How did I miss this video?! Man, glad I'm seeing this now. Ok, back to your regularly scheduled program (aka, watching this entire video)! More comments to follow ;-)
Thank you! I'm not sure if everything else is "easier," life is hard! But you certainly gain more confidence in yourself to do hard things when you finish a 200 miler!
You have a wonderful smile 😁. Great job! My love hate relationship with Candice is real 😅. I'll be attempting the bigfoot 200 for my 4th time in 2024, I have made it 131 miles twice, before missing a cutoff time. 🤞 that 2024 is my year to cross the finish line.
Thank you! Good luck at Bigfoot in 2024! You've got some grit to go back for a fourth try. Shoot me a DM if you want to talk 200's or anything that might help you prep for it. Best of luck!
Thank you for sharing this alternative route, I am planning to use this route to do the Needle next week. Do you have the gpx file for this route that you can share? Thank you!
Hi Eric, sorry I just saw this. We got our GPX file from trailrunproject.com at the link below. Hope your trek went well! www.trailrunproject.com/trail/7054598/cottonwood-creek-trail-861
Thanks man! It was beautiful out there. I was a bit surprised when that knee pain started in the late 70's.. It took away a lot of my momentum but happy I was able to finish!
Thanks a lot for the video. I'm doing 52M in two weeks and have concerns about the moister in my shoes. I did Black Canyon in February, and my blisters were complaining about their blisters at the end. I know it is too late but have you found any good solution to control the moister? I will put shoes and socks into each drop bag, but I want to know if I can do anything else. Have you solved this problem for yourself?
Hey - the best solution I've found is lots of sock and shoe changes. Looking back I should have either stopped at an aid station at Bighorn to let me feet, shoes and socks dry at a campfire. Or I should have changed shoes and socks 1-2 times. I think what happened to me could have been avoided but you live and learn. As a side note, I started using XOSkin socks which help. Roadrunner socks are solid too. But if you experience frequent blisters, I might also consider taping and lubing your feet pre-race. Hope that helps!
Hey nice vid! Looks awesome. I am researching on thru hiking this trail. How many miles did you average a day? You all every run out of water or were the spots pretty good? Thanks!
Hi - we completed the trail in 7 days, which averages out to about 25 miles per day. There were a few longer water carries but nothing too bad. We never ran out of water with lots of snowmelt in June. I would recommend downloading the TRT map on Farout/Guthook (whatever you refer to it as) to check on water sources, which will change depending on time of year you hike the trail.
Bighorn is not a lottery but it does sell out relatively fast. I believe registration opens in the summer/fall and sells out by the spring? But I'm not really sure. No application to run but it's a tough one so I'd still recommend going in with some ultra experience and experience running in hot temps. Hope that helps!
Pretty early! Lots more snow than I saw starting June 26th but doesn't look like it was any trouble. Looks like this year might be another story though!
Lol, it sounds like there has been a lot of snow in Tahoe this winter. Some of the snow drifts (not shown in the video cause we were busy trying not to slide down them) were pretty sketchy to cross. A little later in the season might be better next summer for sure.
Hey man great video of the TRT looks sick. I definately want to do it one day. I’m really bad with heights tho. didn’t seem like there was anything too crazy in your video I don’t mind like the 80 degree drop offs just don’t like cliffs. Do you think I could still do the TRT? Or maybe look at a different trail
Hi Chris, I think you'll be fine on the TRT, even if you don't like heights. This was my first thru-hike and it was a great experience. I would consider most, if not all of the trail to be class 1 terrain. There are no cliffs on the TRT. That said, in June when there is still snow, there were a few very short sections (namely when the TRT intersects the CDT) when snow drifts are steep and can be a bit dangerous to cross when there is a drop off on one side. You might want to consider hiking the trail late June/early July to avoid that.
Thank you Chad! There is something about running through the night and seeing two sunrises during a race that is special. I highly recommend doing it, even if it's just like hiking through the night, not necessarily in a race. Also, Joel was a great pacer. He kept the conversations interesting and me awake for sure! I recommend having a caffeine strategy before an event if you will be up all night though.
