The UC Davis MIND Institute is a collaborative international research center, committed to the awareness, understanding, prevention, and care of people with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

In 1998, families of children with autism helped found the UC Davis MIND Institute. They envisioned experts from every discipline related to early brain development working together toward one goal; finding and developing treatments for individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Today, the MIND Institute brings together members of the community including families, educators, physicians, psychologists, and scientists. They are collaborating to further understand causes, development and best treatments for Autism, Fragile X Syndrome, Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, and other neurodevelopmental disabilities.

I was placed under a 51/50 hold and also 52/52 hold when I was experiencing a "mental crisis" for the first time in my life when becoming mentally sick after years of abuse with no treatment. Because of the Lanterman Petris Short Act, I was held against my will in a psychiatric hospital and treated like an animal and not held with dignity. I was locked inside a hospital, all valuables removed from me, and then forced medication on the condition that then I could leave. This law needs to be changed here in the United States because mentally ill persons shouldn't be locked inside a hospital with forced medications that don't cure the client. It's abuse. I don't recommend anyone go to a psychiatric hospital after what I experienced here in California. I rate it with the lowest stars: 0 stars out of 5. I also would say that the nurses and psychiatrists there were only there just to make money and not interested in the abuse I was experiencing as an adult female. After this experience, I struggle now being made a "lifetime customer" to the medical establishment: getting diagnosed with a mental illness, needing to see a psychiatrist for medication refills, indefinitely until I die. The psychiatric medication permanently alters your brain chemistry when you're given this and effects your ability to recover without it and therefore causes a risk of relapse back into the same abusive system. These nurses, psychiatrists, pharmacists, health insurances do make a lot of money in this abusive cycle...so are these professionals* even trying to find a cure, or just stringing us sick people along a lifelong journey of dependency? It's not healing or peaceful to have "medicine" and "medical professionals" who force you into a building against your will, while you're struggling to survive as an individual experiencing a mental crisis. I'm not sure if other countries have more dignified and higher standards of care for clients going though this. Europe, how do you treat your loved ones who are going through a mental crisis? Is it any better? Europe must have a higher level of healthcare than the U.S. I'm apart of NAMI and I believe that people should protest and change this law for psychiatric care. It's abusive and corrupt. Take care of the sick, don't hurt them and exploit them! What a sick world.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 15. I took the drugs like they told me to...like they told my mom, rather, to give me. For 3 years I was a total mess as I played guinea pig with different meds that obly mads things waaaay worse. I finally stopped taking meds as soonas i could make my own decisions knowing that that diagnosis was just wrong!! I was then diagnosed with ADHD around rhe ago of 20 but I chose not to take medication until years later. At 26 i dtarted taking meds for ADHD and they seemed to help some but there has always been sometyjng "weird" about me. I could mlstly tell that something wasn't "right" by how other women seemed to treat me. I remember describe thjs treatment warly on as if they treated me like a germ. Like what ever was "wrong" with me they djdnt want to catch. Ive struggled my whole live with understanding myself. I dont have an ASD diagnosis and at the age of 40 im not sure a doctor would even take me seriously anyway. 😢 I just want to be able to put my finger one whats always been "wrong" with me so i dont feel so l...lost in my world and...frustrated with my difference conpared to those around me. I want what i can never have and thats just to be normal, natural, and typical. Those kinds of people seem to have a much easier time on this plane of existence.

Listening to this describes in a way completely alien to me. I'm autistic as is my son and neither of us have any language deficits, both correctly used expansive vocabulary early. Neither of us are mind blind to our own thoughts or others. Both high IQ. Theory of mind tests sound weird, just because my eyes might not move doesn't mean my brainisn't thinking about something. I learnt how to use deoderant by asking my parents what they were doing, lots of curiousity which is probably why I was a scientist and my son is moving towards engineering and technology

My whole family is autistic, I am too... but they all have a severe personality disorder, ranging from histrionic to BPD to psychopathy and even schizophrenia and as i have observed my family for 48 years, i realize that autism is the starting point for all those conditions. Autism, personality disorders and schizophrenia are linked and that's why they all share the same characteristics. Those with personality disorders all have some form of delusions, they will ostracized a family member projecting their evil side onto them. That's why there is always a scapegoat in those dysfonctional families. AUTISM/PERSONALITY DISORDERS/SCHIZOPHRENIA Same neuro-developmental condition Same enlarge lateral ventricule and 3rd ventricule Same serotonine/Dopamine dysfonctions Same "psychosis" form at different levels Empathy problems Same executive/organisation dysfonctions (some dont) but overall it's a lot of common problems. Autism is the starting point, but I think we've misinterpreted the data and that, in fact, personality disorders are a milder form of schizophrenia. We say of a narcissist that his eyes turned black when he was angry, it means that he has a transient psychosis, he reinvents the situation, he makes things up, exactly like a schizophrenic, this can't be a coincidence... it's a mild form of schizophrenia. Not all autistic will be schizophrenic but all schizophrenic are autistic. And everyone with personality disorders are autistic too

Yes, my mother says I barely talked for two years, apart from a rudimentary "Mommy" and "Daddy," and then one fine morning as she was washing the dishes and I was having my breakfast I stunned her with "I wanted a banana in my cereal."

This seems impractical for the average family, especially in San Francisco. At least there are resources available to kids. My parents saw how anxious I was about missing something, being late, etc, but they wouldn’t have had the time for this. Parents also may lack the insight. My mom recently told me that I was “perfect,” so I never needed help. Uh, no!
