It’s not so fun when you clean the kitchen just to extract the honey but then have to clean it again cause everywhere was sticky 🤣🤣 in places we didn’t even touch 🤣🤦🏼♀️ was so enjoyable though I can’t wait to do the next lot now ❤ so proud of you xxxx
Thanks Danny. Always good when you can take off a crop, there is always a demand for honest produced local honey (do treat your good lady with at least some of the proceeds) 😊. Likewise with any surplus nucs in the spring, there will always be someone local who will be interested anf its nice to pass on your knowledge to them, but make sure you recover your costs, as equipment is not cheap. Cheers. Peter😊
@@eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 yeah I could of sold this honey twice over lol, kept a lot of it for my wonderful wife that helped me out and the kids with hay fever.yes unless your a beekeeper you will never understand the amount of money spent to get to this point.. I’m shaw since I stayed in April I recon I’m on about 4k now 😂🐝🤷♂️
@@eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 yes that’s what I’m hoping,I’ve got another supper coming although it’s only 6 frames more it may just cover me for more room until the end of August when queen starts to not lay so much
@@nimmimankame8727 thank you so much, like I say plenty more to come and always feel free to comment on what I’m doing or questions you need answering as I’m always happy to help:
@@nimmimankame8727 ahh thank you so much, just trying to keep it real for people to see how it really is. Meany more videos to come. Please enjoy watch and once again thank you. Always welcome to advice and more, always happy to be picked up on what I’ve done wrong so I can myself put right..🐝🐝
The red thing is your uncapping fork. Our first year we decided to do the extraction in the shed only my son then cut his hand resulting in me making a mad dash with him to the medical centre for stitches and guess what, in our mad rush we forgot to close up the shed and id say every bee in the neighbourhood was in there robbing the honey 😂 Didn't make same mistake again
your surposed to calbrate it .and the glass /plastic plate shud press on to it .another mistake no pets allowed in the extraction area.all you had to do was remove some undrawn frames replace with extracted ones and not mess about under the xcluder..you risk killing your queen .the bees will move stores up to free up space for the queen to lay.why not look for queen before you move the nuc .and you just coughed on it..aslong as your keeping it for yourself no matter .like your labels ..use a peace of tissure to flaten your labels on your jar better than your fingers.wont get any creases ..sorry not nit picking it all helps you down the line...
Looking forward to watching the rest of this tomorrow Danny. I'm only a few minutes in. Just a tip, I was advised to cut from the bottom going up rather than from top to bottom. Hope that makes sense? I bet the dogs loved them smell! 😂
You should have taken some frames out of the bigger hive to extract. The queen hasn't got enough room, I didn't recall seeing any eggs or brood on any of the frames. Extract half of the frames and return them, create a brood and a half for the queen. No reason why you couldn't remove the top super for extraction and replace it with a new super......
@@dcleal1Do it sooner rather than later because they'll swarm due to lack of space for the queen to lay. (Enjoy your first honey crop!) I've enjoyed your channel. You've been really honest and could have edited the mistakes etc out but have been really genuine with your journey. Well done. NOW GO AND GIVE THAT QUEEN SOME BLOODY SPACE! 😂
In case you haven't seen it, there a few keepers who have a screen that is bent over on all sides so that all they have to do it put it over the queen and push it into the comb a little and mark her from there. Some lift it slightly and let her walk around as the mark dries so they don't clean it off her, some catch her in a clip and let her dry. Haven't done it but the safest, easiest and least risky option seems to be to just lift the mesh cage a bit. No moving her, chances of squishing or just altogether losing her. It takes something like 10 to 30 seconds for her to dry, lift the mesh off as she just Carrie's on her merry way.
Once again Danny you have nailed your video diary - your journey is almost a mirror image of mine - I'm guessing you live near a hospital too - nice lot of honey in supers I haven't had that success yet but I think I'm 5 weeks behind you - Very satisfying when you manage to catch a queen and mark her.
