Program Note (written by Olivia Wilkins-Becker):
FLEECE was written in 2023 by Olivia Wilkins-Becker and Emiliano López for electronic instruments and Don-Paul Kahl on alto saxophone. The electronics are homemade - Olivia plays a light-sensitive oscillator inside a cardboard box, while Emiliano plays a tree built out of metal rods, amplified and processed through a contact mic and his computer.
FLEECE is named after the sudden but brief dissociation you experience in a mundane moment of cringe - nails against a chalkboard, a joke that doesn't land, or dry skin snagging on a fleece sweater. In these tiny out-of-body moments of overstimulation, where do you go? A cool, dark cave - a waiting room - another plane? Where is the switch that flips from hyper-fixation to distance?
