I thought this was magic at the time. Loved the graphics. I was 11 at the time, and read the books at the same time. Ah the memories. Warm and fuzzy. And the music from the movies really does me in. Takes me back to those magical times.
Yes but you didn't finish after you entered the secret room what happens then did you explore those other rooms too in the secret room after the credits to robinson whatever name who wanted credit etc wtf and it took you so long to get there. Also in my understanding it was the right side of the white castle, not the left where you put in the bridge to get out the other key but maybe that was the only thing i was confused about everything else i remembered except that room now but my god you must have mucked around with that bridge for ages like i did trying to get to other places. What amazes me is that I could travel through rooms and walls if i was eaten by a dragon then picked up by the bat but with all the ghostly entrances to other rooms never once did the bat enter that secret room so a combination of black and white keys of opening castles must be established first for it to open then?!?
This took me back! Melbourne House and the Hobbit probably influenced by lifelong interests more than any other childhood event. I can remember when a friend of my dad's from work brought a Spectrum 48k to our house, I must have been about 8 and loaded this game up. It blew my mind at the time and my dad bought a Spectrum and this game. It came with a copy of the book and started my love affair with books (and computer games) that lasts to this day. I can remember when Melbourne House released The Fellowship of the Ring that again, came with a copy of the book. I can still vividly remember the smell of the brand new pages, and reading it in bed at night after my mum had turned the light off, by using a recorder to turn my bed into a tent and using a torch. Even now, forty years later I still get taken back to this whenever I buy a new book with the same smell. I haven't seen this game for 40 years, but came upon a random article on the web as it's the 40th anniversary since its publication and they were interviewing the woman who coded it. I wanted to see if RU-vid had any videos of it and found yours. Thanks, for putting it up, I remembered every single animated scene once I saw them. One thing I realised though, is I don't think I ever completed it as I have no memory of coming back to Hobbiton and putting the treasure in the chest, I think I killed the dragon and just wondered around and around! So I've finally seen the quest complete 40 years later!
I still would like to see someone's top 10 from 1977-1980 games as if they went to college in 1980 and stopped playing after Space Invaders. I suppose some people must have played all those two-player games for hours with friends and relatives!
Ever since I got through that wall, I've been wondering what would happen if I could get through the other walls. Rom Hacking has the source code for the game, so I suppose I could hack me walk through walls cheat and find out.
The only other interesting thing regarding walls is using the bridge to go to the tops of the castles. Gold and White you can get back out, but Black you have to reset. Unfortunately, there's nothing to do there unless the bat dropped something off. Too bad. It would be interesting if there's one room you can't get to unless you were in the dragon's stomach and carried by the bat. So you'd either have to use the bat to get stuff from there or stick the magnet up to pull it down and to your screen.
First, the room the dot is in blinks like other rooms that have multiple items, suggesting something is different about it; in this case an extra item that doesn't respond to the magnet. Then if you explore the map for that room, you'll see there's a passage you can't get in until you use the bridge. Once you get the dot, you just carried it around with you to see if it did anything. Someone then found you could walk through that particular barrier if there was another item on the screen.