@@nigeltimms3582 ahh thank you so much for watching, It’s is very up and down and this is why I done a journey for you and so meany to see how it actually is in reality.. Everything and everyone is different obviously but it’s how you go about things and the advice give.. I’m hoping a lot of different people like myself learn from this and take on board what can happen and what you can do about it.. yes right next door to a hospital lol.. Was so happy for how it turned out in the end with hive 1 and the queen cells I left as I never now where it was actually going to go as like I always say I’m new to this too… Lessons learnt for next year for sure and I will continue with this journey for as long as I keep bees so stay tuned.. Don’t forget there was the June gap so be patient it will come.. Now that hive 1 as swarmed I’m now down by half so it’s a long road to maybe getting a supper filled like that again but up side we are still only in the beginning on July.. Best of luck buddy keep me posted on how you’re getting on.👍
That was another great professional video, thanks for posting. Glad you got the new queen marked, she may take a while to start laying. My eyesught is not brill but do you th😮ink it might have been capped stores in the brood box 47.30 rather than capped brood? Perhaps the colony didnt actually swarm, but just a supersedure? Good idea with the nucs, they will overwinter well. Look forward to your updates😊
@@eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 thank you so much glad you enjoyed it. Yes that possible could be capped stores and I was so lucky with the queen lol. Times like then is when I’m glad I recorded it so I could go back and follow her to make sure she went back into the hive
Just started bee keeping and found you videos. Very good info. Thanks. 1 thing for me the music is very off putting. Very repetitive. But have still subscribed. Thanks. And best of luck with your bees.
Actually yeah fair point iv only just noticed that on this video lol.. it’s the only one that plays like that through the video, all the rest is just a little in the very beginning…. Not only new to beekeeping but new to filming lol, the editing is a hole lot better now..
Hi Danny yet another great video diary - I tried that type of the queen bee catcher but didn't get on with it as it difficult to see what happening under the chamber, instead I got hold of push in ring type with a plastic mesh and it was really successful
I enjoy your down to earth delivery, it’s refreshing. I didn’t even know I was interested in bees until I started watching your journey. Cheers for taking the time to share 😁
Enjoyed that. Thanks for posting. Are you planning to do brood and a half on all your colonies, I know there are pros and cons. I guess you will give the swarm in the nuc some space soon, will you put then in a full sized box or add an extension to the nuc. Look forward to your updates😊
Ahh thank you for watching, yes I will do brood and a half on my hives and not so sure as it is a swarm so atm there is nothing other the. Empty frames, 21 days from the queen laying eggs so that’s most of July gone and forages dying mean wile so I was hoping I maybe able to do this as a winter nuc… I’ll have to see how it goes I may have to get extension to it if need be
Hi danny, good video mate, probably would of removed the unhatch queen cell as you had just released a new queen in the hive. Cant wait to see how they get on in your next video, hope all goes well 👍🐝
That was a great professional video, ta for posting. Personally i think you did the right thing releasing the virgin back in. She looked good, the timings for hatching can cary a day or so either side. If the colony is not happy with her, then they will finish with her, but i recon she is ok. She is likely to kill any other queens in cells, so dont worry about that supersedure cell.
Also to say you are really good with your bees. It's good you have two colonies as that gives you lots of options! It might be a while before the Virgin mates and starts laying. 😊
Ahh thank you so much, that’s what I’m hoping she went and done so fingers crossed… not going back into that hive until another 7 days so that would had been at total of 14 days since this video… Given her time to do all what she needs to with out me bothering her/them..👍
Just subscribed. Been working on my bees today, boy it's hot in the suit. That was defo not your swarm but they may have been attracted by the smell of your hives.
So just confirm to me you've hatched a queen but leaving another queen cell in there that's also due to hatch? Would it not be worth either destroying the other queen cell or moving it into a nuc?