(14:20) I was going down that section when the storms were ripping, I was tucking under bushes when possible because of the hail. Congrats on a 27 hour finish, that’s amazing! It took me a bit longer! LOL! But I loved it and I’m going back again next year.
Thanks Curtis and congrats on your finish too! That must have been scary being on that section with storms in full force. I got dumped on during that section but no hail or lightening.
Yo man! Just watched the Mogollon video. I am signed up for this years race. I would love some advice on it. Im a well trained ultra distance guy. I just ran the black canyon 100k. This will be my first 100miler
@@travisradevski Just seeing this comment. I made a podcast episode (also on RU-vid) about Mogollon. I outline the course and advice for tackling the race pretty thoroughly there. Here's the link to the youtube video, but you can also find the episode on Spotify, Apple podcast, etc. if you want to listen while driving or cooking or something lol. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iGqfi7Ttu3w.html
Amazing job! Your finish time is incredible. It took me nearly 35 hours, but I did get my buckle! It’s amazing to relive those memories, that was not an easy course!
Thank you and congrats on your finish as well! That was a super tough course but a lot of fun and the buckle was well worth it. Props to you for gutting it out, even if it took a little longer!
loving your videos mate. Following in your footsteps at never summer, pawnee buchanan, and now planning a R2R2R. really helpful getting your POV on each
Hi David, thanks for following along! I really appreciate the positive feedback. Also, those are some awesome routes and races you are doing! Good luck with your running journey and let me know if you have any questions about any of those routes!
Hey - our TRT hike was June 9 - 15 this year. There was a decent amount of snow going counterclockwise up Relay Peak and when the TRT met the PCT. A bit cold some nights but overall a good time of year to go. Would recommend spikes if you go this time of year in the future.
Hi Lu, thanks for watching and happy you enjoyed the video! The Bear is so tough but so beautiful and the community that puts on the race is inspiring. I am hoping to go back within the next few years as well, maybe see you there!
You're amazing my friend! Glad you were frolicking through the woods at mile 57. Haha! Congrats on being 1st place. Almost seems like they weren't expecting anyone to finish yet. Not much of a welcoming party.
Thank you! And LOL, it was quiet on the track but there were a few volunteers on the lookout for finishers. Hard to blame people for not wanting to be up at before 5am on their Sunday though haha
AWESOME VID GUYS!!! Definitely heading to the TLRT next summer. Did you do the CT? Finished it SOBO/NOBO last year. I'm old so the TLRT looks like my speed. Thanks for sharing your adventure! By the way, I live in Denver. Would like to hook up for a beer and some trail Intel sometime.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video, it was a great hike! Dave has done the CT twice and has some great videos up about it but I'll actually be leaving for the CT for my first time within the next 2 weeks. DM me if you want to link up too.
Appreciate your video, watching from the Caribbean...and your mentioning "Fixing your feet" Is there any other book you'll recommend for PT exercises and preventing running injuries ? Thanks...
Hi Isaiah, Fixing your Feet is my go to book for foot related injuries. I don't have another book I go to for PT exercises; instead I recommend seeing a licensed PT who can help treat what you're dealing with. One ebook I have yet to read (but am interested in) is called the Resilient Runner by a PT named Ben Shatto. It looks like a good option to help people with running injuries who don't want see a provider though
Help me understand something please. I'm doing this hike in May and I'm less familiar with the North Kaibab so I was studying your video. Between 12:12 and 12:48 you look to be approaching the RedWall Bridge, which takes you from the west side of Roaring Springs Canyon over to the East side. BUT, at 12:57 (just a little bit later) your video shows what looks like another bridge and trail down in the canyon. What is this ? I didn't think there were any other bridges climbing out on the NK after the RedWall bridge. Thanks in advance.
Hi Sam, the bridge at 12:57 is the same bridge we had just crossed on the way up to the North Rim (shows from 12:12 to 12:48). I believe it is called Redwall Bridge that you're referring to.
Good question - there were a TON of mosquitos at the cottonwood creek trailhead. I wouldn't recommend camping there if you can find another spot because of that.
