The popular Sirio Megawatt 4000 CB Radio Antenna is put up against at the 9ft quarter wave Tank Whip! Which one would work better for hill top DX and talking locally? There's only one way to find out! With the help of some local radio operators plus some surprising sporadic E DX conditions over the recent weekends I was able to get on air and see what others thought of the antennas. The weather started off well but soon deteriorated over the bank holiday weekend when I recorded the video. This isn't a scientic comparison - it's more to do with what was really seen and heard on air.
Both antennas are available from CB retailers such as Knights in the UK.

1/4 Wave Tank Whip - www.kcb.co.uk/contents/en-uk/...
My thanks go out to Jason in Bridlington and Kev in Scarborough - two local stations involved in the testing. This was conducted over a 2 week period as the results were so close we tried doing this from a couple of different locations to check the findings.

I bought the 9 ft 1/4 tank whip today, tried it with a Thunderpole T800 c b radio. I also hooked up a Thunderpole T X handset. The handset actually pulled the signal in by an extra 2 pound on the meter. And the bloke that was transmitting also sounded clearer. Very surprised. The day before I used the Thunderpole T800 and a Thunderpole orbiter on a 7 inch magmount had a nice clear radio check from a bloke that was 20 miles away. All on F M frequency.

Hi there, I'm using Sirio Turbo 5000. Great antena. Used with CRT 9900 last week (top of Beacon Hill, Halifax)and reports I have are 5/7 in Clifton USA , 5/5 Sao Paulo

My Sirio 4000 arrived today. A shame I'm too busy to get out and play this weekend. Soon though. I'm new to to CB, so lots of things to figure out, but I'm willing to fumble my way through. I'm only the other side of the Wolds to you and have been going to a couple of spots near Garroby Hill for the PMR 8@8 net on a Sunday. Maybe well make contact one day. Al

Thank you for sharing , it's really interesting that there's not much performance difference between the two , but considering the purchase price there's a huge difference between the two . I think that the Sirio is ideal for mobile & the 9 ft tank whip would be ideal for static camping / campsites & so forth .

Glad you enioyed the video! Yes it's a real surprise that there isn't much difference between the two. You certainly wouldn't want to drive around with the tank whip on the roof although I know some people do (obviously not using a mag mount!). I've also since tried the Scarlett Warrior since I made this video and this is slightly shorter than the Sirio and works pretty similar. If you have a look at my other videos you'll see the review. Thanks!

Try placing a long car antenna 1/4 horizontally above the ground, the ones used by the military to perform a short DX ionospheric reflection over a short distance of 50-200 km. This, of course, requires specific propagation conditions. Generally, military antennas are 1/2 wave (320 cm), but there is a band of about 45 MHz. They have strings for horizontal attachment.

Try a hard mount with the quarter wave or both, the mag mount acts like a capacitor with the gap between the mag mount and car roof and is nowhere near as effective, the quarter wave needs a much better ground connection and once hard mounted and a better connection to ground is established you will see a massive difference in performance from the tank whip and the swr will be much lower too. But I can understand anyone not wanting to drill a car roof, just saying the difference in performance would be night and day especially once a quarter wave has a good counterpoise.
@Transmission1
@Transmission1 2 года назад
Thanks for that. All very interesting. I had suspected this with the quarter wave when I measured the SWR. They do need a better ground than you can provide through a magnetic mounting hence why the Sirio Megawatt 4000 is a much better choice for anyone wanting a fuss free antenna and more bandwidth all round. I've had the quarter wave for years after someone recommended it for hilltopping. I've just never mounted it properly ;)

