Very well presented I just got my first worm cafe' set it up the way I tough it should be set up I only purchased 250 worms to start not knowing I should have started with 1,000. I have an friend that has an organic farm and also has a large commercial business of formulating organic fertilizers so I will go and dig in their manure pile and bump my worm cafe; to 1,000 worms. Thank you for your video I believe it is your website link above so I will check it out.. I live in Canada

Awesome info thank you . I intuitively did wait with the castings after my first harvest !! and yes found 5o more worms of various sizes and many babies. !! I loive the info about leaving castings on . I have seen some farmers completely ' denuding' the worms of all castings and it felt awful. The baby comparison is so lovely . Blessings from Oz .

Makes great sense to shower them ... in nature they would be regularly rained on to cleanse.

Way too much moisture. I am getting mites and fruit flies now due to this, or so I have been told. Or, am I not putting in enough moisture? Does drowning it with a lot of water help get rid of the mites and flies?

Now have had my worm cafe going for few months. Do not use the packaging to line your initial tray. Maybe they changed the manufacturing, but the worms did not break it down at all. Just use something like non colored newspaper. My initial harvest, because of the packaging, was a bit anaerobic. Needs more air. This was due to the packaging used as liner. I also would recommend leaving the drain open to induce more air flow. Otherwise, this is a good design and advice!

And an update. Noticed too many worms dropping into the sump now and not able to migrate up. Also noticed the worm population going down. Not ready yet to give up on this system but will try filling the sump with a mix of straw and coconut coir so is still aerated and the worms have a chance to move up. Also will punch in some air holes on the sides of the sump. This area will need checking regularly and probably recycle with new material.

So great that you are using that waste produce! I just can’t fathom that quantity of wasted food from one Costco- when there are so many needy families going hungry- and all in plastic! Crazy

Im still not sure if shredded office/printer paper is ok for the worms? There seems to be some concern that bleached paper is not good for them?

Have a simple question. How do you determine a tray is full? Is it to the top? Or is it when you put the next tray on it just touches the top of the compost in the tray below?

Good morning Bernie, Queen of Vermiculture! 👩‍🌾🪱👍 I love watching how you take care of your babies. I take care of mine with the same care. I feed daily because we eat daily. Each morning as I chop Strawberries and a banana for our breakfast, I chop up peel and tops for them. When we finish with our coffee I take the grounds and cool them in the freezer for 15 minutes and then crumble them on top. I grind Eggshells in my coffee grinder so it's superfine. They are living creatures and deserve to be taken care of. You taught me this in July of 2009 and I remembered everything you said during our brief visit. I'm glad you started a channel so I can watch exactly how you do it. 👩‍🌾🪱👍
