Join me to talk about all things books and homeschooling.
Welcome to the Celebrate a Book Channel!
Grab a cup of tea and pull up a chair. I love to talk about books, especially the ones you love to read with your kids. And while we chat, I am happy to share tips and ideas for your homeschool -- afterall, I've been homeschooling for 17 years.

I was given this book for our homeschool. I read reviews online and am hesitant to let my 10 or 12 year old read this because several reviews mentioned there's multiple passages about people not taking care of our planet and not being responsible with our resources like the author is trying to push his agenda and opinions onto the readers. Was that your experience with this book? I'm trying to limit my stack of books I need to pre-read so I'd appreciate your insight.
This book definitely talks about endangered species and taking care of the planet. I am not sure what agenda would bother you in it, but ecology and protecting the environment is a major theme. Invasive species and invasive plants are discussed as well.
Do you happen to have any recommendations for a wide range of kids? Our homeschool group try’s to do book club with all ages. Our last choice was “Around the world in 80 days”.
You win the most persistent :) AND the person who finally forced me to figure out the problem with my email - which had to do with my website host. UGH. Thank you so much!
It’s so funny how different tastes are! You are the reason my son absolutely fell in love with Nathan Hale books. We read Underground Abductor a couple of years ago from your list for that school year and he was hooked. We owned them all within 2 weeks and he still pulls them out all the time 💕
Yes. I always include him because I think he is fantastic (my sons LOVE his books) but I always have kids who groan ;) I am so glad your son loved them - I think they teach so much great history!
Love this list and the warnings. We loooove the Martian. We did the young reader edition as well, but I still wouldn't let my 10yo daughter mention it as a favorite she read this year in your book club class😂😂 I know it was a bit old for her, but she probably loved it the most of anyone. She is now on a huge space kick, so it really made an impact.
@@maryhannawilson I didn't want other 8to10 yo to maybe pick up the original/adult version and start reading it because "someone in their class said it was a favorite!" Lol.
Having grown up in a "we only read the classics" family, I'm pretty sure that most of the time it actually just means "we don't want our children being exposed to ideas from this century". I hope those parents realize that their plan will work for exactly as long as it takes their kids to get around parental controls on the internet.
Honestly I grew to be a better reader with a better vocabulary once I was allowed to pick what I wanted to read! The classics will always have a place in my heart, but reading from lots of different genres and perspectives really widened my world! Great job! Half of the job of teaching kids to learn is instilling a love of reading!❤
Aster and the Accidental Magic, Keeper of Lost Cities, Squished, The Way of the Hive, Saving Sunshine. There you go. please be more polite next time :)
At this point, anything we can do to get kids to read more should be encouraged. Nearly 2/3rds of school aged children are not reading at their grade level!😢
Thank you for sharing favorites (and least favorites!). So fun to see how the votes were spread. My daughter only got to join for 2 mo, but did pick up a few titles from both groups to read on her own. She ended up loving Grounded! She has discovered she really enjoys books that tell the story from alternating perspectives, so this one was really interesting to her! I am definitely going to add some of the other titles for her (ever growing!) summer reading stack.
I am a big fan of the alternating perspectives as well! I think it is such an interesting way to tell a story. Another really great one to add would be "Restart" by Gordon Kormon - we did that one the previous year and it was a great rotating narrator story.
I was so glad to see A Rovers Story in the top for middle school!! It was one of our favorite suggestions from you this year. I couldn’t believe it didn’t make the cut for the younger ones, but then I recapped the list and totally get it! When they’re all great picks how do you choose? We love and appreciate so much your book picks each year!
I know. I’m glad no one asked me to choose my favorite 🤣 but Manatee Summer would be up there. And a Rovers Story. And Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus. So yeah, choosing is tough.
Girl, I read the instructions and watched multiple videos and was sitting here like, “…how dumb am I that I still can’t figure out this card game?” Your video made SO much sense, it was so easy to follow. So thank you so much for a super clear explanation! Looking forward to playing the game!!
I absolutely LOVE this series of videos about book discussions! These ideas are so helpful. This sounds like a really fun book. I have it on our shelf, we are going to try to do it this spring!
I'm so glad someone directed me to this video. I love how you presented the ideas around the book that could be discussed among young readers! Thank you.
I am honored you found the video and took the time to watch it. We loved your book and had a fantastic time discussing the characters. My students told me to be sure to read the sequel!
Our kids love so many of the books you shared about. Thanks for sharing. I have added a few we haven’t tried yet. Just subscribed. I also have a channel and would love to be friends and connect. Looking forward to watching more of your content.
Thank you for all of your warnings. I love that you don't skip the book but explain what's inside so there are no surprises if we don't want our kids to be bombarded before they are ready. Really appreciate the book recs as it's really hard to find things worthwhile anymore.
