In October of 2016 a series of life events led me to the decision to abandon the modern-day paradigm and live my life to the fullest through travel and adventures. I quickly set off for the Grand Canyon from my home state of Kansas. Since that time, I've traveled to 48 states to National Parks, scenic byways, abandoned places, flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales, antique stores & roadside attractions. I have lots of video of places I've been & have decided to share them on my channel. Most of the videos are unedited, but I'm learning to edit as I go along.

As I grow older, my desire to see more of the world grows. This includes people, places, things, the forgotten and the soon-to-be forgotten. Life is a journey that we are all on. This vlog highlights some things "Along the Way" of my personal journey, adventures & experiences.

Join me as I explore interesting places & things around the United States....and whatever else I may encounter...Along the Way.

It used to be a beautiful town.... until gambling joint took over and destroyed the family and friends financially. Also the place has a real bad flood zone every time a bad storm fills up the nearby rivers.

It seems like a lot of hard times have hit the once beautiful town! There are still a few beautiful structures left, and there are several buildings listed as landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places I enjoyed seeing. I didn't know about the gambling problems. Thank you for sharing and watching my video!

That's so awesome!! I actually remember your uncle! I was thinking they must be wondering what I was doing driving around in circles in their town! Lol...the second time I passed, I think we waved at each other when he was leaning on the truck! That is a really neat old historic church that was there too! I hope it's still standing. Do you know if the building at 7:46 is a church or house? I think it looks like it's Victorian Era architecture, and I really liked it. I haven't seen another one like it. It seems like it must have been a nice, tight-knit community. When I was looking online, I didn't find a lot of information about the mines in the area. I did find one article where a gentleman said he remembered there being a WWII camp there in Gypsy. I was just wondering if you might have heard that, too? I noticed that specific information on several of the mining towns in that area is not so easy to find online. Thank you so much for commenting and watching my video!

I especially dig your stream of consciousness narrations as in Beauty Ky (the land is beautiful not sure about the people 😁) mentioning stray road dogs, garage sales back in the hollers, your elation at seeing a (groan, not another one) Dollar General and long extinct “hamburger joints.” I too have streams of consciousness when I travel…
@along-the-way
@along-the-way 2 дня назад
I do get all over the place sometimes! LOL..I travel alone a lot so I talk to the camera as my friend. It somehow keeps the fear away. Focusing on saving stray dogs and the world from the sneaky Dollar General takeover makes me feel purposeful. 🤣 Now I'm shining the flashlight on American food favorites. It thrills me that you notice! Speaking of stray dogs, I have never seen so many running wild and free as I did in Eastern Kentucky! I made it home without bringing one home, though! It's a steady stream of consciousness! 😊

I love SE Kansas and I've never even been there. It"s because I love "off the beaten path" history. You're the only person on YT I've seen to have visited the (once) site of Esperanza (Urbana). And Galesburg is just a few miles north of the notorious Bender Hills of Labette County. The book "Hells Half- Acre" (Susan Jonusas) is a great read. And your mining towns of (Tri-State Mining Dist.) Armas and Arcadia KS videos are really nice as well.
@along-the-way
@along-the-way 2 дня назад
That's the best comment ever! Thank you so much!! I've been doing this for a while because I noticed there is so much not recorded. Why not turn the camera on while I'm curiously exploring. So much American history has just been thrown to the wind. I wanted to make some kind of dent in keeping something, and reading your comment makes me realize that's happening. Thank you for that! I'm getting a little better at the videos too! LOL...I have Cherryvale, KS on my list. I've been holding off because I wanted to hit the museum there at the same time, and they are rarely open. I have been to Parsons, which is close, and I have a short video of that town. I'm still hoping to get to Girard again for the Little Blue Books house. So much ground to cover! Southeast Kansas is quite historic and much of it is on the verge of the forgotten. Picher, OK and Treece, KS was part of the Tri-state mining company too, and I have a video of them. They are extinct mining towns that happened to be the number one producer of lead and zinc in World War I and World War II. Southwest Missouri was a part of it too. I have videos of Oronogo, MO, Purcell, MO, Alba, MO and Webb City, MO. They were all mining towns close or part of the Tri-state Mining Company. I have more to do, and hopefully my videos will get better "Along The Way" 😊. Thank you again for the kind words, I find them encouraging!

The Chevy pickup is either a 1979 or 80 year model. 1979 was the first year for the gas filler doors, & 1980 was the last year for the nose on the front & bodyside molding trim with those designs.

@along-the-way those generation Chevrolet & GMC pickups, SUVs, & medium duty series models were produced from 1973 - 1991 except the plain cab pickups "half ton & three quarter ton models only" were finished in 1987, & the one ton plain cab pickups were finished in 1989. They were the first to have the Silverado trim level introduced in 1975. It replaced the Cheyenne Super trim level. Those generation pickups were also the first Chevys & GMCs to come in bigger size cabs which were crew cabs introduced in 1973. Unlike the crew cabs today which are also offered on half ton models with a short box, crew cabs back then were only offered on three quarter ton & one ton models, & all had a long fleetside box. The crew cabs didn't come in 4 wheel drives until 1977 but only on the one ton models. In 1987, the C/K series were dropped & renamed R/V series & the reason they changed the names was to make a distinction between the models & upcoming next generation C/K series pickups for the 1988 model year because both body designs were going to be in production at the same time which lasted up through 1991. Only the plain cab pickups were redesigned in 1988 & was the first year for the extended cab on that new body design too. The rest of the models weren't redesigned until 1992.

Just checked out the listing. Been up for sale for over 10 years. I'd imagine restoring five floors within over 6,700 sq. st. would be into the million$. Everything to restore would have to be custom milled and custom EVERYTHING! The house has been looted. Many of the original fireplaces and antique lighting have been removed. Standard Oil still owns it but wants to sell it to the "right" person who has the bucks. The restoration would cost in excess of nearly 10 times the last asking price.
@along-the-way
@along-the-way 7 дней назад
Wow!! Ten years is a long time, but as you said, it would cost a fortune to customize everything. It's so sad that it's been looted! It is in a really nice neighborhood, and there seem to be a lot of eyes on it, so I'm thinking they must have worked hard to get things out of there. Thank you so much for sharing the information!
