I'm fused all over, in my fifties, and determined to be fit. I've had 15 surgeries including one on each ankle, four knee (all on my left knee), four back surgeries (two of them fusions, now fused from L-3 through S-1), three shoulder surgeries (two left, one right), one neck fusion (C-3 through C-5), and one toe fusion (right big toe). There will probably be more...is what it is.

Maybe a couple years late here, but I am also (or WAS also) a stomach sleeper, which I blame for part of the disc damage which led me to neck surgery about a month ago. But I mentioned my prone sleep position to my doctor at one point and long story short, I ended up on CPAP, because I couldn’t breathe properly on my back. And nothing will change your sleep habits like having to adjust to cpap. But it has been life changing. Not constantly falling asleep while driving #1. You might look into it. Cheers.

Thank you so much for sharing. You're inspiring and giving people hope. I'm 36 y.o, and I've been suffering from neck and lower back problems. 4 herniated discs in my cervical spine (c3-c7) and two in the lumbar spine (L4-S1). I'm a personal fitness trainer and amateur bodybuilder. Had L5-S1 microdicectomy L4-L5, L5-S1 in May 2022, which had helped at the time and then another dicectomy and laminactomy with insertion of dynamic stabilizator in August 2023 L5-S1 Unfortunately, I have been suffering from upper and lower body radiculapathy in both my arms and legs, shoulders basically almost all my body. Atrophied muscles all over upper and lower body. It's like my muscles are shrinking day by day. It's so scary and frustrating The surgeon says I might be needing cervical fuaion C3-C6 and C7 laminactomy. Also, if symptoms of the lower body won't go away, it is a fusion at L4-S1 too. I don't know what to do with my life and my so so scared im ruind forever. Thinking of being fused and disable for the rest of my life is something i can't think of. Im out of air, can't sleep, eat, and work as normal. It seems like your life after all you've been through is OK now, and you're doing fine. What are the disabilities/problems/interferences in your daily life? What can you no longer do? Sorry for this long message ‏‪23:28‬‏
@FusedandFit
@FusedandFit 28 дней назад
Man, sorry you are going through all of this. It can be so depressing and defeating at times. Out of nowhere, I'm having horrible nerve pain/fire shooting down the front of my left leg. It's probably an L2-L3 herniated or at least bulging disc. I haven't had that kind of pain for years. I share this because it goes to your question of what can't I do anymore? I've never been into running (outside of sprinting), but have been trying to get ready to run a 5k. My wife and I ran that distance a month ago and my back has been hurting every since. The nerve pain is new. I can't run on hard surfaces like that. Jogging in a treadmill has been fine. I really don't jump anymore. I'm just over 5'7" and used to jump high enough to dunk on a 10' rim. But that's ok. I don't load up my back door squats, just body weight for that. I also have knee problems, so my only leg workouts are biking/hiking/getups. There is so much I can do that I try to focus on now. The hardest part in all of this is the mental battle and frustration. Accepting that my body just can't do what it used to is tough. I'm 53 so between my neck, back, knees, and shoulders, with my age, inger more limited by the day. Building muscle is a real challenge. I can't compare myself with you, I've never been a body builder, I've never been as disciplined as you. I've had a great physique at times but that is difficult now too. I should probably look into TRY by now, but haven't. I think you need to keep finding ways to adapt to what you can do. Keep moving and improvising. Also, find a higher purpose for your life, by that I mean, be sure you nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Listen to your soul, it knows what will make you happy in life despite the physical challenges. I do not believe you will be disabled, but your limits will (have) changed. There are still physical outlets I believe that can allow you to feel fulfilled. I don't know what those are, but you are not washed up at this point. I'm curious what other hobbies and interests you have, physical and otherwise? Let me know. Hang in there bradda!

@@sarahgriffin6150 it is normal to have swallowing issues. In my day of video, or the one following, I talk about that a bit. I had major swallowing issues. Most swallowing issues only last a few days two a couple weeks. I had swallowing issues for much longer. I still struggle with carrots and almonds. I drove after six weeks. You can't safely rotate yourself enough to look both ways at stop signs and so forth. That's too much twisting and rotating on a newly fused neck. Dont be afraid to talk to social worker at hospital or clinic to explain your personal circumstances. I held off surgery for years for various reasons. Myophepy of the spine could be a bad and permanent outcome if postpone to long. For sure it is never going to get cheaper for surgery and chances are you will never have enough money or arrangement set up. Vertigo balance problems and vision problem can happen if you don't get stenosis of spine fixed not to mention neuropathy of upper and lower extremity. @@seanleeroy5239 sorry you're having to deal with this too. Sounds like an awesome career. My voice was impacted for a while, maybe for like 8 months or so. It's back to normal I believe. I was clearing my throat a ton for the first few months. My voice was deeper for some time and hitting high notes while singing was impossible for 8 months or so. When trying to hit higher notes my voice would either crack or make no sound at all, it was really strange. Conversely, the lower voice was kind of cool. My voice has always been mid to lower anyway, but it was lower all the time for several months. Most people I know, by far, had no issues after a week or two. I believe your vocal cords would just adapt either way. The worst cases end up doing some speech therapy and steroids of sorts to correct the cords. Very small percentage though. As far as physical activities, my back gives me problems at times, but my neck rarely if ever slows me down. Considering all my fusions and other surgeries, I'm doing really well and stay very active. Good luck, and please keep me posted.

