Great review, can it be ran on just a normal DCC controller and not the HM7000? Thanks
@modeloco
@modeloco День назад
@@richardgray6606 Hello and gratitude back for getting in touch. Yes, it can be if you have a Hornby Legacy Dongle plugged into an xpressnet DCC controller (not Loconet though). It needs to be an xpressnet one like the Hornby Elite or Select. I’ve done two videos on this if you’re still unsure 🙏 This way you can run using app and controller simultaneously. The other way is to register the Bluetooth decoder fitted locomotive and set it all up on and through the app then put it over into DCC control mode, within the app and run it using any standard DCC controller with the same chosen address allocated, beforehand, in the HMDCC app 👍 PS Just make sure that the gadget, power supply or DCC controller you use isn’t one that Hornby may state isn’t recommended. So just check their compatibility notes on their website too.

Very useful summary video. I live in a flat not large enough to host a 00 gauge layout that would satisfy my ambitions (yes, you can do very compact shunting type stuff, but that's not what I am after). The basic format and concept of what you have built is something that could fit very neatly into the space I have available. As I have never seen TT stuff in person, though, I have been reluctant to actually start spending money before I am certain I can make it work. The number one question I have struggled to resolve is the one you answer at 21:30 in this video: how big is a turning loop.

Found initially some struggled (The 50' brake is worse) by sticking on corner but once run / worn in they soon loosened up and easily run on radius 2 loop. Big issue you have missed is A3, A3 with only 2 beats of cylinder to the wheel revolution. This kills my wonderful TT120 locs in my view. As for new locomotives, an Austerity 2-8-0 would go nicely with the BR ER locomotives issued or planned. Yes certainly fitted ‘stay alive’ and sound options across the board, if N can have sound decoders in smallish diesels TT120 should be a no brainier with both. HI there, I came across your interesting video. Thanks for mentioning Revolution's MMA/JNA box wagons. Re the price: it is the same as our N gauge equivalents. Although we will spend some extra on tooling to allow us to depict accurate detail variations such as 9-rib and 11-rib bodies with our without side doors and variations in brake equipment, the over-riding factor in setting price is the number of models you expect to make. For TT:120 we lack hard data so we have done our best to keep the price realistic. They are designed for customers who've ordered 66s to have something properly modern, as the 4-wheel HAA coal hoppers and TTA tankers are now largely out of use. Speaking of which, you'd need at least 24 coal wagons for a realistic train - whereas our train formations diagram (glad you like it) show that 6-12 box wagons make for a perfectly prototypical modern train. So while individual wagons may cost more, the total train can be less!

I am loving TT, having fun, making the odd mistake and learning from it. It’s got me into the hobby after a huge gap and I don’t think 00 or N would have managed that. My TT:120 wish list as follows: 1. Sound fitted, power bank fitted Class 08. I know there are some really clever DIY options out there, but I don’t think I’m capable of undertaking the modifications - I want to buy it off the shelf. And buying all the bits to do a DIY job isn’t cheap. Yes, I understand the production difficulties, and I’m happy to be patient. Well, a bit patient 😁. 2. Yes, a DMU. Both the above I think are an opportunity. TT is all about making the most of small spaces, and I love it. I love seeing my 50 pulling a long rake of carriages, ditto my Duchess. But they look clumsy as soon as you put them on a smallish layout. Both a sound fitted 08 and a DMU would look great on a small layout and bring it alive. 3. And finally, mainly for selfish reasons, a class 31. I think Hornby are planning one, so yes please. Why? Because my first train set when I was a kid was a Triang Freight master with a class 31, and I want to re-kindle the joy that set gave me. Thanks for the video!

