurorack. As you say it’s too easy to fall for the spell and buy lots of voices, which when you’ve run out of money you can’t use. With this set up you have the core modules that are very playable, but will remain useful as the system expands. The main take is know what you want to achieve with your rack. I thought I knew, I reckon I’ve sold 90% of my original set up as they didn’t do what I wanted. For chuggy house/techno the set ups that you suggest are perfect :)
I’ve learnt the hard way too don’t worry :) we want to make better sounds so we buy new voices but have no way of controlling and playing them. At least the second hand market is pretty robust.
Fantastic content, your video on sinfonion sold me to finally commit to it. Off-topic, I'm really sorry, my only feedback is the lip-smacking--i think I have misophonia, the sound of it was driving me mad lol. There's a lot of easy ways to remove it from recordings.
Wish I’d bought one a few years ago when cheaper but still no regrets as opens up a system to so much melodic creativity. And yes I’m sorry about the sound. I try to edit out those parts better now but let me know if you still notice anything in my newer videos.
nice little selection there, for compressors ive not looked into getting one yet, but may veer towards endorphins, as it has low mid high button cutoffs
As long as it has a sidechain then that's all that really matters for this demo. One with plenty of control is better though if staying out of your DAW in a live performance setup.
There are 6 CV sequences here and 2 gate sequences. Voltage block would work well instead of Mimetic and Clep if you have one. The rest is just a filter, envelope, and delay/reverb effects unit. Then add on a kick.
Kept it quite high level to focus on what you can get out of it and the fun performance aspects. Probably warrants a deeper dive into the patch and suggested replacement available to buy modules
Sadly three of those modules are unobtanium. I am loving your use of the mimetic. Ànother module that would work great here would be some version of piques. Don't get me wrong I love the kick all but the kick and snare you can get from a peaks clone would be great.
Sadly WMD modules are no more but I’m not doing anything special with them here so any ADSR, filter and compressor would do. If I were building a setup to mimic this I’d get a Knobula Kickain which handles kick and ducking in one and a Steve’s MS-22 filter if possible too. I’ve not tried a piques but heard good things about them
This is a really nice approach of a small palette case. At some point I do want to get one so I can cram some stuff into it as well. It definitely makes you focus on a main idea like making an ad. Maybe there’s some supporting copy or something. Me personally, I’d probably build it around a bard quartet, a pizza, steppy and a switchblade. Have you considered one of those small mosaic clock modules? Think I might get one for clocking in my case. A couple choices of course: random, clock, and I think tap.
Thanks for this video. I’m just about to get into Eurorack and am glad to see your rack consists of many of the modules I’ve been eyeing. Would be great to have a follow up video explaining a little more on what some of the smaller modules do and why you picked them. Thanks!
Yeah I think this one deserves a follow up as there’s a fail bit going on. While waiting, definitely worth check out these previous videos Why BIA is so special -ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cfOwMfEzeHM.html Clep Diaz - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XpIqZGeygE0.html Steppy - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nnG1QeJISFE.html
Well spotted! I bypassed the effects unit for this clock walkthough to keep things easy to follow on beat. The Javelin output is going straight out to the audio interface, I just forgot to remove green cables to the Versio.
Love how you approached that programmatic request based on what you have in the case there. Also, seeing Constellation next to Maestro with the numbers in the middle. Haven’t even watched the whole video yet ha.
I do like the quality of the c4rbn filter with bia, for filters i've been using blue lantern modules hermippe, cause of the vol level it offers as well as res and ping option.
Thanks Mark, I have been doing this by diving into the channel menu. So good to know it is available on the the top tier multiple menu. Also you just taught me about the end gate trigger, which I can see some uses for, as it could trigger a faller/riser in to a B section or drop back into the main beat again. always love your videos, very approachable and inline with my learning style, thanks again.