Well iv read that she being the first hatched can go and kill sister queens wiliest there still in there combs .? Like I say all through my videos im only a beginner so im only going by what iv learned so iv left her to see what happens to be fair, that first queen cell I left in the beginning i feel should of hatched by now and it hadn’t so spun me out a bit… 👍
New subscriber, if you leave cells when you've a virgin queen hatched you can get caste swarms, the first queen out doesn't always seek and kill others, they can just leave with some of the bees
@@angelamitchell7531 ahh thanks for watching, as it goes they swarmed yesterday but luckily I managed to collect them … lots of lessons learnt.. certainly be doing things differently next year
@@dcleal1 glad you managed to get them, that's mighty. Looking forward to following your journey, we're 5 years in now and I think I'm only getting on top of things now 😀
Why do you think that hive did not issue a swarm? I believe it did. Checking in one week will not tell you anything. That virgin needs 12 to 14 days to start laying. 6 or 7 to sexually mature, a mating flight, and 6 or seven more for her eggs to develop. Checking before that puts her at risk. I recommend you wait 3 weeks. That way your inexperienced eyes will see some brood. Seeing the first eggs laid is very difficult.
I can’t see that the swarm was from my 2 hives as hive 1 still has the queen, hive 2 still had the queen cells even though I took all them out other then 1 and there still a hole hive of bees and frames of honey so it’s telling me they never swarmed from that hive too… Oh and yes I will not go into that hive now what with the virgin queen in it for minimum of 2 weeks now, thought I said that in the video… ? Maybe I never lol.. swarm all good atm 4.7 miles away so bringing them back late next week and can’t wait too look in there to see the queen..👍
Thank you so much for watching and yes it’s one big learning curve for us all lol… Defo if it’s a virgin queen would be best to leave a couple of weeks, I’m going to do the same
Hi Danny - a really interesting video again - I thought bee keeping would be relaxing but on my last inspection I found a piping queen which meant only one thing - I think the key thing as a new bee keeper for me is knowing what action to take when you spot something out of ordinary - I am going to leave them for a couple of weeks in case the queen I found is a virgin queen
Quite possibly, hard to tell really, can’t wait to get it back home and look in there, thought is my bees but on inspection of my hives it turns out not to be lol… posting hive inspection soon.. Very interesting must watch…. 👍
Why would you want to make up two nucs after your hive has created queen cells? One nuc is a backup for the brood box. A brood box full of bees with one queen cell left in it will likely as not produce a new laying queen. But what if that process fails? You are five weeks down the line and have a box of bees with no brood and no queen - so what then ? If you have a brood box with a laying queen in it you unite that with your desperate box of bees - much quicker results than adding a frame of brood. Two nucs at current prices are worth around £300 to £400. So given that your box with it's one queen cell does produce a queen and both your nuc boxes do too you have made up for the loss of honey in that box.
Agreed and hopefully that don’t fail. If it was to fail then I would buy a queen and to be fair I was one touch of a button on Sunday of buying a mated queen to help the situation but it wasn’t turning up until Thursday and the weather Thursday and over the weekend isn’t great and didn’t wonna chance not being able to put her in the hive..🤦♂️, good old British summer time..
I think you passed on a great opportunity. You could have done a week nuc split for insurance or, better yet, split over a double screen board. The goal is to increase your chances of getting a great queen back. You also could have given those cells to other beekeepers who have the resources to make splits. You threw away better cells than someone can graft.
Yeah but like I say I’m very new to this so there will always be lots of different advice from a lot of different people unfortunately and very grateful to here everyone’s different opinions and to be fair 1 if the weather wasn’t forecast to be crap on the Thursday (yesterday) I would had bought a queen and introduced her and probably done one split with queen cell in a nuclear, but unfortunately on last Sunday when I was going to buy the queen I couldn’t get her until the Thursday (yesterday) and yes the weather was very wet when I got home from work so it wouldn’t had worked out and that was the reason behind why iv done it this way and hopefully it all goes to plan… If it don’t work out then I will 100% buy a queen and introduce her ..At the same time yesterday I had to rush my dog to the vets due to a spine injury so head was all over the place so somtimes things happen for a reason but like I say I’m learning and all the different advice I get I will store in my head for another time coz I’m pretty sure there will be lol…👍