I had the LNER P2 with smoke generator which worked only briefly. Only a very little wisp of steam and the sounds eventually stopped working all together - even though all sound profiles were installed correctly as shown on my HM7000 App. These steam generator fitted locos also short out my ECoS controller and my local DCC experts say this is because there are two decoders in these locos (one in the tender for the sound and one in the boiler to synchronise the steam "chuffs". Hornby claimed that these locos have been tested with all DCC controllers - but I don't think this is true as they are not compatible with the ECoS system. Hornby technical staff were at a loss as to why my P2 loco sounds stopped, and my supplying dealer couldn't fix this issue using the Hornby HM7000 app, Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 or NCE Powercab controllers. Decoder resets and re-installation of the sound files didn't work. Luckily I managed to get a refund as an exchange wasn't possible.
@modeloco
@modeloco 13 дней назад
Hello Maurice, Thanks for the detailed information here. 1) Were you using the Hornby HM|DCC app on your layout, to run the P2, as this wasn’t clear? 2) As all the sounds come pre-installed, first thing I’m wondering here, is if you altered them, deleted them off the decoder for some reason or, attempted to and then tried to put them back on the sound decoder, before the issues occurred? 3) Can understand you trying to do that later but, not sure why an ECoS system would affect this, unless it’s the wrong voltage as this would only serve to provide power to the track, not control the P2, unless running in DCC mode which of course should be fine, following Hornby’s latest guidelines regarding controllers. Who are the experts you mention and you haven’t mentioned what happened when they tested your controller in the shop or, against another P2. This would then clearly let us see if it’s the Loco, the ECoS or all the new Steam P2 models? 4) Did you attempt to run this P2 in DC or Analogue mode as this isn’t possible. Have to ask, just in case? 5) Next, going to the ‘TXS Decoders fitted’ being plural on the Hornby website (and though we know these can be typos) then as you confirm, and though not overly stated but, what I thought too, there must be two decoders in these locomotives and obviously these need to work in unison. This information, on the Hornby Website, being lacking can lead to us thinking we could say try another set of sound files out, as another subscriber has done and that this might not be a good idea if one decoder relies on the other for chuffing sync, etc. Most would argue, why would anyone do that but, that’s going to happen if people assume it’s the same set up as usual. 6) The Steam locomotives are new and it indeed could be a mismatch but, an opportunity missed here I feel with your dealer as it’s left a little ambiguous, due to the story ending before it was resolved unfortunately, as to what’s causing the issue so, any more information would be good for us all if you can look at the above and give that information? Regards, Andy.
@mauricekerrigan6759
@mauricekerrigan6759 12 дней назад
@@modeloco Hi Andy. To answer your points, I can say: 1. My primary method of control is my ECoS system. When following the ECoS instructions to read/write and re-address decoders - this controller immediately shorts out when trying to read the decoder (on a programming track). Luckily I have a Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 system - so I used this Gaugemaster (also on a separate programming track) to change the locomotive address. The ECoS could then be used to successfully control the locomotive. I then used the Hornby HM7000 app on my smartphone and was able to switch between the ECoS and the HM7000 app and control the P2 with whichever one I fancied using. All 3 systems (the ECoS, Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 and the HM7000 app) controlled the locomotive fine. This lasted for about a month. All my other locomotives and their functions work perfectly. I have Accurascale, Bachmann, Dapol and Hornby DCC fitted locomotives. I recently fitted a Hornby Class 50 with an 8-pin TXS sound decoder and stay alive, and this works fine using the Hornby HM7000 app and my ECoS controller. 2. I didn't delete or change any of the sound profiles, or change any CV's. As you say - the sound profiles come pre-installed and these were left as factory fitted. The only CV I changed initially, was to give it a new address from 03 (factory installed) to its running number. The parameters on the Hornby HM7000 app showed all "green ticks" and the latest firmware etc. was installed. 3. The voltage on the ECoS is within normal limits. I can't off the top of my head remember what the exact figure is, but this was checked on the ECoS system, and found to be correct. (just below the maximum voltage recommended for 00 Gauge). I didn't alter this voltage. The local experts I refer to are a local supplier I use called DCC Supplies - who are DCC experts and are also Dapol authorised repairers. 4. I only use DCC (not analogue). All my locomotives are DCC fitted. 5. It was this company (DCC Supplies) who informed me of there being two decoders fitted in these locomotives. They stated that this was the reason that the ECoS "shorts out" as the ECoS system is trying to read two decoders at the same time. 6. I contacted Hornby Technical Department about the lack of steam the loco produced, and they were at a loss as to why this was. (my P2 would only emit barely a thin wisp of steam from the chimney) - they only suggested I run the locomotive after filling with water until empty and then re-fill with water again, and to check I had fitted the correct chimney. The P2 is supplied with two different chimney types - and they asked if I had push-fitted the correct one as per the loco instructions (which I obviously had). After about a month, all sounds stopped. Shortly after that, it stopped moving all together, and the loco wouldn't move either forwards or backwards. I contacted Hornby Technical services again who advised I do a decoder reset - so this was done by resetting CV8 to 8 (If I remember correctly). I did this via the HM7000 app and also by using my Gaugemaster Prodigy 2. This didn't cure the issue. The loco still wouldn't move or make any sound. I purchased the P2 from TMC and as they had sold all their allocation from Hornby (Hornby only allocated them 10), they didn't have another one to swap for my faulty one. Hornby were also showing out of stock and as the locomotive had stopped functioning completely (no sound or movement), they advised me to return it to the supplying shop for a refund. I visited TMC in person who kept and tested the locomotive overnight. They tried to get it to work using firstly their NCE Powercab controller, and then their Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 system - but they told me it was unresponsive to both of their systems. The loco wouldn't move or make any sounds. They advised me that they could send it away to DCC experts they use - but there would be a charge for this. I decided I wouldn't pay any more as I thought it too troublesome - so they gave me a credit note, which I promptly used on something from their showroom. I've seen a few videos on RU-vid regarding the lack of smoke on some P2 models, and I've read a couple of customer reviews on the Hornby website - where a couple of people have had to return their P2's to Hornby after they too stopped running. I hope that this is clear - but if I can offer any more info, please let me know. All the best, Maurice

