Hi everyone, my name is Matt. I'm a miniature painter, proud recipient of some Golden Demons, and an oil painter. In this channel I'll be sharing my professional and fine art experience in the form of tips, tricks, and tutorials about miniature painting and the hobby.
Love your videos and subscribed. I have a question though, what sprays would you substitute for they grey you used as i am having a hard time finding it in the UK. I am unsure if mechanicum standard would look correct. Any help would be wonderful. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Mechanicus Standard Grey spray would be a fine substitute. It's a little darker than what I use (the grey I use is a near exact color match to Dawnstone). With a darker base you'll get slightly darker shadows on the model, which you may or may not like. Personally I think it would work out just fine, I would just go a little heavier on the light zenithal over the top of it.
@@MattsHobbyHour Wow thank you for the speedy reply! Army painter Uniform grey is an almost exact colour match but had unfortunate experiences with army painter spray.
thank you, please keep making more of these contrast hacks videos. this is the perfect blend of styles for me, painting is more fun now. much appreciated!
Congratulations to your content! There are dozens "tutorials" on youtube about painting minis, but you are the first channel I see that actually gives step by step instructions as well as providing the color you used and how they interact with each other. Most creators lose time trying to make clickbait thumbnails and titles but you give some useful information instead. Keep up the great content.
amazing work. love it. I'm hoping to take insiraption from this once I finally start painting minis. It's always excited me but I'm too scared to start still since it's pretty expensive to buy everything needed to start off haha
Thanks for watching! I'm glad its encouraging you to start the hobby. Yeah it can be kind of expensive. I think you could get started for under $100. I'd pick out a dozen paints and a couple good brushes, those will last you a while as long as you take care of them. Then look in to getting some second hand models to practice on (a lot of people may give you some old stuff for free). Once you have painted a few models and know some basics, then I'd start looking at the new plastic kits. Good luck and I hope you enjoy painting!
Wait a sec, do those trolls have gills under their armpits? I never noticed that before. I like the color scheme and especially the green skin. You did a lot of detail work on this one Mr. Matt, although it's a little too much for me when it comes to army painting. I would have definitely broken out the drybrush on those scales. You are definitely a more patient man than I. Thanks for the video, great quality as always.
I'm not sure if they are gills, but that would be fitting for river trolls! Yeah I would probably drybrush them too if I had more than a couple to paint, its definitely time consuming!
Your guess is as good as mine! A lot of the paints have odd names. Maybe it's intended as the final highlight color over a black basecoat, since it's a "Layer" paint?
Yeah you're right. I need to invest in some better lighting (right now I am only using a couple desk lamps). On small stuff it's not too bad but the bigger models end up looking too dark. Hopefully will get all that fixed soon. Thanks for watching!
There isn't a specific way I set up when I'm trying to paint stuff fast. I just want to make sure I have everything I need at arms reach, and some good music or a podcast. What do you mean by the differences between Citadel paints? A review of the whole range, or something more specific (like Contrast)? What kind of stuff would you find valuable in that kind of video? In the meantime I'd encourage you to join the channel Discord (there's a link in the About section on my channel page) and if you have any specific questions it's much easier to talk about them over there. Thanks for watching and good luck with your painting!
@@MattsHobbyHour I’m super new to mini painting like I haven’t touched one with a brush yet and I’m building my army. But when I watch your videos I see you use the “speed paints” do they come super runny? I’ll join the discord and ask some more questions when I’m free
@@jackcat8994 A lot of the paints I use are Citadel Contrast paints (Speed Paint is a similar paint available from Army Painter but I don't use that brand). Contrast is runny and similar to watercolor or ink; it is transparent and you have to paint it over a white or near-white undercoat in order for the color to show up. For very beginner-friendly information I would recommend the Games Workshop channel on RU-vid, they have a lot of videos for those just getting started. I'll try to include some more beginner friendly content on my channel in the future. Welcome to the hobby!
@@MattsHobbyHour thank you and honestly I think I’m going to stick to your videos as I like how you do them and format them I’ve watched the one on your saurus’s like 6 times to get as much info as I can. Is it best to get citadel paints online in a set or something?
Hi Matt amazing vid , going to try and replicate it tomorrow on a harpy just wish I could get the paint consistency right for the lines thanks again 👍🏻
Thanks and good luck! Feel free to join the channel Discord and share your results / ask any questions (server link is in the About section on my main channel page)
Great video, thank you! For those, like me, struggling with the viscosity of the skin mix of Apothecary White and Russ Grey, I advise you to try a 2:2:1 mix of Gryph-Charger Grey, Contrast Medium and Water, it's really smooth to apply and has a really similar tone :)
Amazing tutorial, trying it myself now. When do you recommend painting? IE after or before putting on the metal and the magnetic sheet? Also, advice on painting? I tried to paint it with some paints and found the wood looked a bit strange with my attempts. Just hoping for some general advice! Thanks a lot!
Personally I like to spray the tray after gluing on the metal sheet, and I attach the magnetic sheet on the bottom at the very end (after painting). I use Rustoleum 2X Espresso, satin finish. because it's a very close color match to Rhinox Hide. I like having the metal painted the same color as the edges of my bases, and I think it looks better than bare metal when I remove a model from the tray. I do recommend to put on the sand prior to painting, though. I use wood glue, then clean up the sides after sprinkling the sand. So my order of operations is: build the tray, glue on the metal sheet, glue the sand on the edge, spray the whole thing brown, drybrush the sand/apply grass, touch up the edge of the tray with Rhinox Hide as needed, and then I'll put on the magnetic sheet to the bottom. Hope this helps and good luck!
