Thanks for these last vids. I'm contemplating getting one that isn't running properly and have no idea what it is. I used to be a diesel mechanic and have never touched bikes, but might be a winter project

I absolutely love mine! 2003, black, custom 2-teir seat which looks sooo much better and just makes the side on profile a million times more beautiful - she's a grouchy ol'cow, but she's mine, and I love her! I just wish I could find an affordable rack so I could go touring with a box on the back :'(
I'm with you my friend, I will be looking for an older Strom myself soon, I'm in the Philippines at The moment and coming back in few weeks, in the past I have owned 3 of these bikes , 2 of the 650 and one of the 1000, it's been a few years since I rode one but I have never forgotten the really good rides I had aboard them, for sure I think the most comfortable bikes in this segment and even other more touring segments, in the end you just can't go wrong with the Strom,👍😎👍😎👍😎
I just bout myself a red 2000 Daytona t595/955i in mint condition! I love it! Great bikes! Spare parts are a bitch though... And to check your oil level you need the wife to assist... 😂
@@openroadmoto You should have bought it! After 10 years of absence (not riding a bike), this was what I stumbled upon... and bought it directly. I'm the 3rd owner. The guy I've bought it from bought the bike from his father in law. Full service history. Garaged. Well treated and maintained with only 34k (km) on the clock. Of course I had to do some maintenance, oil, plugs, filter, brake fluid and pads, changed the clutch cable and oiled the throttle cable... Planning on doing the throttle bodies this week. Great hobby those bikes 😉
My brother had a 2003 in yellow new. Toured in France no problem. I bought a 2005 Tiger 955i last year for relaxed touring, Fast enough, super smooth and plenty of storage with big top box & factory panniers. Wish I bought one years ago. I often rode the A39 when I lived in Devon.
@@openroadmoto maintenance on an older vehicle is always an issue. I've been lucky with all my old bikes. Made sure i service them on time and they never let me down. Happy riding!
Great video. Funny my last bike was a Triumph 955 Sprint and while i loved it, i am looking now for a more upright relaxed riding position to do long distance touring. The choice is either Vstrom or Vstrom😊 because im looking for dependability and comfort. Im still conflicted on the 650 or 1000. The wife is on the heavy side. She wont read this 😊. Im researching fuel consumption at the moment. Id love to know the 1000 Dl is like. I subscribed!
😂 You live life on the edge, wives have eyes everywhere 🤣. The 1000 is great. Couldn't be happier. It ticks my boxes of not being too expensive and all the parts being "tried and true" along with plenty of spares. As long as you have a decent inside leg and you're reasonably strong for low speed work you should be fine. I dropped mine recently due to loosing balance. Luckily the crash bars saved it from damage. If all I did was narrow twisty roads and I was a smaller person I might look to the 650.
Had a 15 year lay off from biking amd just picked one of these up for 2500 and only 18,000 miles. Last bike was a speed triple nut I am 58 now and my naked day's are over. Love this bike. Handles like a dream and has tons of power of required. Tip top review.
Great review, I am now 65, 6ft 1in, not as flexible as 20 years ago. Is the riding position generous, ie legs not to bent or cramped. I would like to do a UK tour before I kick the bucket and it looks like it could be perfect. Best wishes 2U.
There was an article about a 1st gen DL 1000 that had 400,000 plus miles on it. Original engine. Supposedly the odometer stops at 200K miles, so he replaced it and went thru another one. This guy rode the hell out of it. 100 miles commute each day for years plus long trips.. I've personally seen a DL650 that had 300 k miles on it. Original engine. The new Pstrom might be better off road, but it's engine will never last 1/2 as long.
Had a yellow 2000 RS when I was in Australia, where I lived at the time. It was great. A little over 400km tank range, and decent at everything. Not superb at any one thing, but a good all rounder. I felt it actually made me a better rider because it was so neutral. I want another one, but in orange this time. My only complaints were the seat, which grew teeth for me after 30 minutes, and the engine had a minor fluctuation when doing a steady speed.
That's a fair summing up. Since trying a few bikes I prefer my V Strom 1000 engine for normal riding on the road. The RS is a fine bike though. It's a great way to get a lot for not much money. Safe riding!
I went by my local Moto Repair Shop to make a offer on one of their used trade-ins, a Big Brawny Bandit 1200S , but it got sold so I reluctantly considered from two remaining ADV 1000's , a Ducati Multistrada & a Vstrom. While the Duc was tempting I decided to test ride Suzuki's ADV UNDERDOG & fell in Serious Like! It already had a older Slip Streamer Touring Windscreen with laminar lip , a comfortable Sargent Seat & rear-set Bar Risers. The upright riding position practically begs for more miles. The real revelation though, was in the Canyons where the extra broad torque curve makes Mountain passes quickly flow past & the ample suspension provides capable handling allowing me to keep pace with sport bikes in the Twisties. I couldn't resist such a "well rounded package" for such a "steal of a deal" so I gladly added it to my garage. It's probably the best all-around street bike deal on the planet! I've added "peg droppers" & Delkevic S.S. Oval Mufflers to it.
You've pretty much covered how I feel about the bike, glad you're pleased with yours. Just in the process of fitting a new chain, sprockets and a pair of Pirelli Angel GT's. Stay safe!
Go for 2002 or later as there is a problem with the sprag starter clutch. earlier models had the clutch in the middle of the engine and a real pain to change. I have a 2002 st and replaced the clutch in an hour. The clutch has an upgrade to a much larger unit, cost £350.00 in 2020, Another tip is to always keep the battery fully charged, excessive wear on the sprag is caused by low battery when starting.