@@mauricekerrigan6759 Hi Maurice, That information is both thorough and insightful . Thank you so much. I’m baffled as to why TMC didn’t advise that they’d send it straight back to Hornby for repair. I’ve used Hornby and anyone can use them directly. You obviously call them, they pass on a return number, you pay the post up front and it’s refunded in full, if you send them the post tracked receipt via email, once the locomotive has been repaired, returned and inspected by you. This service is completely free of charge from Hornby and I’ve found Hornby extremely easy to work with in the past. Can’t understand why a warranty repair, like this, would incur a charge either? From the sounds of things here, you ran the P2 a lot on your layout is that correct as I’ve not run any of my locomotives extensively. I ask this just to get some idea of use, how many fill ups were successful before it packed up? Thanks again, Andy.
@mauricekerrigan6759
@mauricekerrigan6759 12 дней назад
@@modeloco Hi Andy, I think a repair was out of the question. I even asked Hornby if I could purchase a replacement steam generator, but Hornby said that these weren't available as spares so if I returned the loco to Hornby for repair and it was found it needed a new steam generator, they wouldn't be able to swap it over. I bought my P2 just as they were released and I think technical knowledge of the workings of these locomotives was "limited" to say the least. The technical people I spoke with at Hornby weren't able to help much as they didn't know why only a little steam was being made, and they didn't know what else to suggest after the decoder re-set was unsuccessful, and all parameters on the Hornby HM7000 app were showing installed and up to date. I think this was also the case at TMC. They didn't have any more P2's in stock and they told me that Hornby were out of stock of them too (so Hornby wouldn't be able to replace it). Even if Hornby had some in stock - TMC told me Hornby wouldn't allow them to have any more. They (TMC) had sold their allocation of 10, and wouldn't be allowed any more. I guess as spares weren't available from Hornby and TMC were going to try and get it working for me using their technicians and maybe try a different sound decoder/PCB (if that was faulty) - this was where the charge came in. As mentioned - I'd lost faith in the locomotive and I just wanted my money back as I think the loco packing up completely after only a month or so made it "not fit for purpose" and why should something need major repairs/modification after only a month or so. Credit to TMC - they gave me a credit note for the full amount I paid for the P2 and they handled returning the faulty loco to Hornby. That's excellent customer service from TMC and long may I continue to use them. They do some outstanding deals, and when I visited their shop/warehouse in Beck Hole (North Yorkshire) and stayed in the holiday accommodation there, I was given a full guided tour, introduced to several staff and made to feel very welcome. My layout isn't really extensive at all. It's only about 10ft square and I only managed to run the P2 for about 10 or so fill ups before it packed up. I think one reviewer on the Hornby website managed about 20 minutes of running before theirs stopped working. It looks like you fill the Flying Scotsman through the chimney, which seems much better than having to remove the front smokebox door on the P2 (which was fiddly) and struggle to add water with the pipette horizontally! Such a shame, but the experience has put me off getting the Black 5 (with steam). I have heard today that Dapol are going to release another "Black Label" steam locomotive which will be die-cast, feature working front and rear lamp lights, steam and sound (like they did a few years ago with their A4). I'm not sure when this will be on the market, but I think I'll wait for this to hit the shops as their old Black Label A4 was stunning! (even though it had a £400 price tag!). All the best, Maurice

@mauricekerrigan6759 Thanks Maurice, Yes, if trust/faith goes, it goes. Do see TMC getting involved with many people on here and have per-orders with them but, as they didn’t respond to my last email so, like you, those feelings may change. Flying Scotsman fills from the top through a very small removable bung but, I got used to it and it’s all on a review I’ve done. Do really like Dapol signals but, will stick with Hornby for the Black 5 and despite some rather negative reports about their non steam re-tool, some smaller channels love it. It’s been good to chat Maurice. Stay in touch, Andy.