You will know when the right time is to have it done. I could have put it off longer I think, but it would've been risky, and my quality of life had tanked. For me, I'm very glad I had it done. Obviously did not love having it done, but happy it is done. Good luck, and keep me posted.

Had C5 C6 C7 5 weeks ago. I'm still in healing mode, but the pain is minimal now, except physical therapy is kicking my butt!!! Ice and ibuprofen for me... I don't know how anyone can get addicted to these pain meds. They are brutal on my system. Thanks for sharing your experience 2 years out. You've given hope that I'll be back in shape in no time. I hope you won't need anymore fusions 😊

I'm also lumbar fused from L3-L5 (two separate fusions), a total hip replacement and looking at ACDF(I see the surgeon tomorrow and we'll see how many levels). Keep doing this. I had C3-C4 and C4-C5 fused 12 years ago. It was perfect with fast recovery and 12 years of great range of motion and no pain. Three months ago problems started again along my neck, upper should blade and right arm. MRI results with severe, severe, severe on three places. My doctor referred me to original neurosurgeon and I got an appointment within two weeks. Wish me luck, I will have no hesitation of getting more fusions if neurosurgeon recommends it! 10:03

The after surgery even is it was successful is the slight sensation of difficulty swallowing, you cannot lift nothing if you can help it. The scar tissue formation will bother you months after surgery. Be aware the levels above and below where they fix will go bad, and even the stenosis surgically removed can go Back to the same levels operated.😢

@FusedandFit
@FusedandFit 3 месяца назад
I wasn't "allowed" to for a few weeks by my doctor. You should not rotate your head side to side for several weeks after the surgery. Obviously when you're driving you have to. You may be able to adapt by rotating enough with your waist instead of your neck. The more you turn your head right after the surgery the less of a chance you give the fusion to actually take.

You’re such an inspiration . I’m about to have my fusion , soon. I was warned to ice and elevate leg. You didn’t mention using any walking devices like the clutch or knee scooter. Did you use any device to keep pressure off your foot?
@FusedandFit
@FusedandFit 4 месяца назад
Thanks for chiming in. Good luck with yours! I was on crutches for a week and a half I believe. Also, I was told to walk by not pressing off the ball of the foot that was operated on (my right foot). So, I would kind of shuffle step once I got off crutches. I would bring my feet side by side with each step, by leading with my bad foot then bringing my left foot to my right foot. Hope that makes sense. And yes, for the first several days I was off it a lot, keeping elevated and icing it. I didn't use pain meds because I am super sensitive to all of them and allergic to many of them. I did try ibuprofen some, but still not a lot of that. Anyway, hope this helps a little. Again, good luck. I'm almost 7 months out now and it's doing really well. Just feels like a weird stuff toe now. I jumped down out of my truck the other day and landed on my tip toes, and that kind of zinged my toe, but that went away soon enough. Keep me posted on yours.

I appreciate you explaining this . I’m a very active person . I didn’t want to lose the flexibility. Some mentioned using a knee scooter until I can put pressure on my foot. You mentioned the toe feeling stiff. Do you know if the feeling is temporary or permanent? I will let you know how my surgery goes. Thanks!
@FusedandFit
@FusedandFit 4 месяца назад
@@Bone783 I think the feeling will be pretty permanent. Since it's fused, it is stiff, so it totally makes sense it will feel stiff. I think it's something I'm getting more used to, though. It doesn't seem to bother me as much, it's just annoying I think. I live in a hilly area and did a long walk this morning going up some steep hills (prepping for some big hikes) and it didn't bother me hardly at all, just annoyed me since it feels different. All of what I'm experiencing is far better than the intense pain I had before. Same thing with my back and neck fusions...none of them feel perfect, but all of them feel much better than before the fusions. Once a joint is fused it's never the same, it's impossible for it to be, but with slight adaptations I've been able to remain active. Barring anymore injuries, I believe I'll hit most of my fitness goals by the end of this month. The toe fusion will change some things for you, but it won't stop you. Good luck!!

@@Bone783 I was at about a 5-7 for about 1.5 years and treated it with steroid shots that brought it down to 4-5 for a few weeks. Then sat at 9 to 10 consistently for just under a year. If I would have had it done sooner there would have been enough cartridge to just clean things up without having to fuse. My friend hat that done (at the moment don't recall what that procedure is called), and while the healing somehow takes a little longer you retain your flexibility. Eventually he will have to get it fused, but he probably bought himself another ten years before it's done. Anyway, I was apprehensive, too, that is normal. The pain got to the point I couldn't do much, now I'm doing all of it again, at least what I want to. In any case, you will know when you're ready.
