We both survived, haha! The book is "Uno soñaba que era rey" by Enrique Serna. It's a tantalizing glimpse into the realities of Mexican society, with chapters written in "barrio" Spanish, "fresa" Spanish, and everything in between. Everything by Serna is excellent, btw. Thanks so much for the tip 🤗

At timestamp 1:37, would "¿A cómo da la manzana?" also be appropriate, especially if I'm speaking to someone much older than me?
@spanishunraveled
@spanishunraveled 7 дней назад
Yep, that would actually be more appropriate if you were speaking to someone older than you :) We didn't go into all the nuances in this video, but will make one on "tú" + "usted" v.soon. As an aside, I'd say the easiest + possibly the best option in Mexico is "¿A cómo están las manzanas?"

Hey Andres :) 'Fueron' is in the 'ustedes' (or formal you plural) form here. Hope that helps 🤗

In one of her songs, Joan Baez uses the word pachuco. Is that related to pacheco?
@spanishunraveled
@spanishunraveled 10 дней назад
Hey David :) I don't think so! Chat GPT says the following: "Pachuco" refers to a cultural and fashion movement that emerged in the Mexican-American communities in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s. Would that make more sense?

thanks for the overview. one question: what about when the subject (object in English) is only mentioned as pronoun, like it would be in "I (don't) need it" --> (no) lo necesito ? how can we do that with "hacerle falta" ?
@spanishunraveled
@spanishunraveled 17 дней назад
Hey :) You could just say "no me hace falta." There's no need for an additional pronoun as the thing that's needed or lacking is already implied in the structure

Otra forma de emplear "tocarle" es como una prohibición: Ejemplos > "No vayas a "tocarle" el hocico al perro" o " No toques las pertenencias de esta persona" o "No toquen esa canción por favor, que me trae amargos recuerdos"
@spanishunraveled
@spanishunraveled 17 дней назад
Hola :) Sí, son buenos ejemplos, pero el verbo en esas oraciones es "tocar" y no "tocarle". En "No vayas a tocarle el hocico al perro," el "le" funciona como un complemento indirecto, refiriéndose al perro 🤗
