It was such a wonderful pleasure to collaborate with you and Daniel on this composition! I so look forward to the next time we perform together. Hopefully soon! ♥️🎶
Thank you so much, Austin! This is a real masterpiece and I can't wait to perform it more and record it for CD this September! Also, Austin, thank you for all your support of my mission and work and the work of your colleagues and professors! I can't wait to work with you again on further projects!
NEC and Ken were really wonderful to me by letting me borrow their bass for my residency there back in Jan 2022. I have my own mouthpiece though. I must admit it is still my preferred bass saxophone out of all the basses I have played in my life. I would purchase that instrument in a heart beat!
Thank you so very much for this incredible piece, Minoo! I had a brilliant time working with you, recording, and performing it! Excited for the next many performances!! 🎷💪
Thank you so much for your kind words, dear Andrew! I agree that it is an incredibly fascinating piece with such a rich texture of sounds! Thanks for listening!
Thank you so much to everyone who listened in to the Premiere yesterday! Also, to Austin Engelhardt for this incredible work and his dedication to the contemporary saxophone. Austin and I had met years ago at UMKC and it was great to finally work together while he was at NEC on this brilliant work for solo saxophone and electronics. Please go and check out his other work on his website and socials!
Quite an effective piece, I think. The opening, certainly, evokes a mood appropriate for a ghost story (in my humble opinion). The bookending with solos is an interesting idea as well.
It has been an absolute pleasure to work on this masterpiece for the baritone saxophone! I can only hope that more people take up this wonderful work by an incredible voice! Thank you so much, dear Gabriel!
Thank you so much! That means a lot! Ian and I worked hard to figure out what worked the best with this combination - never the easiest to balance the voice and the saxophone voices in any context - I think that we found a good balance here though!
Thank you so very much, Kenichi! I am really truly humbled! This piece has become a staple of my repertoire and I can only wish that all saxophonists take it on in theirs as well! A true gem of a work! I can't wait for our next collaboration, dear Kenichi!
@@donpaulkahl _"I can only wish that all saxophonists take it on"_ There's at least one who would like to, if he thought he had a chance in hell of being able to meet its requirements! ;-)
@@rloomis3 It is one hell of a piece if you are really up to the challenge! I know that this piece gave me a lot and taught me even more about my own playing! Also, a bit of practice every day is worth quite a lot when you count all those hours! ;-)
I hope to hear more pieces from this project! That's a Supreme you're playing, no? Can you offer any thoughts on the difference between it and the horn you were playing previously?
This is a wonderful project that Spencer made! Most of the pieces have been recorded from the Ethos series. You can find all the videos interpreted by the different commissioners on his website! This is a Supreme. I switched to a Supreme back in September from a Series II. I love the richness of sound, ease of response, the homogeneity across all registers, the precision of intonation, and it is an instrument that I feel I can continue to grow with and push my limits with. My series II is a great horn but I fought so hard against the intonation and I felt that I could only reach so far in terms of flexibility of what I wanted to do on the instrument and homogeneity of sound. Maybe I should do a comparison video actually!
The collaboration with Dave was super special for us and we had a blast! We were so happy to get to work with him on this incredible piece and we hope it reaches many! Jackie and I both are excited to hear more people perform it!
Thanks so very much! I must admit that I love this piece a lot - it has such a gorgeous texture. The slaps are fun but if I remember correctly I chipped that reed from this performance - so I had to do the whole last half (and the solo!) on a chipped reed! Fun but dangerous!
It is pretty intense, I must admit. It is an effective piece though based on a true story gleaned from the diaries of a patient in a mental hospital that was treating her with malpractice. So it, admittedly, is extremely dark. Hope you still enjoyed the performance!