I very much welcome the magnetic couplers supplied with the new Mk2s in TT:120. I usually use ones from TJmodeles here in France. I have to say, I am a bit worried about the lifespan of the Hornby couplers - they seem a bit weak and I find you have to be careful not to accelerate a long train too quickly or you leave some of the coaches behind. I too would welcome a six pin HM7000 sound decoder for my 08s. All of my other TT models are HM7000 sound decoder fitted. I realise there's more space needed on a Bluetooth decoder but I'm sure it could be done with a bit of ingenuity. Nice round up!

@@Michaelgoestofrance Hi Michael, Thank you 🙏 interesting about the Hornby magnetic couplings and I’m only going on the OO offerings, I have at present, which are really good. They sometimes feel a little too powerful on both makes I’ve tried, if anything. My thinking is if they’re too strong it would pull the coupling right out. Has this happened at all with the ones you’ve tried? Yes, need that 6-pin sound decoder option. I feel the TT community want sound more than the OO but, the top end sound locos always seem to sell best. One more thing is that any ideas we think, even if they may seem a bit silly or whatever should be said as it’s often the things we say in passing that trigger another’s imagination and vice versa. Sometimes even the perceived negative comments or criticisms can spur you on more. Still feel sad that Simon Kohler, was kind of mysteriously, retired so soon after all the dedication he put into this scale and him reaching out so directly, to ourselves, the consumers was another fearless achievement he brought to the UK modeller. There aren’t many who give that, unfortunately, unless it’s sales related or they’re constantly buttered up a bit in my experience. In engineering they called it ‘…. licking’ and not many managers wanted those seemingly below their status, to find they were lacking in some way so, the yes men, rather than skill, innovation, etc got promoted instead to keep they’re position safe and that went up the ranks. I saw it as a young naïve apprentice, it looked as if it was encouraged. Ego and envy going hand in hand, yet the good only really want to help, it’s not about being right, it’s about doing the right thing and it’s stuck with me ever since👍 I’ve added this to my description. The Hornby bashing of products in OO, ones that I had and cherished and being told they were virtually rubbish as TT:120 hit the shelves, whilst in the next breath being told to go look at Accurascale, actually put me off even looking because I felt if such voices can be so biased one way, then of course, that can work both ways, maybe due to something lacking and this then having a reverse outcome with how I saw the positives pushed👍 Regards, Andy

Also, you have the option of sound files from DCKits, Roads & Rails, Yoochoos and other sound creators. With the HM7000 you are totally tied to the Hornby ones. Hello, The simple HM|DCC, from within the app, downloadable/re-programmable sound decoders which are being updated as we go along is also a great plus point here for HM7000. We can also hear and sample these and if we don’t like, possibly change. Not all sound files are as well recorded/compressed as others so, needing bigger speakers. You have to know this and not knowing, can be quite confusing to many as well and, be an expensive learning curve. I certainly used to think all ESU sound decoders had the same sound files on them, regardless of where you purchased 🤔. Do also like the simple volume sliders, etc in the HM|DCC app to set these and the CV read outs, easily seen and adjusted if needs be as well. This came in to full effect adjusting the smoke generator CV Setting within mins. Thanks for the thoughts and feelings. Good to hear👍

Looking at TT:120 some great ideas, a classic DMU is desperately needed, I’d be happy with any of the stalwarts for High Fell. Revolution Trains getting on board is super news, there are requests for them to consider making the 120 in TT but realistically if they said yes, it’s 2 years away. As a child every railway adventure started and ended with a rattling 101! The magnetic close couplings in TT:120 from Hornby are great, we need packs of those available. If the could make them reversible that would be superb. I wanted to run a glasgow/Edinburgh push pull train it took about 10 years of experience to achieve this I now double head or top and tail with a non powered loco at one end low tech sometimes wins! the crucial factors are no such thing as a model railway they are all just wee trains they respond to the same dynamics you must have proper back to backs and wheel profiles proper pickups and weight distribution on a loco and good compatible couplings for instance I had a Heljan garret running at its full speed with plus 60 mineral wagons weighted heavy to light to the back now after a few laps the thoughts moved to how the fuck do we stop this in on piece! thanks for listening
