Welcome! I'm Jason, an outdoor/ overland gear dork who really loves the industry. I've been camping since I was a kid and while I'm mostly in the Overlanding world now I was raised popup camper-ing and throughout college I was able to still enjoy my passion while I was on a tight budget. As I get older I enjoy a bit more of the nicer things while I'm out in the back country but I still find use for the budget gear that has withstood the test of time. You'll see a mix of both here.

I started RU-vid to share some of my years of knowledge about camping with everyone. I love learning new things in the comments section from people with great advice. New ideas are ALWAYS welcome! I'm here to share gear as well as taking you guys along for the ride when I go on adventures.

Born in the Appalachian mountains and moved out to Rockies a few years ago. I've learned that while it is somewhat different terrain, views in different locations people go out to the back country for the same reasons.

I bought the NAPA compressor, keep in a separate bag so i can move it around, added a 90/125psi shut off switch, a standard quick connection, and a single fill hose with a quick connect for the valve stem, also set up a quick connect power connector running off the same switch for my winch and have less then 1/2 what the ARB system is. Not saying that the ARB is not great, but if funds are limited you can put together a nice set up for relatively lower cost. Ran the system a few weeks ago while at the Hot Springs off Road park, worked great.

backpacking is isobutane, because the design of the cans acts as a support for your stove and doesn't tip, as well as the isobutane cans having a dry weight that is half of the propane canister. I have the flame king 5lb propane tank, and it is an excellent option. We camp with about 4-5 people with cooking and heating up water for dishwashing, and used about 1lb of propane per day, so it's safe to say for ordinary uses, count on .25 lbs per person per day on an ordinary camping trip. There are downsides to a 5lb tank. One is they cannot be exchanged if you enjoy the convenience of tank exchanges. Another downside is depending where you are, most places are only DOT regulated to fill 15/20 lb and above tanks, and this includes your Sams Club and Costco etc. The only place I've found to refill mine is a UHAUL, and they usually don't know how to price it, so I give them a $5 bill. The larger "RV" tanks as you say have much more added versatility of refilling much less, cheaper initial purchase price, potentially cheaper propane in filling at cheaper propane places that take this more standard sizing, you can bring the tank down to a smaller percent volume of the total reserve spot before refilling which is cheaper if places charge a fixed rate because they are lazy to calculate. Given these challenges, If you are severely limited with space, I would say the 5lb is a decent option but you have to take all the factors into consideration. Using a bulk tank is always a better idea than the little green ones, and refilling the green ones, even if you buy the DOT certified refillable type are going to be more work than just taking a bulk tank, so there's that too.

What are your thoughts on Toyota taking out the transmission cooler starting in 2019? Is it worth installing even though I will never be towing anything in my 2019. My buddy just had one installed on his 2020 but he tows trailers all day. heard such mixed reviews on the topic so I just wanted to ask what y’all thought?

This is one of my biggest gripes (along with people letting their dog roam off leash to wander into my site 100 yards away triggering my 2 pitties) and idk how to stop it other then a permit system to have some level of tracking & accountability. I almost always spend 20-30 min cleaning trash when first arriving to a campsite; usually broken glass, tp, beer cans, and dog shit. I’ve seen a few absolute dirt bags just throw trash (cup, can, wet wipe) out the window as they’re driving down Forrest roads. Some people simply don’t deserve to enjoy these spaces.

I am looking into overlanding as a hobby and for vacation time. I enjoy spending time on the road and driving to new locations and exploring the land. My current car is a Veloster N. I wanted a speedy nice fun car and over the past 3 years, I have enjoyed this car a lot, but have found that my life and style of what I want to do is changing. I have a 6 year old kid, just bought a puppy, and have a cat. I want to be able to have enough room for them all but realizing now that my current car does not offer that for the three of them. What would you recommend for a semi family like vehicle that would be good for my situation. I love music so must have good speakers, and ample room for a growing child and a German shepherd and a cat?

Been wild camping in the Sitgreaves National Forest (Arizona) the last 2 weeks. Moved to a different site multiple times since getting here. It's amazing how trashed this place is. I do what I can to clean up other peoples garbage and 💩💩💩, but after awhile I have to cut my loses and move on.

I have become a huge believer in the NItto tire. My rig is a fully loaded and decked out 2014 Ram Power Wagon that I use as my overlander. After around 40K miles on the stock Goodyears, I put a set of Ridge Grapplers (35x12.5x17) on the ol' girl and she has taken me on some epic adventures across the country, and with OVER 70K miles on that set I replaced them with an identical set last December. The guys at Discount Tire couldn't believe I was able to rack up that kind of mileage, could've probably gotten another 5K out of them, but I didn't want to chance it with winter coming. I can't say enough good things about the Ridge Grapplers, take care of your tires and they'll take care of you, Nitto fan for life!!!
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 9 дней назад
Yeah I’ve been really surprised by their stuff. I feel like people like to hate on them because they are a “show truck tire” but they really do work well. It doesn’t hurt that they look good too. That’s a ton of miles, not sure I’ve ever gotten that many miles out of any tire but I sold the 4Runner with the nittos at about 30k so if the new owners are still running them they probably have about 60k + on them.

7:52 How do you like the Hest down comforter? I haven't seen a lot of reviews about it on RU-vid. Do you think it can replace a sleeping bag?
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 10 дней назад
I have the double and I don’t use sleeping bags anymore. In the winter I do that and put a heated blanket underneath and summer I do just the comforter. It’s a personal preference thing but I for sure like how similar it is to sleeping at home like just a regular comforter. Not cheap but if you got the funds it’s worth it.

I’m digging the rack system with the 4 bangers. Is the uptop front shield universal for the 4 bangers or did uptop make specific front fairing for them? I also noticed you have 7 lights, I think they sell them in pairs so did you just have to bite the bullet to get the 7th?
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 10 дней назад
These are the big bangers, the 4 bangers actually would probably look more proportioned there if I was leaving the rack like this, but I’m going to be adding some more stuff up top here soon. That cut out is the standard cutout for the Zulu rack so you could add really any light in there and it would fit.
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 10 дней назад
The big bangers I think are sold as individual, the 4 bangers are sold in pairs. That being said, I reached out to them and asked if I could just buy 3 for my bumper coming up as I’m doing 5 (my fogs included) on the front bumper. I think the 4bangers would look better up on the rack tbh. The big bangers are just huge! If I was doing it again I’d space them out more and do 5.

So I know this is for over landing. And it’s about capable rigs. Buttttt if $15k is expensive, I think you should consider a dual sport or a 2 stroke dirt bike. You can’t carry as much. But you can visit some pretty cool places and get some amazing camping if you know how to pack light.