@@Transmission1 Btw i have a Lincoln 2+ rev 3 set and i can't fault it on any band and always had great feedback using the standard microphone, probably one of the best export rigs available today, i put it on parr with the McKinley and Stryker 955 which i also have, in my experience I've never had any issues using any of them, but i do like the Lincoln 2+rev 3 and to break the hearts of the nostalgic few out there it beats the Lincoln 1 hands down.
@Transmission1
@Transmission1 2 года назад
Yep, I agree, The Lincoln 2+ is a cracking radio. I've never had a bad audio report on this rig and people always seem surprised when I tell them what I'm running and it's just on the standard hand mic. I'd love to add a Stryker 955 to my collection but the prices they are selling for right now are a bit crazy. Maybe one day! BTW I subscribed to your channel and enjoyed the SWR meter review - that's class for the money. 73 Simon

@@Transmission1 thank you for subscribing your support is much appreciated, yes that little meter is a fantastic bit of kit.. I forgot to mention that the meter also registers high SWR too, so it will bleep if the SWR is high at 2.1 and give a continuous warning bleep if the SWR is above 3.0.. for the money it's excellent.. I seen it last week on a 24 hour sale for £23.99 free p&p. The 955 is incredible on ssb it can hear and pick stations up that even my Yasue cannot even register.. they are a bit expensive but keep your eye out on eBay there is a guy in London who must import them new and sells them for £300 which is the cheapest I've seen them go for.. still expensive but cheaper than all the others I've seen. I did a short live stream with the 955 last month it's up on my channel just listen to how nice the receive is on SSB they sound super nice. I think on that live I made a contact around 28-29 minutes in.

You can buy them from sirio. It's a SO239 to 3/8" adaptor. Had it for years but they are still available now.

Good quality trimag base and tankwhip swr hardly moves on reflect . Been using tankwhip few years and find them superior to my sirio 4000 , 5000 , president colarado , Wilson 1000 etc. Then again I always say on air as I test mobile antennas regularly that what ever works best for the individual is the best antenna to use . Cheers for the interesting video sir . Stay safe and good dx hunting . Marty 68WR048 / 100 % mobile.

I was disappointed by the big 1/4 wave antenna sold as "Paris-Dakar" In France. I used this monster one month and go back to Colorado and other 2 meters long cb antenna on the center of my roof.

I did a "test" (I'm using that word very loosely) between a Sirio HP4000 and a full length 1/4 wave. What I did was find a weak, scratchy FM signal and listened to the signal, swapping the aerials. The tankwhip reception was scratchier than the Sirio. I know there was nothing scientific about what I did and I used the S meter between my ears. Theory says the tankwhip should have been better but in this case, no Cheers, Tony

Using the Sirio 5000 & 4000 antenna I get good results & its simple easy set-up via mag mount,My 9ft tank whip via car body mount & decent earth/bonding is 2 s points advantage over the 4000.

Thanks. That seems to be the case - the tank whip needs proper grounding in order to perform at its best and definitely not the mag mount!

to compare antennas you need to have the same SWR because you have power lost. The higher SWR gets the less your radio hears and gets out ,

Can't believe how poor the SSB is on the Lincoln 2+ with strong signals, looks like President haven't learnt from their previous mistakes. The original Lincoln 2 was so poor they offered to repair them for free, I've got one here, and after the repair it sounds much better than the new + version does 🤦 Antenna wise I've tried loads of different ones over the years and I've found the Half Breed to be the best for performance and bandwidth. When static I sometimes use a 7ft firestick which does work better (1 or 2 s-points) but is far too big to use while in motion.
@Transmission1
@Transmission1 2 года назад
I think the Lincoln II is like most modern radios, they all have a tendancy to overload with strong signals and it's usually a case of just knocking the RF gain back sightly. It makes you wonder if the people who design the radios ever actually use one themselves! Speaking of the Lincoln II+ I can't fault the radio in any other way. It gets great audio reports on the standard mic from everyone and it's absolutely bang on frequency and never drifts at all. So whatever else they did wrong they got a lot of things right! :)

that syrio is not 7/8 wave not even 1/4 wave just a loading coil at the base of the antenna manufacturer’s telling lies as usual
