Big thing - the season 1 finale taught Pike that sometimes an enemy can't be negotiated with. That showing weakness will invite more violence, even war. But that's what Pike is facing right now. Retreat, likely without choice, and escalate this conflict further.
Possibly the best episode of SNW and the most popular.... because of Lower Decks... so.... let's take advantage of that and cancel lower decks!!! said anyone with any commercial sense whatsoever... not. I sometimes wonder who makes these decisions... do you have politicians on your staff Paramount?? jees 🙄
I love that we are being given rich backstories for TOS characters that no prior Star Trek iteration could provide. It places SNW in a class of it's own. The world it builds (fills in?) is the one we came to know in our first run around the cosmos 60 years ago (with no bloody A, B, C or D).
Season 1 Janeway started out naive and inexperienced, she had just received her fourth pip, having done multiple tours as a first officer where she would've dealt with minor disciplinary matters(lateness, poor report writing, poor uniform turn out, etc),rotas, overseen some meetings, run the ship for brief periods of time whilst the captain was absent. Being an observer in a commanding officer's summary hearing. Very likely, she would've been the one to read the officer his/her rights before sending them to their supervisor for advice before the hearing. But now, it's all on her to do it right; because if not, her supervisor will have her head if she doesn't. The initial tour was to go into Badlands of the Alpha quadrant, capture the Chakotay and the crew of the Val Jean and return them to Federation custody for trial that included interfering with Federation activities.
The season 1 Janeway we see here is a freshly promoted captain whose knowledge of the Borg was based on hypotheses because those who encountered the borg rarely lived to tell the tale; unless they were not a threat. She looks at Seven, understandably a little concerned when asked what has happened to the vessel. However when Seven efficiently explains what can be done to put Voyager back into temporal sync. Janeway develops slightly more respect, because she now has an answer as to why her vessel is in 37 different time frames and a potential plan.
If Prodigy gets a Season 3, I hope the USS Prodigy continues the goal of its predecessor: to fix the doors Voyager opened in the Delta Quadrant, particularly the Vaadwaur.
The Gorn were unknown to the Federation in this time period. And the doctor on Enterprise in the time of Captain Pike was quite an elderly man. Basically the show is all wrong.
One thing I like about the USS Prodigy is that its mission is addressing the circumstances that allowed the Maquis to exist: outer colonies being abandoned because the Federation focused on defending the main systems, so the Protostar is there to assist and aid those who feel they were left behind to fend for themselves
Hopefully the klingon empire and the federation killed all gorn in existence by chance because they are not presage unless their planet is threatened, kill them nevertheless
This show is exhilarating, poignant, and stirring. I very much hope we get more of this show, but if it does end here, it’s going out with one of the best endings in the franchise - fitting for one of the best series in the franchise.