I am waiting for my first RS to be delivered, at a cost of 750 including the delivery charge. I am looking forward to comparing it to the three previous ST versions I have owned, all costing the same or less.
I picked up my 2007 about two months ago (May 2023). I'm in Alberta, Canada. When I got the bike, it had 34,000 KM (just over 20,000 miles) and came with Givi adjustable windscreen, Givi panniers, crash bars , the rear passenger rest/storage compartment, 12 volt accessory with additonal plug for heated suit, new tires and the original windscreen. I paid $4,200 Canadian, or about $3100 U.S.
I paid £2850 with 36000 miles and no history. Also not that clean and in need of some tyres. But it's solid! Keyboard warriors seem to think you can get them cheaper but here in a remote part of the UK there's not much to look at.
Picked up my well optioned 40k mile 2005 DL1000 for $3k in 2018 and have added a Fork Brace, Peg Droppers , Delkevic Mufflers & New tires ... Along with oil & filter changes + 1 new battery , and have enjoyed 5 + yrs of trouble free motorcycling so far. Ride On Brother !!!
Had a yellow 2000 one when I lived in Australia and loved it. Sold it to move back to Canada, and now I want another one. Orange or yellow again. Love those colours. I found that bike to be a great all rounder. It was so neutral at everything, that it made me a better rider. And the tank range was fabulous. My only complaint was the stock seat grew teeth after about 45 min of riding. Oh, and aftermarket upgrade parts are hens teeth.
Is the whine sound that comes with acceleration normal? I just bought an 04 sprint rs and it's a very noticeable sound. I love the bike but the sound makes me paranoid lol
The Sprint RS, is the "Lost Triumph" so glad some one did a video. I have a 2004 with the single sided swing arm and TOR carbon silencer. The sound turns heads like a Ducati does at one half the price and none of the maintenance. Mine weighs with a full tank of fuel 490lbs. I love mine over the Sprint ST 955i. For a 58" wheel base it does really well in the corners and at above 100 mph high way, its stable and quiet. If you compare the geometry and power to weight to the Sprint ST 1050, its identical in geometry, same power and 40lbs wet weight lighter. Its not a 425 lbs / 175hp super bike but it gets you close enough for the average rider. Lots of seat of the pants power for my needs.
That's a nice combination. Although the single sided swing arm is heavier it does improve the look and the can is a nice touch. There are plenty of vids on the new stuff. I like finding bargains like the Sprint RS
I have the Sprint RS 955i (120bhp) and a Daytona 955i (150bhp) and I can honestly say the sprint is more fun to ride, it has bags of power all within legal road speeds, and the daytona you have to rev it a bt more to get the same thrills, and you doing 20 miles an hour more than you would be on the sprint. Even though the power is more on the daytona, it seems to lack the fun-punch the sprint gives. And the sprint does like to have it engne reved. BTW the engine managment light could be your fuel sender unit, it goes bad and throws a code, and even if you get a new one they seem to have two types which is eacy to mix up with different impeadences..
I never got to the bottom of the light. It went away and I sold the bike. I was tempted by a 955i Daytona that's quite local to me. But I currently have a GSXR which is now being sold with a V-Strom 1000 taking its place. The sporty stuff was an itch I needed to scratch but I've decided to try something else.
Nobody waiting for this review? What are you on about, lol? I had to go low budget when I bought my current bike. Went with a Daytona 955i, which is pretty similar to your bike of course. Some new tires and a 'proper' handle bar instead of clipons and I'm happy as can be 🙂.
😂 Yeah, there is a group of us that aren't at the cutting edge. The Triumphs of this age are pretty good value. I was looking at a 955i tiger but I just picked up a 1000 V-Strom instead.
I bought an immaculate 2003 model with 12000 miles for £1570 . I bought it to use for track days (novice group) . It performs well and pound for pound is excellent value !
Agreed, along with the ST much under rated and a real bargain currently, just blew that didn't I. After years of Steamers and T300's, it's comfortable, versatile and easy to live with.
I’m laughing a lot at this 😂😂 but I actually am genuinely here cuz I just bought one So I’m now looking at the reviews As you do …. Impulsively buy something and watch reviews later 🤣🔥🤩😎🏍️
I owned this bike for almost 3 years. Paid 2500$ CDN pre-Covid for a 2000 model year in mint condition. I put 35 000kms in less than 3 years. It's a lovely bike and with proper tuning, an exhaust and more agressive sprockets, it's a completely different animal. My friends couldn't get ahead with their modern MT09s and Z1000. It's a very malleable machine. I could wear the tires to the edges and move at ludicrous speeds with great stability or I could short shift and cruise along with my girlfriend at the back. Even did some mild offroading and dirt roads rather comfortably with it. Most impressive, no matter how hard you ride it, it would always maintain a low fuel consumption, baffling. Now I ride a KTM 990 SMT because I needed a more rugged bike but I will always remember the Sprint RS.
Hi Phil, sounds like the RS did you a great service there. I am very pleased with mine, if I can't "upgrade" next year I'll still be happy with what I have
Thanks for uploading. I bought one of these last year. I'm fairly new to biking and this is my first big bike but it's great. Cheap to buy, not too intimidating but it's capable well beyond my abilities so it's ideal to grow in to and learn the craft. Would highly recommend a well looked after one. As for the looks, I find the belly pans make a big improvement.
Thank you and I'm dreadfully sorry about the quality of my videos. A better one should be on the way. Congrats on the purchase. I agree with all your points. I hope to change it next year but if I can't afford it I'll still have plenty of enjoyment with this one.
