I hope you're reading this Art even though you probably will never see this but it would be beyond awesome if you could upload this digitized tape onto the internet archive or any such site that could hold the original file because this incredible performance is unfortunately neutered by youtube's compression.
When James Brown isn't happy, he sure looks mean, but when he is, it comes across as childlike excitement, very genuine. He definitely loved the audience and the show band here.
you could tell when the beat came back in, and my man was about to lay that nasty lead on the start during there was a time, and the band was on the edge of over taking the boss, then JB stopped the song on the spot. Not letting that happen lol
Letterman truly had a second to none set of musicians, look at Hiram Bullock immediately noting "damn, did we miss a stop?" and immediately watching the signs from the horn players who direct them to stop. What a wonderful segment!
If there is ONE person in the world of music I Absolutely Can NOT STAND - it's that egotistical gimp unashamedly playing his organ right on stage. MF isn't qualified to polish James' boots. He is to music as "kosher" is to Haute Cuisine. GTFO.

From what I read, James Brown and Paul Simon were the only two guests in the 11 years of Late Night with Letterman who led Letterman to decide to bump the other guests scheduled on those nights.
Im pretty sure that entirely WHITE crowd turned BLACK for at least a couple minutes after James Brown invigorated the crowd with his SOUL In fact I bet in their mind they are still black and have a piece of the BEST man to give us the greatest soul music of all time!
